Golfer Reviews
Good course for the price
I play here when I get too comfortable playing at Bowie golf course. The course is challenging but fun
Enjoyed the round but...
Came from out of town. It is a nice course, the layout is not the easiest but still played well. The greens were great! The bunkers were overgrown, so much so that lots of the bunkers didn't even have rakes near them. Granted, it had DUMPED rain the day before so they didn't get a chance give them any maintenance before I got out there. I will say, for 40$ it was worth it! 3 hour round by myself which was great. Being from California, the sounds of the birds, ducks, geese, and turtles in the ponds were great! It is worth playing at least once that's for sure!
Good value
Course is in good shape, but sand bunkers aren't. Doesn't look like anyone has maintained them for a while, too bad. Expected more from a country club.
First Time @ Walden
Course was in good condition (fairways & greens) on Father's Day. Pace was slower as one might expect. Lots of natural hazard carries and trouble. Course fairly narrow at points along the way. Traps needed a LOT of attention.
18th hole carry from the blue tee over water is more than a challenge for all but big hitters.
Front side quirky, back nine legit.
Eh...
Let me start by saying, I am a high handicapper and far from a golf snob. I enjoy the game and play as often as I can almost wherever I can.
I have never played at Walden so I took a chance on the unknown. I did not do a golf now discount price because it was last minute and I reserved the right to change my mind at the last minute without penalty. So I paid full price, about $42 on a Tuesday morning about 10am. I played by myself, and had little wait time dealing with the groups ahead of me (though I started bumping into people after the turn) - The staff was beyond friendly and the clubhouse was very nice.
Its not a terribly long course, but it requires accuracy because once you go in the woods its over, very thick in there (trust me) - So I appreciate that challenge. I kept the big stick in the bag more than I usually do. The holes were well laid out and each presented a descent challenge as well.
The course itself left a bit to be desired. The part that sticks out the most was the overgrown grass on the fairways. It was often hard to tell where the fairway ended and the rough begins. Its like the whole place was covered in a 5 o'clock shadow. The track is nice and could be picturesque..if it had the benefit of a nice shave. The greens were recently aerated, a necessary evil, so I can't talk bad about the sand. The greens did look really good considering. I would like to see them at their full glory....and sand traps were the pits...
Also, the course weaves through the surrounding neighborhood and on many holes the proximity to peoples homes is a little too close for comfort. And I think because of this, the locals treat the course like the local park. I encountered a few dog walkers, power walkers, and kids playing in the fairway; also a group of young men fishing in the water hazard on #7 (I think it was 7) - this was a bit distracting, especially since the little girls didn't help me find my errand ball :)
Somehow though on the back nine it seemed like the course had gotten a little better manicured, but not much.
All in all if you want to play and have some fun, this place won't kill you. Its not worth full price though, if you can avoid it. Some improvements to the landscaping will go a long way on this one.
Would I play there again? Maybe, I am always willing to try most things twice, just to make sure - maybe I caught it on a bad day.
Frost delay at 47 degrees?
Waited a half hour for a frost delay in April when it never got below 44, and was currently 47. Then when we got to the back 9, they had started a number of groups on 10 so it really slowed down. Not the first time they did that to us (we are usually the first ones out, or close to it). Also, the greens were aerated, which is fine except the sand they used had lots of rocks so putting was impossible... big 5$ off - not worth it.
Great greens and challenging for the length
First off for this early in the year the greens were excellent, best I've played in Anne Arundel county. Challenging tight fairways are still fun for an average golfer as the length isn't overpowering. Fairways and tees are a little hurt but should recover well as the grass is just starting to come in. Well worth the money as I paid less then $30 with a hot deal.
Very nice course
Was my first visit there but NOT my last
I live in Mo.county. I have courses all around me but this was worth the drive........staff was very nice........fairway in great shape as well as the greens.........very nice country club setting
Can't wait to play again
Be careful!
Green is in very very good condition. But fairway and rough are not good at all.
If you are not a low handy player, don't play here till you are better with your score. Houses are surrounded and you may hit either cars or houses if you slice.
It is very tough to have a good score cause of the obstacles.
Great Value
I play here a couple times a month. This course always has great Hot Deals, and even if you can't snag one of those the course is priced very fair. I have never spent more than 4.5 hours to play 18 even on the busiest of days.
HIdden Gem
I have lived in the community for 9 years now and have seen the ups and downs of Walden- I believe they had three management changes during this time- as of 2013, the course was a dog track but I still enjoyed playing it because it was affordable, challenging, and I could always get tee times.
Over the last two seasons, the course conditions have turned around completely- it's obvious that the new managment and the greens crew have been putting considerable investment of time, money, and effort into improving the golf course, and it's really paying dividends. Walden is in the best shape I've seen it in over the last decade, and it's an absolute joy to play. I have played it dozens of times over the last two seasons and watching the course transform has been great.
