Nice for the price
This course was excellent for the associated costs involved. I will definatly schedule to play again.
More difficult than you think
Don't be fooled by the length of this course. It's target golf and there are some long forced carries and lots of places to loose your golf ball. The entire front nine goes along the Little Patuxent River (which is more like a large stream) and is very low. It was cart path only and the fairways were very wet due to all the recent rain. The fairways were only in fair condition but the greens were good. They have quite a bit of slope which makes them surprisingly fast if you get on the wrong side of the hole. All in all fun to play (especially with a Golf Now deal time).
Decent Course
Decent Course in Central Md
A local favorite
I just really like this course. Just started playing recently. I just got back into the game after a long break. I've played 5 local courses in 3 weeks but played this 4 times in one week. Lots of hazards, water, lay ups. 10 is great. 17 also. The staff is nice and helpful. All the guys around are great. They do alot with the first tee program. I'm a GN loyalist, with my frequency of play I need a hot deal.
I play fast. Solo. Rain or shine. I will continue to play this at least 1-3 times a week. I'm sure it will get better with the weather. Please treat this place with respect.
Solid Course for the Price and Proximity to D.C.
Play here a bunch of times with friends due to price and easy drive from DC to the course. It is always in good shape and pace is never a problem. Not the most challenging or longest course, but is definitely a great place to play on the weekend if you're living in DC and aren't trying to splurge.
Nice course
Played the course from the tips. Some holes are pretty tight and as long as you're hitting them straight you can hit driver. Nice layout.
Nice Value
First time playing this course. It was well worth the drive out to Columbia. Nice course worth the value, early spring 9 hole round. Not busy and great pace of play for my daughter and I.
Poor Condition, Great Layout
I haven't played Fairway Hills in a few years, and after my last round, I won't be returning any time soon. The layout of this course is great. There are interesting holes, some challenging and some receptive to bad shots, but the quality of the course is not on par with the layout. I found the teebox, fairways and rough all below average for this time of year compared to other courses in the area. Too many bare patches.
However, my least favorite part of this course is the proximity of houses throughout the course. It is claustrophobic on some holes, even if your drive isn't too wayward, for example #16. I doubt I will be returning in the near future.
Overall a Good Experience
Fairway Hills is a nicely constructed course with water on nearly all the holes. Challenging, long par 4s are not a factor, since the course is not particularly long. However, it is tight & your irons & wedges will make the difference in your scoring. Since its early in the season, they aerated the greens which is normal, so it wouldn't bet fair to criticize them for having bumpy putting surfaces. The back 9 was closed because they had to rebuild the bridge on the 10th hole but that project should be completed before the golf season gets in full swing. Overall, FWH is a good bargain for the greens fee you pay; it also is almost never crowded so a 4 hour round is the norm on weekdays. One final note, walking is not a short stroll due to the distances between some of the holes & tee boxes. Do yourself a favor to speed up yr round - take a cart.
Fun course
Excellent course! considering - it was recently aerated - but the greens were fast - and held shots coming in....would recommend - AND - there are challenging holes - a course played more than once - would probably make it an easier course....
Closed Holes
NOt a bad place to play considering we used the deal from golfnow.com. My only issue is that some of the holes were closed due to maintenance and it would have been nice to know that info before we booked the round from the site. The hole we did play were in excellent shape and the grounds crew were working to make the holes we couldn't play ready for the season. I plan to go back soon.
Always fun to play when you can get a discounted price.
Balls sit up nicely on the Bermuda fairways. The last three holes are all you want.
Great value for the challenge
A true test from the blue tee's. Only 6000 yards, but with 131 slope, a good bit of course management is required. Ability to hit target area's is a must. A great challenge for anyone who takes their golf seriously. Sand traps were in great condition.
Bordeline PGA-event course
This is a nice course, not too long but it plays tough...the tee-shots and approach-shots are somewhat standard fare for a woods course, challenging but not too tight. The greens are lightning-fast and always have a significant pitch. Often surrounded by big bunkers and swales. The rough is no more than a few inches but thick. It is a nice layout nestled in and around plenty of houses but the houses are not too obtrusive. Where they have a real effect is in the OB markers everywhere, tight off the fairway though to be fair well out of the line of play. You have to stay on the course, though, hitting long shots off the tee or into the greens towards the houses will almost always be a play into a row of OB markers.
In any case this is a well-kept course, but still a county course, though I think it's a better course than Hobbits' Glen which is right in the same part of Columbia but that is a "community course" only open to the public on Mondays and even that will only last through their renovation. This is just a better course, so no loss there. But it is just not a beginners' course. Hobbits' Glen is a challenge. This is harder than Hobbits' Glen...it is easier in terms of the plays out of the rough but way harder to putt and there are a lot of blind shots off the tee. The 18th tee-shot is a 225 yard carry to the fairway from the black tees. #15 is a 215 yard par-3 surrounded by waste and OB markers. It's a good course, stern but fair, and the only two problems that I had with it was the traffic from Rte 108 on the northwest side running along #16-#18, the traffic running behind the tee on #7, and Columbia Rd running along #1, #2, #8, #9 and #10. It does get a bit noisy in places and there are a fair number of houses on the course but in general it is a good course and well worth the $40 that I paid with a cart. Oh the other problem was that for some reason a lot of couples play late in the afternoon and...to be kind...they slow up the course pretty badly. I ended-up skipping half the front side and coming back to it later.
need to return soon
Course in tournament prep, everything plush, greens holding but slow, growing in and ready for the mower to punish the golfers. Did not have to touch the ball much, thick fairways. I'm sure the slick greens will return and its real toughness will rule. Out of state 9 H/c wants to return, found the course challenging. Staff helped move along slow play on the back, slow putts aided that. Fluffy bunkers. Good time.
Sneaky course
My first time playing FH, I lost lot's of balls, lot's of hazzards that I didn't know about, greens were recently sanded and slow. I'll definitly play it again now that I know the course. Also, I found more balls than I lost. Great hot deal rate.
Call before you book
I've played here a few times before. I agree with most reviews in that the overall course length is no measure of the difficulty of some holes. That being said, on the day I played, the greens were terrible. Assuming they had recently been airrated, they were all full of sand and were extremely slow and uneven. I know this is a reality on any course , but the course should alert Golf Now to post it. By the way, nobody in the pro shop bothered to mention this when I was checking in. My playing partners were disappointed in this as well.
Nice Layout
Really enjoyed the layout. Its a shorter course but the layout forces layups and it plays longer than it really is. Quite a few hazards to keep you thinking. Long distance between some holes so get a cart.
