Very Decent Shape
See my 8/15/19 review. Enjoyed Big Run so much a couple of weeks ago went back for another crack at it. Conditions have improved on the 18th fairway. Folks are friendly and it's in decent shape....not the best but it's still a very fun routing. A couple of bumpy putts this round but overall very acceptable. Of course the bunkers need work they have for several years. All and all we had a wonderful day playing mid-afternoon in 3 hours. $35-$40 value. Recommend as the old school clubhouse is nice and based on one of the reviews below folks that complain probably deserved what they got. Act like entitled pain in the butts, expect perfect conditions, don't take care of the course in the least and must be coddled at every turn. Then they take 5 1/2 hours plus to play ruining the experience for everyone behind them. Thank god I wasn't following their "outing."
Rude staff and poor conditions
Firstly, the staff didn't seem too concerned with actually accommodating our golf outing. We planned to have a short 30 minute meeting prior to our outing for our league and the waitress at the time says "you people just keep moving around!" The connotation and tone of her voice was condescending and dare I say a little racist. We are all of a particular race. We used the course rating from their site to calculate our groups' handicaps and they had put all the tee boxes we would have used up towards the ladies boxes. Along with the tee boxes the bunkers are more rock than actual sand. Pray you dont go in them. Also the bathrooms have that old building stagnant urine smell. 55 dollars was a bit steep for how poorly maintained the course was in this late in the season. I will not be returning to this course. I remember this course way better back in the day I dont know what changed.
Bad golf
Meh course always closes two holes when it rains and doesn’t tell you and makes you show up and then continues to charge you full price..smh
Awesome
This course is amazing. Challenging and fun. Not your typical course
Best golf course in the area. Very challenging and very affordable. This course is always in great condition.
Worse fairways ever
Great course, really challenging and beautiful layout. However, horrible conditions and probably the worst fairways I've ever played. They looked diseased, unkept, weeds everywhere, bare spots all over of dirt/mud and went from the tee box to the fringe of the greens! Really a shame as it's an awesome old course that could be tour caliber without all the neglect!
Overall
Overall a challenging course. They do have several fairways that need work. Don’t overpay based on what this course once was.
Weather has caused issues this season
Scroll down and read my previous reviews of this course that I play every season in late May. I really do love this place it's a fun interesting challenging track....playing here since 1979. While the course has dried out from the ridiculously wet spring - 18th hole first part of the fairway on the par 5 is still a mess and GUR. It's all part of Big Run's charm....this happens about once a decade. Greens were in very decent shape and a tad slower than what I expected for August. With the really hot weather this year (after the wet) unfortunately the poa anna in the fairways and green fringes got burned out/sketchy so just deal with it and roll your ball a little to better grass. It's all about weather conditions and the super is doing his best just remember that. Sand traps need some sand in them as well. But overall Big Run is visually stimulating and not your run of the mill routing or what you'd expect - lots of up and downs with fun green complexes - keep your ball below the hole if you can! Nets to warm up and an old school proshop/clubhouse/bar/locker room with showers - easily one of my top ten favorite clubhouses of Chicagoland public golf....just wonderful it still exists. The folks are nice and since everyone else was at Medinah watching the BMW we were blessed with a wide open tee sheet and perfect golf weather enjoying mid-afternoon/twilight rate - nice 4 hour pace. 3,5 stars normally a solid 4. $35-$40 value. Still highly recommend.
Dead fairways
$70 to play a really cool course from a visual standpoint with up and down holes and incredible par 5’s....but horrendous fairway conditions, bunkers with a clay/mud mixture with TERRIBLE cart paths. There were spots off several greens in the fringe where you couldn’t putt through it. The layout really is second to none in the area but just in crappy shape for the money.
Big Run big challenge
Big Run is one of the most challenging courses in the Chicagoland area. It doesn't get much press but should. They need to make repairs and upkeep but well worth the money.
