Golfer Reviews
Flooding from recent rains has impacted this course...
The cart bridge between 6 and 7 was apparently taken out by flooding this year and hasn't been fixed/replaced yet, so golfers are required to retreat back to the clubhouse and then proceed backwards from there to the 7th tee box -- a bit of a hike and a not insignificant inconvenience. Also related to the flooding, most greens are in bad shape, aerated and quite sandy as well as many low-lying fairway sections near the greens. They are working on it, but it will effect your golfing pleasure.
Greens in very poor condition
The green were in terrible condition. I understand they had some flooding about a month ago. I was very disappointed that they didn't notify me at anytime about the condition of the greens, or offer some type of discounted greens fee.
Greens Burnt
I like this course but last round was a rough one on the greens. Seems as though they over did it with the fertilizer because it was like putting on glass. Some greens didn't have much grass on them at all. Others looked like the Sahara Desert.
Average but has potential
Course was OK, but the greens were in bad shape! It could have been because of recent rains, but it seemed like they been neglected!
This course would be better once conditions improve.
Greens were in bad condition; brown from drought plus sand from recent aeration. Hopefully cooler weather & rain will bring this course into better playing conditions.
Staff members were very accommodating.
A lot of weather related damage
The fairways have not been cut due to the excessive amount of rain. The greens are in poor condition and the fairway short of the greens are washed out. For the price they are charging they really need to reduce the rates in half until the course is in better condition
nice layout, poor greens
This is an interesting course and for the golf now hot deal a good value. Not overly crowded so pace of play was great. The biggest problem was the condition of the greens and, to a lesser extent, some of the fairways. Almost all of the greens were without much grass - perhaps the result of several weeks of very hot weather. Some of the fairways were in great shape, but parts of others were not. Again, its been a long hot summer. Hopefully, with cooler weather coming next month conditions improve.
Greens were burnt
I really like this course but greens seemed to have been over fertilized. It was like putting on glass on some of he greens. Otherwise it is a good course but not this time around for me.
Not long but challenging
I have played this course a couple of times and I find it not long but quite challenging. Narrow fairways and usually trouble left/right and some other impediments in between the tee box and green. Definitely need to think your way around the course. Course was actually in good condition given rains of epic proportions within the last 14 days. Probably would play better once you know the nuances of the course ie; play this course with someone who knows it the first time you play here.
Fairway Hills GC
Course was a great track to play. Challenging, yet fun. I hit some really good shots that were rewarded with boogies. Weather was superb. Staff were very friendly and the starter was particularily helpful with advise about the course.
Great course, but lacks creature comforts
The course is always in great shape, but the check-in counter/ snack shack is lacking. The older staff working the counter isn't very friendly. The course, however, is always in great condition.
Fathers Day Treat, but a few surprises...
Nice course. Tighter than normal fairways but not too tight. Yardage markers are far too sparse. Beware of the blind shots - a few hidden and heavy patches of rough that ate otherwise well placed shots. Suprising little band of grass 150 yds from green at the crest of the hill on #18 is a good example - useless gimmick rather than a fair challenge. Starter was as helpful as possible but detailed knowledge will help next time.
Biggest real problem was the lack of any water, or concession cart selling fluids. We went through all the water and Gatorade we brought. Fully expected water on the course - all containers were empty. Didn't see a Marshall the entire day. Most notable lack of water was the split at 13/16 to add credence to this accounting. Kinda reckless on part of management.
I'd still play it again.
A must-play in Columbia MD
I have played Fairway Hills many times, however, this was the 1st time in 2016. The course was in terrific shape. The recent rain and cool temperatures haven't hurt, but still I found the course better than I anticipated. The fairways (Bermuda) were lush and the rough thick (see weather above) but playable. The greens were outstanding, some of the best I've played on a public course. True rolling, holding approach shoots and challengingly quick, but fair. The only consistent problem I encounter at Fairway Hills is that there is inevitably a slow group or 2 which gums the pace of play. Today, for example, my partner had to leave after 9 holes and I went to the back as a single. I quickly played through a couple of 3-somes, but then things came to a screeching halt. The problem was a mixed 3-some that had no business being on a full-length golf course. Back and forth across the green with no clue that people were behind them, stacking up on the par-3. And, wait for it, there were FIVE HOLES open in front of them. I know that because I jumped ahead of them on #13 and didn't see another golfer the rest of the way in. Didn't see a ranger either, which contributes to the persistent slow-play. One final comment about the clubhouse staff friendliness, there was none. Take away the slow-play which plagues Fairway Hills (most important), and at least give the customers the impression they are welcome, and the course is a 12 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best.
Good Value Interesting Layout
If you pay $40 or less it is a very good value. I would only pay $50 at most for this course. however, it is a good layout, interesting holes which forces you to manage certain holes. the course is generally short but narrow. so if your teeing off from the back tees, you better hit them straight. I generally have no complaints for this course. Staff mix review. Some are extremely nice and some are not so nice. maybe snobby is the right word. recommend? absolutely but for right price
Nice for the price
This course was excellent for the associated costs involved. I will definatly schedule to play again.
More difficult than you think
Don't be fooled by the length of this course. It's target golf and there are some long forced carries and lots of places to loose your golf ball. The entire front nine goes along the Little Patuxent River (which is more like a large stream) and is very low. It was cart path only and the fairways were very wet due to all the recent rain. The fairways were only in fair condition but the greens were good. They have quite a bit of slope which makes them surprisingly fast if you get on the wrong side of the hole. All in all fun to play (especially with a Golf Now deal time).
Decent Course

A local favorite
I just really like this course. Just started playing recently. I just got back into the game after a long break. I've played 5 local courses in 3 weeks but played this 4 times in one week. Lots of hazards, water, lay ups. 10 is great. 17 also. The staff is nice and helpful. All the guys around are great. They do alot with the first tee program. I'm a GN loyalist, with my frequency of play I need a hot deal.
I play fast. Solo. Rain or shine. I will continue to play this at least 1-3 times a week. I'm sure it will get better with the weather. Please treat this place with respect.
