Good track
Unfortunately all the rain has left the course a little battered. There are holes that are practically unplayable. I played on a hot deal but until the course dries out the rack rate might be a little much. Played very early so not a lot of staff at that time but the gentleman in the pro shop was pleasant. No beverage cart wasn’t surprise at that time of day either.
Unfortunately will be swamy til end of June/early July
Big Run is like going back in time. Old school clubhouse and locker room. Great bar post round. Course over the years has had several updates - I've been honored to play this track since 1979 at least once each season. See my reviews below all posted in late May of previous years for helpful hits/tips as we play here every year the Thursday before Memorial Day. With all the excessive rains a number of holes are going to take a while to dry out and be maintained properly #2 #3 and #18 in particular. Sand traps have always been an issue here but generally the rest of the course is kept in above average condition. Lots of hills and dales and that 11th hole just a beast. Friendly folks and overall a course I highly recommend because of the elevation changes....it's different from any course you'll play in the Southwestern burbs. Mother nature just hasn't cooperated so far this season - if you can't overlook that don't leave a review. 3 stars right now will be a solid 4 once we get some dry conditions.....that's just the way it from season to season at Big Run - deal with it!!
Awful condition
I used to enjoy playing here because it is a great layout. Unfortunately, they have let it go and it is in horrible condition. Fairways were an absolute joke... Looked like rough. Bunkers were rock hard... They basically aren't even bunkers. They have no business charging $70 for this course in the current shape it is in. It is a shame what they have let that course become.
You can do better
This is the North Shore. If you want to pay 70 dollars for a good round you can. But not at Big run. I personally could not tell where the fairway was on the 2nd hole because it blended in with the rough. This is a 30 dollar course.
So you know Lockport isn't the North Shore correct? In fact it's very southwest of the city. Also I played out there not too long ago and the conditions were excellent considering the rain we've been getting. Absolutely has one of the best layouts in the entire state. Don't listen to this clown.
One of top courses in Illinois
Played Big Run again today. Stopped about 6 times just to take in the beauty of the course. Spectacular layout, great greens. Few spots on course could use some TLC but this course is one of top courses in Illinois.
thank you for your kind words
have a great golf season
Beautiful Terrain
A really tough course that is not for the faint hearted players. Only big boys can play here. This course will beat you up in so many ways. But the hilly terrain and the 2 most beautiful par 3’s in the area are worth the pain.
Long walks
Many areas roped off from carts, causing long walks to get to ball. This might be unavoidable due to very hilly terrain. Bu if your legs can handle it, it’s a nice challenging course.
Good course - needs new owner
The land is great, the layout of the course is wonderful, but this place needs an owner who cares even a little bit. Maintenance of the course is the bare minimum. Clubhouse is a joke. It was a busy Sunday morning, no ranger or bar cart to be found. Ball washers were falling apart. Cart paths have always been in rotten shape. I could identify about $5 million worth of upgrades that would help this place out, but even a small fraction of that invested would go a long way. Just something to tell the customers that you are interested in running a quality golf course - because it's obvious right now that no one there does.
great course
This course will beat you up if you don't have your A game. You really should play this golf course a few times to get the feel for where you need to hit the ball. tough on your 1st or 2nd round here I can't wait to play it again.
Big Run a true classic
Big Run is a true test of skill for go;fers of all abiliities. The 605 yd part five 9th is just part of the fun. The uphill finish on the 18th is one to remember.
Have a hot dog or brat at the turn with your favorite beverage and you will and your friends will have a round to remember.
Big Run
Challenging golf course. You’ll get your monies worth.
It is what it is
I agree with the reviewers who commented on the patchy fairways and long rounds. We play every week and this is the only course all year where we agreed to roll the balls in the fairways.
The reasons for the long rounds is the course difficulty. Plus the fact that this place doesn't just draw low handicappers. It is so tough due to combination of dense trees, rolling terrain, and undulating (two-tier) greens. Pace of play could be improved slightly by:
* I know it's expensive to remove trees, but how 'bout start with the dead trees?
* several of the greens were borderline (usga-like) unfair due to positioning of the pins. It alright to have one green per round like that, but 3-4-5 of them is totally unacceptable.
I know that none of this will happen, so I agree with the posters who advised to play this place only once per year (if even that)and know what you are getting into.
I hate this course....
I have played this course several time over the years...heck years ago, I use to walk it....not now. In all these years, I don't know why I play it. I have never played well there, despite being a decent golfer. Don't get me wrong, the course is great, you use every club in your bag. But it eats my lunch...yet every now and then, I think, I can tame this thing. Take a few extra balls, and if you are still in your 20's or early 30's and are in decent shape, you can walk it. But enjoy the last hole if you do.
Beautiful, scenic course.
Beautiful course with rolling hills and no two holes the same. Need to keep ball in the fairways as rough was thick and sometimes difficult to find your ball. Greens in great shape and rolling true. Lots of trees lining many holes; very little bare spots, even in the rough. Course maintained very well. A challenging but fair golf course.
Thank you for your comments and we want you to have a positive experience when you play Big Run , unfortunately we had over 7 inches of rain in the previous 10 days which made for tough mowing catch up.
please give us another shot once things dry out.
