Heron Lakes Golf Club - Great Blue Course
About
Heron Lakes Golf Course was opened for public play in 1972. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and is located off of I-5 next to the Portland International Raceway. It was named after the Blue Herons that inhabit the many lakes and ponds around the course. There are two courses, the Great Blue and the Green Back.
The Great Blue has been rated for years as the most difficult golf course in the Portland Area. It is a links style course with water, tall rough, narrow fairways, and sand everywhere. Most fairways on the Great Blue narrow to small greens that roll and pitch in several directions.

That’s a green. Notice how my ball did not roll, but bounce every two feet. Photo submitted by u790885909 on 10/09/2024

Not happy with the players assistant
We were playing at a good pace for a foresome. The twosome ahead was 1-1/2 shots ahead of us so we were not waiting on every shot, but the threesome behind us was 2 holes back. The Marshall came to us at the turn and said we needed to catch the group in front. We pointed out the group behind had not even teed up at the ninety hole yet. Within two holes we were waiting for the twosome ahead, the group behind was still two holes back and the Marshall again came up and said we had to stay with the group ahead. We just got done waiting to tee off and informed him if this as well. With three holes left as we were still waiting to hit on the tee box, guess who showed up? I don't know what kind of power trip that guy was on, but it's time to put that old horse out to pasture.
Thirsty
It was a 90 degree day. One person in our party was told there would be a beverage cart, there was none. I was ok without a beer, but I think a couple guys in our foursome would have enjoyed it. Staff is always friendly. Plenty of drinking water on course, so that is good. Conditions are good, lot of roll on the fairways.
Great blue
My buddy on 16 hit the green and missed the eagle... amazing conditions
perfect
Such an excellent track for being so close to town. Every hole on the back nine is perfect.
Pace of play horrible!
I love both courses for different reasons. However I can't play there if it takes 5 and a half hours. Started 20 minutes late and waited on almost every hole. Saw more then a full hole gap, and it seems the rare Marshall is to scared to say anything. Second time I've played recently where it seems they don't care about pace of play. It's killing the game!
Pre spring round
Went out last Sunday late afternoon. I should have known better. Still really wet. Total mudfest. I would say hold off until we dry out a little more. Otherwise, I always enjoy this course. Great value
Course in great shape
This Robert Trent Jones course is always a challenge, however yesterday it was not only a challenge, but it was in the best shape I have ever seen it. A great course at a great price. I will be back
So much potential
If you like mowers stalking you on every hole and the roar of race cars, this is your place. The course is great, greet layout and in really good shape. Nothing can be done about the racetrack being right next to four holes. But we encountered mowers on EVERY HOLE ON THE BACK NINE! We had to wait for them to move on many holes and (I swear I'm not exaggerating) there were three mowers and a utility vehicle on the 17 th fairway at the same time we were playing it. Needless to say this affected everyone in our group. This was the hottest day of the year and we teed off pretty early to avoid the heat (like many others). You'd think thud could wait until the heat of the day to mow when it's less crowded.
So even though I like this course a lot, I'd think twice before re-booking here. Especially with all Portland has to offer.
Great Course; slow play
They let me tee off in the middle of a tournament event so the play was incredibly slow. It would of been better if they told us about the tournament of space the tee times further apart. But I guess they need to make $ too.
Firm greens
It was hot out 93' wind was 10-15 mph
But you could not hold these greens even with a wedge
The water comes in play with the dry fairways, but it was fun.
Staff always friendly!
Dbleagle
Greens are bumpy and inconsistent. Green side bunkers didn't have much sand. Pace of play was slow. A group of five were in front of us, they had a money game going with 3 carts, they were extremely slow and very loud and obnoxious. This was a hot deal on golf now $17.
Both courses at Heron lakes are GEMS!
10 minutes from downtown Portland you'd never know it. These courses are fun to play! Challenging yet for some reason I always have fun. The blue course is more challenging than the greenback in my opinion, but both are worth the play!
Great Blue
Course was fantastic, pace too. Range and clubhouse could use some updating, but overall a great place to spend a few hours.
Fun course
This course has some challenging holes. It was fun. The course played pretty fast which made the balls roll nicely. The greens were somewhat inconsistent in speed but overall they were good.
Great Bargain
For the price you can't beat this Robert Trent Jones course. Look forward to playing again on a weekday.
Great Blue is Great
Best public course in Portland metro. But high handicappers should remember their manners and keep moving regardless of difficulties. Don't expect to break 100 unless your handicap is under 20.
The course is wide open with few shade trees. A great walk, but perhaps not on a hot day.
Great Blue Monster of Portland
This is one of the hardest courses in the area. Has taken me some time to learn how to play. Greens are always good. Final 4 holes are tough. The pin on 17 was ridiculous. Only bad part of the day besides the wind and lack of focus
Sloppy mud boog
I knew better than to play this course in the winter but I wanted to see if anything changed. Nothing has changed. Since this course was built on a wetlands it doesn't take much rain or moisture to make this course soggy and muddy. I lost balls in the middle of the fairway due to plugging in the mud. Surprisingly the course was busy.
Not 1 bunker was raked. Why? Every other course I have played this winter has had their bunkers prepared for play.
I'll be back in August after things dry out a couple of months. In the meantime I will stay at Stone Creek and the OGA.
This course has teeth!
great course, great time....
Too many twilight golfers wiyh carts
We played the front in 1 hr. 45 min. 2 hr 30 min. on the back!? Most courses this time of year have good rates for all you can golf later in the day with a cart, no marshal to supervise! Sooo what do you think, people jumping from hole to hole, playing in front of you, driving the golf carts wherever they want, etc. etc. making the back nine much longer and frustrating!
