Tough course, much improved
Long Run is an 18 hole municipal course in Louisville, KY. The facility has gone through good times and bad over the years with regard to course conditions and staff friendliness. At this time the course is in pretty good condition relative to most municipals I’ve played.
The course is under new management in 2020 and they’ve really worked hard to make this a great venue. Nice clubhouse and the practice range is improving. The zoysia fairways are in good shape right now (still some persistent bare spots) and the greens are B+.
The wooded course itself has a relatively easy front nine and a very challenging back nine. Holes 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15 require both accuracy and distance with big numbers in the cards for carelessness.
7055 yds from the tips and 5400 from forward. There’s a place for everyone.
This place sucks
Entering into the hallowed grounds of Long Run golf course, patrons and golfers alike will be immediately greeted into an atmosphere exuding in mediocrity. Sandwiched in between beautiful Persimmon Ridge and Valhalla, you’ll become quick enemies with the country club rejects in the parking lot who reek of unwarranted entitlement. With staff scowling at paying customers and groaning over the easiest of requests, a palpable buzz arises that you and your other comrades are about to have a horrible time. With no grass to be found on the range, you’re almost guaranteed to be shanking all shots and damaging your clubs due to the impenetrable soil. As you roll up to the #1 tee in your gas cart from 1987, you will likely decide to crack a beer that you stuffed in your bag from home, understandably not wanting to pay an absurd $4 per skunked beer. Just as the sweet nectar of your home brew touches your lips, you will be disrupted by the unprofessional, hair-lipped and moronic head pro who reeks of cigs and mildew who unbeknownst to you will be ruining your entire day. With the deranged lunatic irrationally threatening to call the authorities, you will have no choice but to make a scene and expose the entire operation.
All depends on expectations
I give the course two stars because honestly it’s not a great golf course for anybody who plays private courses or upper class public courses, but it is a good course for certain people. It’s a good golf course for beginner golfers it’s not very penal. There are few water hazards, basically no rough, flat slow greens that roll true, and hardly any bunkers. However on the back side the holes are surrounded in an arena of Forrest, that if hit into will be a lost ball.
It isn’t conditioned overly well, as the tee boxes are half dirt boxes, the few bunkers have no sand and have grass growing out of them, and the dead grass clippings are left on all over the rough.
However the course is a great value, the cheapest 18 holes in the city, and if one is looking to have fun and not be pushed by advanced golfers behind them, then this golf course does it’s job.
There are some fun holes, the 8th is a wedge par 3 over a tiny pond, and the 15th is a long par 4 with a forced carry over a pond. Back nine is much tougher with more area to lose balls so the hitting the fairly large short grass is imperative.
Lastly, if you come to long run expecting a championship course you will be disappointed, but if one expects any easier course to learn how to play the game at their pace then Long Run is a perfect course.
Cow Pasture
I enjoy playing new courses but this course will never be one I visit again until some major fixes happen. Hardly any actual grass in fairway with overgrown crab grass spreading over the fairway. Tee boxes were so hard and bare broke two tees just trying to tee the ball up. Greens were hard and couldn’t keep anything to stick didn’t matter if you were hitting a lob wedge or 5 iron. One of the worst courses in Louisville. Paid 32$ for green fee and cart and probably paid 32$ too much!! This is a sad excuse someone labeled as a golf course.
Poor Course- Extremely poor staff
I like to play this course because its close to home. However, I have played this course about 20 times in the last 2 years, and I have always been greeted by the rudest staff I have ever experienced at a golf course or country club. The younger guys who work behind the register were nice. But I have been denied a golf cart at 5:30 because the managers didn't want to put it away (I was only playing 9), and most recently witnessed one of the managers bully two young teens about if they purchased a 1.50 pull cart (they did and were forced to show receipt). They make a fairly laid back course not enjoyable to play. Also, greens are always in bad shape, tee boxes are a joke, and a couple holes on the back 9 always have unplayable locations due to "repairs"- but nothing ever gets repaired.
Very good Value.. Very Good Condition
Greens were in wonderful condition. overall we had a Very good day and enjoyed this golf course
Surprised
Greens were nice, all else wet but surprised at course overall
The back 9 is always a challenge
The course was in good shape and played a bit slow for late afternoon, but I was a single behind a number of large groups.
There are a few rough spots, but definitely worth the money.
Love the course layout but............................
Do not wear good or light colored clothing as the golf carts are filthy. Be ready to move your ball on the fairway to a spot that has grass or isn't infiltrated with crab grass. The greens while slow were in very good condition. The front nine is a great confidence booster that you will need to handle the more challenging back nine. Overall, I loved the layout but the fairways need a lot of work.
crab grass
green where OK, tee box , fairways were crab grass or dirt, tee box was many crab grass
Slow pace of play, no ranger, no refund
Very disappointed in the service for the course. Will not return
great greens
This course is in very bad shape except for the greens which were in very good shape in saying that you have to have grass in the fairways to hit the ball onto the greens.
batter days
The course has the potential to be very challenging and enjoyable however the runways and teens are in poor condition. The management shouldlower ttheprice if tthey don't want to take care of the course.
Terrible course
Not going to pull any punches here...this is a terrible course. Horrible conditions, many bare spots in fairways and rough, bare spots are like off of concrete. Greens are chewed up from unrepaired ball marks. Seems to be very little if any maintenance work gong on here. Saw several new, inexperienced (re: bad) golfers on a Sunday afternoon slowing things down drastically. Hey, you have to learn to play sometime and I get that, but Sunday afternoon when course is packed is no time to do it with players that will literally swing and miss a half dozen times before thy hit the ball and goes 25 yards.
This was my first experience at a Louisville metro course. If this is "par for the course" at other Lou metro courses, you can bet I won't be playing any others. My advice is to stay away from this place.
If you do go play here, even from the #2 tees there are several long par 4's of well over 400 yards. I probably should have played one more set of tees up.
Terrible condition and overbooked
The round started off by reaching the first tee at our prescribed tee time and having to wait while four groups teed off. Once we reached our drives, we had to look for grass to place the ball. The fairways looked like the bottom of a dried up pond with surface cracks and nothing but occasional crab grass, johnson grass, and sporadic normal fairway grass. It's a shame that the course is not maintained better because it has a nice layout and is challenging enough.
Poor Condition
While the overall layout of the course is pretty easy, the course conditions make it a pretty difficult play. The fairways are extremely burnt up, the worst I've seen in Louisville...sometimes you hit a perfect drive in the fairway and it burns through the hard spots into the rough. The rough itself was long and overgrown and poorly manicured. The greens were very inconsistent, especially on the back side. Several of the greens felt like you could fall through them at any point in time. Other greens were so hard you could hit a perfect shot and end up 30 yards over. The pace of play was also pretty bad... our tee time was 8:06am and we didn't tee off til about quarter after. We finished our round at almost 1pm. Very Poor!
I know this is a metro parks course, but this one is especially bad and is not worth anywhere near what they're asking... I do not recommend this course to anyone, novice or expert or anywhere in between.
July 19 2015
Course in even worse than expected condition following recent weather issues. Many fairways with no grass... Baked mud. Golf carts so slow you fear they won't climb any hill
Could be so much better
You get what you pay for at this course . Greens were in very good shape but the rest of the course needed some good TLC . The bologna and cheese sandwich I had at the turn was dry and look like it was just slapped together . It was busy but the pace of play was good .
Course Worth Playing
Long Run is a course that is worth the trip. Moderatly interesting front nine and very interesting back nine. Greens are in very good condition but, the tees and fairways are in need of some help in places. I will definitly play it again.
