Great layout, great value
I play a lot of golf and love the set up of this course. Fairways and greens always in good shape. Great value!
Worth the drive
I live over an hour away, but it's worth it. Good links style course. Lots of rolling hills and tiered greens. Price is great...only $32 on a Tuesday morning. Good food at the turn too. Twosome took 3 hours.
Scotland in Zion
When the winds pick up, this course can remind those who have played in Scotland. The staff are one of the best!
Great layout. Links style with lots of room.
Wind adds the challenge. Only negative is the drive. But it’s worth it
Great price ffor time of year
Great value for the first round of the year. Grass and greens not really greened up yet, but was good to swing the clubs. Overall considering that it was still March course was in decent shape will only get better once it starts warming up.
Maybe better in summer
Like the links style layout, only bad part was poor drainage, it did rain couple days prior so Mabey should allow four or five days to dry out , staff is very good
NIce course... great price. Always looking to play this course when I book tee times
One of the best available to you and me!
I wish there were negative things to say about Shepherd's Crook, because it is an amazing place that I don't want too many people to find out about. But that would be selfish of me. The reality is...Shepherd's is an outstanding golf layout, always in impeccable condition, the staff is friendly and helpful and the food is very good.
GolfNow makes it easy to find the tee time that suits your schedule and there are always select Hot Deals available throughout the day. At SC I usually pay $60 for 18 holes of amazing golf on a weekend morning with a cart.
The course is a fabulous layout. The greens have always played very firm and fast and until you get comfortable with the speed, you will definitely have a few three putts. The first 3 holes allow you to warm-up, with generous fairways and larger greens. Hole #4 is where this course starts to challenge players of any skill level. The par 5s (3 of them) are each true 3-shotters but are wide off the tee all the way to the green. There is a nice distance and design variety to the par 3s and 4s.
The upshot is that Shepherd's Crook is a great public golf course, whose condition will not disappoint you while the golf challenges every aspect of your game. You should give it a try.
Great Course
Shepherds Crook is a fine course; very fun & reasonably challeging. Nice layout & fun greens.
Good course
Shepards Crook is a good layout, several greens are not receptive to holding shots. Weekend rate is too expensive, especially for seniors.
Hidden gem?
I am reluctant to give this course such high praise in as much as I LOVE the price/value.
Maybe the more that people find out about this course, the more will play there and the price and pace of play will go up.
Wonderful Links course with great conditions.
Best Value in Lake County
I play Shepherd's Crook regularly as my "home course." This is a links style course that you never tire of playing. Conditions are always good and the staff is friendly. The four sets of tees offer degrees of difficulty suitable to all handicaps. The tips offer significant challenge for even the low handicappers and when combined with wind and selected pin positions, they present a test for the best golfers.
There is a Player's Club program that includes CDGA handicap, discounts on green fees, rewards points, exclusive events and a handicap bracketed match play championship with season ending scramble and banquet.
This course is the best value in Lake County. Lack of a driving range is the only negative.
If you are serious about your golf, don't overlook this one.
Best Value on the North Shore of Chicago
Shepherd's Crook is a beautiful course with challenging features. It's sculpted out of the natural geology with many elevation changes and a great combination of trees and links conditions. There are no homes on the course, so you feel like you're playing in a peaceful wilderness. Every hole is very different with some interesting challenge. Pace of play is excellent and the restaurant offers great food and great deals. It's unbelievable that the greens fees are normally $40. As a senior, I paid $29 last Friday. It's located in Zion, IL which is pretty far North from Chicago, but I've heard many people say (including me) that this course is the best value all around on the North Shore. It will challenge you, but you can also go low (which for me is shooting 90!). Have fun and play well.
I think Shepherd's Crook is a gem of a course. Love the feel of the course and the privacy. Its pretty wide open and requires shot making skills. There's a premium on accuracy. Its a real value!!
nice day of golf
Had a nice round of golf with my Grandson before he returned to college. Conditions were very good.
