Course is in excellent condition
Lick Creek was in excellent condition when I played it on 8/13/13. The greens were emaculate/rolling true and the fairways were like hitting off of carpet. Very impressed with the maintenance and condition of this course. I will definitely be back!
Very scenic course.
Course was very busy. Pace of play was about 4 1/2 hrs. and slightly backed up on some holes. Challenging and a long course for women. Course in good shape and well maintained.
Nice layout
Great wooded setting. Greens are fast and the place is in nice shape. Well worth the money at the moment.
Best Course in Illinois for the Price!
Best Course in Illinois for the Price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lick Creek - Very Unpolished
Lick Creek has a lot of potential to be a good course. It has a good variety of hole length and design, and almost enough length to be a true championship course. This course demands accuracy and is a true target golf course. However, it falls short in 3 key areas:
1) Tee boxes are sloped - almost none of the tee boxes are what you would expect - flat, and half of them have not a single area that is flat to hit from. This is very frustrating on a tight, target golf course that demands accuracy from the tee.
2) Rough burned out/dead & trees/brush untrimmed - when playing this course, look out for a slightly wayward drive finding it's way into serious trouble due to burned out/dead rough. This trouble includes areas around the trees that are not trimmed, so thick vegetation will swallow up your ball and at a minimum frustrate you while you look for a slightly mishit drive. This leads to slower pace of play, as well.
3) Unprofessionally graded greens - top notch courses have a process where the architect ensures the greens have consistency and no "humps", or small bumps that cause "funny" breaks. We've all played courses where the greens take wierd breaks and it's due to this. The greens at Lick Creek are very difficult to read due to this.
Additionally, this municipal course does not enforce pace of play policies. If playing on a weekend morning, expect at least a 5 hour round.
With all of that being said, the course is decent, just be ready to have silly things happen and for the round to be slow. It's definitely cheap to walk ($20 greens fee on the weekend) - in general you get what you pay for.
