Played on the 4th of July
The course was not busy on the 4th of July. Course is very long and is tough for beginners with trees everywhere. I played for $35 using golfnow as a single player, a great deal for this upper class course. I was paired up with 2 players but one player was a poor player and should not have been on this long course hitting the ball 75 yards at a time which made the round take forever. The course is always in great condition and the pins were in tough locations. I will play this course any time I can get a good deal.
Big Run - correctly name
Great course, love the layout! More difficult than the rating implies, with the hilly terrain and tree lined fairways you gotta bring your A game. But that's what makes it so much fun - a great challenge! Big Run provides a wide variety of holes, some difficult and some just plain challenging! We'll be back!
Best course I have played....
Awesome round that both myself and my friend enjoyed. Paired up with 2 other folks and we all had a blast. Pace was good and ranger tried to keep it up. Everything else was 5 stars.
Nice course
Nice course , but it took 5 and a half hours to play 18 holes . To long for us 4 hours is more then enough . May time was extremely slow
Course is challenging but so is staff
I was a single matched up with a threesome. The cashier gave me a cart key and sent me on my way. After loading my bag, they announced over the speaker that me and my threesome were on the tee. So I drove to the first tee and stood around for 5-10 minutes. No starter and no threesome showed up and the group ahead was leaving the green. I teed off and figured I would wait for the threesome for a couple minutes before heading out alone. Then a course employee yells to me "What are you doing?!" You are with a threesome and one of them is riding with you! Our tee time had passed by 7 minutes already. I happily picked up my partner and we went off. However, 3 holes later we were no being harassed by a marshal that we were a hole behind! Later we caught the group in front of us and waited on every hole. Lastly, a group of 13 year old boys cut into us on 17 to slow us down even more. After passing them on the 18th tee and explaining we weren't allowing them to continue in front of us we finally finished our 5 1/2 hour round! Ridiculous that we get harassed early because they don't use a starter and then end up dealing with the slow play issues that they didn't resolve in front of us.
1960
Very well kept and challenging course. Club house should have been remodeled 40 years ago. Staff not very friendly.
beautiful course.
excellent staff. my playing partner was late because of a miscommunication and the starter was very understanding. make sure you get a cart, this course is long. beautiful scenic course. great putting green to warm up. newer carts with laser pointer for yardage.
by far my favorite course on the south side.
thanks for a great round. I will be back.

Slow pace
This is a great golf course however the pace of play is rediculois we teed off at 11:00am and it took close to 6 hours to play 18 on a Saturday. If I ever play here again it will be at twilight or first thing in the morning
Big Run, Big Challenge
I have always loved this track. We started playing here back in the early 70's. I thought the playing conditions were the best I've seen in years.
Friday Greens
Great course with a slope of 142. Most holes have elevated tee boxes and very little out of bounds so the course is geared towards the big hitter. Multileveled greens and Friday pin placement make for an interesting day with the putter.
"BIG RUN" "BIG GUNS"
I have played this course one time in 2014, I shot the worst score ever. Most of the tee boxes are elevated, I was clipping the tree crowns ending up in a poor 2nd shot position. This past experience was Awesome! If I lived closer to this course I would make it a weekly must. "Great Couse" "Great Food" I'll be back!
Great layout, bunkers need work and staff needs a lesson in customer service
Course is really fun and tough, but sand has a lot of rocks.
The pro shop workers need to take a class in customer service. Prob won't be back do to my experience with them.
Stay Away
The course was in poor shape and very gimmicky. The rough was patchy and ground far too hard
There was a three group backup on a par three on the back nine
Big Run
Tough course as it has been through the years. Course was in great shape. Was able to find ball in rough, when not in fairway. Pace of play in the past has been horrendous, but today never had to stop until the 16th to let a twosome play thru.
Clubhouse is a little run down. Took a little bit of time to get service after round for lunch, but after that service and food were fine. I suggest getting out as early as you can. For tough courses, it can get backed up later in the day.
Uphill again?
The course is hilly, with plenty of trees to force you to play smart. Hit not the trees and you're best off taking your medicine and hitting back to the fairway. The greens are strongly sloped and a little slow. that is a blessing, for if the greens were fast, there would be some impossible greens to putt. As it is, stay below the hole. Many holesplay to an elevated green, such that you don't see the bottom of the pin. Usually you should take an extra club for the distance.
Still a Fav course
This is a favorite course of mine. It's always tough.
Challenging but exceptional course
Great golf course. Nearly all greens elevated unlike most of the courses in Chicago. Greens can be brutally tough (11 was unplayable above the hole. Impossible to keep it on the green if you are on wrong tier). Except for that one hole the rest were tough but fair. I'm a 7 handicap and this is one of my favorite courses in the area. You will feel exhausted after the round. Mentally challenging with many hilly lies. Plays like the Robert Trent Jones golf trail.
Great Value, Great Course
Great course layout and well maintain, enjoyed all 18 holes very much! Lots of elevation change which is unusual for courses in this area makes play fun and challenging. One of the coolest par 3's I have ever played (13th hole) at 225 yards from the tips over water from an elevated tee.
Beautiful, challenging and fun!
BIG BAD RUN
Course is in great shape and very lush. Rough is tough to get out of and the fairways aren't rolling much as summertime because of the grass length. Do yourself a favor and play the green tees at 6200 yards versus white tee 6700 yards. You'll have much more fun and it's still plenty of challenge (133 slope from green tees). I love Big Run but will only give it four stars because there are several places where your ball is in the fairway and tree branches block you out from a normal approach. There are a few trees or branches I'd cut down to improve playability. Folks are very nice there and extremely welcoming. Our group enjoyed our day and thanks to the weather forecasters predicting rain all morning we were virtually the only ones there. Always an honor to get out to Big Run.
A Course That you have to try at least once
It is an extremely challenging layout. Warning, don't try to walk it unless you are in good shape.
