Not worth the price of admission
I'm gonna make this quick and to the point. I should be a lot harsher but I just don't have the time. The course looked liked the last time it was manicured was last year. Sometimes you couldn't tell what was fairway and what was rough. The man mowing the course was using pretty much the equivalent to a lawn mower I would use in my backyard so this probably explains it. The course layout doesn't make much sense. There is nothing exciting or even remotely beautiful about this course. There is so many more negatives but again I just don't have the time. Simply put, use your $50 for anything else and it will be better than playing this course.

Greens are always slow
You can score well if you stay in the fairways. I don't think they cut the long grass this year yet
Great value for the money. Finished in two hours.
Shake the rust off.
Great course to get your first couple of rounds out of your system. Open fairways make for easier play, however can get crowded making for a slower round. All in all worth the price if you can catch the deals on golfnow.com!!!
the course was good.
the course was in good shape, the staff and service were excellent. The course has a lot of hills, not much water or sand hazards.
Bad condition
I've played this course a couple times in the past and it has gotten worse over the years. I did go on a day after it rained the previous few days, so it was soaked in some spots. But the weather had nothing to do with the shape of the course. I enjoy the layout and terrain, however the condition is below average. The tee boxes dont even resemble tee boxes. It's just normal grass cut short. Same goes with the fairways. I know rain prevents the course from cutting it, but it's not even normal fairway grass; it's what you would sod your lawn with. I lost a couple balls, as did my playing partners, on shots hit into the fairway or just off in the rough. It was almost like hitting in short rough no matter where you ended up. There were considerable amounts of leaves all over the place, making it more difficult to find your ball and in some cases, sticks were in the way of your ball. The scenery with all the trees is nice to look at, but when not maintained, not fun to play with. The greens were incredibly slow and long. You had to power up on putts making it challenging and different than what you would be accustomed to. Slow greens make reading it tough, though they aren't very tough with the breaks. Just hit through the breaks for the most part and you'll be fine. The price, $35, would fit right for a better course. This course needs some help. The staff was real friendly, particularly the starter, AJ. However, I never saw a ranger on the course (probably don't have one...). Pace of play was fairly decent; couple slow groups in front of us that let us play through.
Hickory Hills South Course Diamond in the Rough
I did not expect the course to be in the good shape now at the end of the season. Greens were rolling surprisingly smooth for a well played public course. Fairways also in good shape. Rough a little long but to be expected at this time of the year.
Recommendations: Continue to cutback on the older trees.
Nice terrain and layout - some issues though
Terrific rate from GolfNow brought us here. Not a good start - had to wait nearly 30 minutes for a cart - it's end of season and course had 10 carts out of service for repair. Also, very awkward arrival logistics - no real bag drop and long walk thru dark tunnel to get to carts. Front end of of the "clubhouse" is dominated by banquet and restaurant facilities.
As for the course (south course), impressive opening tee high above the par 5 fairway. This course has great terrain and lots of up and down, doglegs, blind shots, etc. which make for a very interesting and challenging layout. Old course with every hole lines by stately old trees. That part is great. However, the fairways are basically Kentucky bluegrass with clover throughout, not bent grass, Bermuda grass or any other type of standard golf turf. Therefore, you never really feel comfortable hitting off the fairway "grass" even though it was very green.
The greens were exceptionally soft and spongy - and extremely slow and difficult to read because they did not give you the break the slope would ordinarily give you. Softest greens I have played on in many years. That said, they were in great shape with no bare spots or other distress - just very soft and hard to read.
Pace was very good the front nine, then slowed considerably on the back. No evidence of rangers or other on-course assistance to keep things moving. "Half-way" house it actually located where the greens for three holes (4, 8, 15) and tee-boxes for three other holes (5, 9, 16) come together. A very busy intersection, which on a crowded day is also very distracting for those on the tee-boxes and trying to execute putts since any conversations on any of these, or around the half-way house can be easily heard. Probably a neat arrangement for outings but no so much for those just wanting to golf.
At any rate, I would play again - but probably not on a weekend, and only for a bargain rate. Will be a very attractive course when the fall colors are out at this is a venerable old-time course with trees galore.
No rush to go back
Tee boxes and "fairways" covered in weeds. The 3 bunkers on the course look like sandboxes - not raked or maintained. No bent-grass, so even shots in the fairway are like hitting out of rough. Greens are SLOW. They're cut so long you need to hit 30-40% harder than you think just to get it to the hole. Cart paths are so close to the greens, if you miss a 180 yard shot by just 15 feet, it could hit a path, bounce God knows where and be lost (speaking from experience).
If you like country club style courses, this ain't it. If you want to get out of work, have a cheap afternoon in the suburbs, and play a few challenging holes, this place works fine.
Must play once course
I give 4**** rating for this course............................