You can't really get a better value for your round than this course, in terms of the challenging layout, course conditions, and normal pace of play.
Unfortunately, no course seems to be immune from the hacker traffic that holiday weekends bring- I played here on Columbus Day and left after 13 holes and 4 1/2 hours of backups, but on a regular day I can play here as a single or double and expect to be on and off the course in three hours. There are VERY few other courses that I could ever expect to do that on.
Walden ANEW!!!
Wow, this is not the same course from a couple years ago. A must see while the rates are FANTASTIC. They have brought this course back to life and is worth the trip out to see the character of this course returned to its beauty. Still challenging, but that's the nature of this design it forces you to play all 14 clubs in your bag and not go driver wedge every hole, it's a course of strategy and sport. It's daring, exciting and not your routine golf course.
bring a a couple of beers, it's going to be a long day
This is a REALLY tough course in spots. It's just that simple.
The course has a lot of verticality and a lot of the fairways and approach shots are really tight and demand precision...and length, together. Part of the problem is that they have built condos right up onto the course. Part of the problem is that the front 9 and #10 are on hilly property. Put the two together and it is chaotic at times. There are some brilliant holes on this course but most of it is average and some of it is simply bogus, let us say, "very humble". In the end it's a decent round but you will remember it most for the brilliant holes and the condos that are almost everywhere, running right along most of the fairways.
A great course to play cheap on the weekend and usually on good weekends in good weather it gets very crowded. It's just too close to DC, smack dab in the middle of Crofton and too good of a deal for it to not get crowded. The clubhouse is pretty good though and goes a long way to make up for some of the "uninspiring" holes on the back 9.
Unfair Staff
The course was in fairly good condition and present a decent challenge. I hurt my back after about the 8th hole and tried to play through the pain. I then attempted to get a rain check after making it through the tenth hole while the pain creased. The gentleman at the Pro Shop said that he could not give me a rain check due to the amount of time that it took us to play the ten holes. I then ask the guy is he new to golf and if he could add or tell time. I arrived to the course at 10:30 to practice for my 11:30 tee time. I started to play at 11:18 and returned to the clubhouse at 2:00. I tried to tell this gentleman that the course crowded and the slow play was in effect during the entire time while on the course. I got impression that this guy did not want me back on this course. "SO I WILL NOT BE BACK"
poor communication
We booked this tee time on Wednesday afternoon, for Thursday play. Arrived and were told that the bridge leading to the front nine was condemned and that we would have to play the back nine only. We were told the knew about the bridge on Tuesday, but that no one had communicated this to Golf Now. We were the second group out in the morning and finished as a threesome in 1 1/2 hours, but had to then wait behind several groups starting play. The back nine took 3 hours to play. We would not have driven and hour from Gainesville to play nine holes twice.
fairways bad, greens bad
Played 9/19/2015. Course was not in good shape. Layout is fine.
The turn around
As a local resident I have truly seen the ups and downs of Walden over the years and to see what they have done here in 2 years is amazing. The staff is awesome and willing to help you out. The course is in great shape it was punched recently and had came out of it amazing. The greens run true and at a great speed. Yes they know they need to keep working to make it what they want it to be but it truly is in great shape and is the best deal by far in the area
Disappointing
Had not played this course in two years because conditions had deteriorated. Saw promotion for the best 18 hole price we could get on Sunday morning and it was Walden. New carts greeted us who along with Walden Community Association president who reported spending more than one-half million dollars on the course during the past few years -- and that with recent aeration of the greens the promo price was offered. He also reported that the course had the second largest number of rounds played in MD during past month. My advice -- wait for the course to get better and wait for the course to learn how to manage the number of rounds it books. This is a 4 four course that took nearly 5 1/2 hours to play on an early Sunday morning. The course needs rangers to move foursomes along, the course needs to mow the grass near the greens and along the fairways to keep players from the extending the time of play looking for balls. It could be a good course, still needs LOTs of work, and pace of play is a killer! Will stay away for another two years and hope it gets better. The Walden association needs to see how well run, how well maintained is the similar course Fairway Hills in Columbia.
Greens are immaculate.
17 out of 18 greens were immaculate. They were so good you really can't walk on someone's line. Tee boxes were in bad shape but as long as i can put a tee in the ground i can care less what the tee box looks like. Fairways were so so. I really enjoyed playing this course. It challenges your ability to make great shots.
ALL 18 HOLES AND THE BRIDGE ARE OPENED! The bridge is not and was not condemned at any point. The bridge, after an inspection that was done on Tuesday was however closed for two days, Thursday and Friday while necessary repairs were being made. This was communicated as quickly as possible once we were given the information. We do apologize that your experience was not pleasurable and hope you will give Walden another chance.
