Overall
Overall a challenging course. They do have several fairways that need work. Don’t overpay based on what this course once was.
Weather has caused issues this season
Scroll down and read my previous reviews of this course that I play every season in late May. I really do love this place it's a fun interesting challenging track....playing here since 1979. While the course has dried out from the ridiculously wet spring - 18th hole first part of the fairway on the par 5 is still a mess and GUR. It's all part of Big Run's charm....this happens about once a decade. Greens were in very decent shape and a tad slower than what I expected for August. With the really hot weather this year (after the wet) unfortunately the poa anna in the fairways and green fringes got burned out/sketchy so just deal with it and roll your ball a little to better grass. It's all about weather conditions and the super is doing his best just remember that. Sand traps need some sand in them as well. But overall Big Run is visually stimulating and not your run of the mill routing or what you'd expect - lots of up and downs with fun green complexes - keep your ball below the hole if you can! Nets to warm up and an old school proshop/clubhouse/bar/locker room with showers - easily one of my top ten favorite clubhouses of Chicagoland public golf....just wonderful it still exists. The folks are nice and since everyone else was at Medinah watching the BMW we were blessed with a wide open tee sheet and perfect golf weather enjoying mid-afternoon/twilight rate - nice 4 hour pace. 3,5 stars normally a solid 4. $35-$40 value. Still highly recommend.
Dead fairways
$70 to play a really cool course from a visual standpoint with up and down holes and incredible par 5’s....but horrendous fairway conditions, bunkers with a clay/mud mixture with TERRIBLE cart paths. There were spots off several greens in the fringe where you couldn’t putt through it. The layout really is second to none in the area but just in crappy shape for the money.
Big Run big challenge
Big Run is one of the most challenging courses in the Chicagoland area. It doesn't get much press but should. They need to make repairs and upkeep but well worth the money.
Nice course - good condition - good value
We had a very good time nicely laid out, and well-kept course. Only thing is there could be better markings on the golf course. Without a rangefinder you were pretty much lost.
Scenic course
Course was in great shape except for 18th hole that had water damage. Completely understandable with the weather we’ve had. Scenic course with a lot of elevation changes. Definitely will play again!
Great challenging layout
Course layout is so fun and nice challenge. Love the long par 5 9th AMD awesome over water par 3's on the back. Greens were so smooth and in great shape.
Big Run = Big Fun
Beautiful, long, and challenging course. Great value for how nice the course is!
Wet
Given the rain we have experienced recently, the course had fairways closed and the 18th hole tees were moved forward by 200 yards.
Second Visit Thoughts
I last visited this course back in the fall when the tree dense course and plentiful leaves made finding golf balls nearly impossible if you were just off the fairways. Thankfully, this time most of the leaves were still up in the trees so finding tee shots was much easier.
While I think there are some interesting holes, this course has definitely been a victim of the wet spring weather. There were some areas of the golf course where standing water was an issue, and the par 5 18th hole was basically converted to a short uphill par 4 because almost the entire fairway was too wet to be maintained. While I think it was smart to shorten the hole to a par 4 based on the wet conditions, the temporary tee box was basically an area of the rough which had been mowed down. This was a good idea, but the teeing area was made too small for 4 different sets of tees and the result was a muddy mess. This area should have either been expanded, or multiple temporary teeing areas should be used to avoid having to tee off from a muddy tee box.
I want to like this course, but it feels like it's long past its prime and is no longer maintained to its potential. While conversing with one of my playing partners, I heard that the owners have decided to sell the property. Maybe this is why the golf course and facility seem very dated and poorly maintained, but I think it's safe to say I likely won't be returning to play this course again.
Always solid
Big Run is such a gem. True test of golf, always in good shape. Just love this course. A must play.
