When to open and when to close
Timbers of Troy is a great course but in order to preserve it, why open it in weather conditions whereby the course is unplayable. Because I used Golf Now to book my round on Saturday (Hot Deal) I could not cancel. Hey, I'm fine with that but what ticked me off was having to play in constant rain with standing water on the course. I understand that closing courses due to weather is undesirable and it's a financial hit but beating up the course (which it was clearly taking) cost money as well to repair. I'll revisit Timbers in the future but they should take note as to what Montgomery county did that same day .... They closed most if not all of their courses.
LOVE this course.
I've played the timbers a number of times since it opened 20 years ago. It's possibly in the best condition that it's ever been in right now. I've never had anything other than positive interactions with the staff, good food for lunch, and a reasonable pace of play for a difficult golf course.
If you live in Howard County and are looking for a challenging round of golf and a fantastic experience, the Timbers is the best public course option around.
Much improved
I have played this course for many years. My biggest complaint was the bunkers. They have done a fantastic job of renovating all bunkers. The course is in great shape. Always been challenging & even more with improvement to bunkers.
Great layout, good price
I have to say, after playing waverly woods and fairway hills this weekend, I'm always glad to be back at the timbers. It's been since summer that I played here due to the renovations, but after playing those other courses and getting treated like a second class citizen, I miss TAT.
Good course, friendly staff, and I'm really looking forward to your renovations. Kevin, Bincks, Doe, and Cory are great. Keep it up.
Ground under repair
Hard to rate the course since 9 holes were undergoing renovation. But the open 9 lacked sand in the hazards. Greens were marred with ball marks. Perhaps they should give out divot tools . Hopefully after the renovations it will be better.
9x2
The front 9 is under repair so they offer 2 rounds on the back which I knew according to golf now. The 9 holes were in very good condition and the pace was good considering only 9 holes. This course is always good but could step it up a notch with faster greens. They seem to roll slow for this quality of course. Amenities are great. The practice green is huge and fast- that is how all the greens should be. I recommend this course, can't wait to see the front after repairs are done.
Good pace of play
Check in was friendly and quick. What more do you need? Fairways were all very good, as were most greens. The bunkers were poor to say the least. Little sand. Lots of standing water and leaves. I know we had rain days earlier, but I have played elsewhere since and didn't see any bunker issues. The pace of play was very good compared to other courses (yes, I'm talking about you; Waverly Woods). Overall all a good round. But if you paid rack rate, as opposed to using Golf Now, it would have been considered too expensive for the conditions.
Thanks for your feedback, Roger. There's no doubt the bunkers need work. So you'll be happy to know that full bunker and irrigation renovations have begun! As such we will be a 9 hole course throughout the winter of 2016, but we will begin the 2017 season with all new bunkers!!
An Indian Summer in October
This was my first time playing Timbers at Troy. It has been on my list to play as I live not too far away near Annapolis. It is a good course with a few blind shots and well kept fairways. The course is in pretty good shape for it being almost mid-October. The staff was very nice and even said that they were going to be making many repairs in the winter to the course. These repairs included the awful fairways that come in to play on most holes. My only gripe about this course was that it was $52 to play on a Monday, and the guy at the pro-shop said that they would be switching to their
"fall rates" pretty soon. Is October no longer a fall month? For as much as we play golf and this guy still holding on to the summer rates, Ill think twice about Timbers at Troy.
The starter was a phenomenal person to talk to by the way. One of the best starters i have ever talked to. Very funny yet informative on the course. Wish I would've gotten his name.
Thank you for your kind comment and recommendation! Just to clarify, the day you played was a holiday but we remained at weekday rates (a 25% discount) as a courtesy to our patrons.
Most courses adjust their rates seasonally but will change earlier or later depending on conditions and weather. In our case the upcoming renovations were initially believed to be occurring the first week of October but were pushed back at the last minute. They could start as soon as next week so we plan to change our rates when the contractors let us know which holes will be open.
Thank you again and see you soon!
Great Hot Deal
Considering all the recent extremely hot temps the course was in fair condition. I've seen worse conditions at other courses recently. We were amazed at the excellent Hot Deal offer we got. All things considered we enjoyed a nice afternoon of golf.
Thank you for coming out! We're glad you enjoyed your visit and we look forward to seeing you again.
Poor Shape
Course has a great layout . Sand traps are a mess and fairways in below average shape.
Thanks for your feedback. We agree about the bunkers which is why we're renovating them completely in the coming weeks. The fairways were recently aerified but have healed nicely since then. We hope to see you again soon.
A course that charges so much more than they deliver!
I really want this course to be good because it's so close to where I live and parts of it are but the parts that aren't, like the bunkers, are just a let down! The greens were actually rolling well even though some of the ones in the trees had quite a few bare spots! 20% of the bunkers were playable and the rest required a free drop out of them for fairness! Quite a few bare spots in the fairways and around the greens which I can cut some slack because of the weather this year but to still ask over $50 to play a course like that is just crazy!!
Nice course
Course was in good shape other than the fairway bunkers. There was only one tee box that was in really bad shape (par 3 on the back). Other than that beautiful course. The greens were in outstanding shape, ran true, fairly quick and held well struck iron shots.
IAs far as pace of play Iwas out by myself (Monday) and everyone (about 4 groups) let me play through so I was able to enjoy my round. Would definitely play again, just not the daily rate (~$60)
Better than expectations
Played this course a day after heavy rains and course was surprisingly in good shape with exception of the fairway and greenside bunkers which need to be completely reworked.
Fairways and greens were in excellent shape, tee boxes a little tore up. Played from the whites which is only 5800 yds, but this course always plays more difficult than its length might indicate.
Overall would play course again, but not on daily fee schedule, where better value can be found elsewhere. Thanks golfnow for the 24.00 hot deal!
Horrible experience!
Horrible round today due to extremely rude ranger who didn't do his job keep up pace of play. He intentionally put a twosome behind a foursome, then all but refused to hurry up the foursome or suggest to them to let the twosome play through. We called the clubhouse twice after multiple times seeing this foursome on the tee box while the entire hole in front of them was empty. This particular foursome was taking on average of 5-10 minutes per green as well.
Course was in pretty good shape, but the experience with this ranger and pace of play ensures I will never be back.
BTW-the price was lowered to $60, which is about $20 overpriced for the quality of layout and upkeep.
Great Rate, Great Course
Timbers at Troy Golf Course is well maintained and is in very good condition. I used GolfNow to book the tee time for $29. Great price and I highly recommend golfers of all abilities play Timbers at Troy Golf Course and to use GolfNow "Hot Deals" to book the tee time.
Rude Pro Shop Employee
I really don't have anything bad to say about the course itself but.... I played early Wednesday and when I checked in, JJ in the pro shop was abrasive, unapproachable, and just unfriendly. If I'm paying over $50 for golf, it would just be nice if the guy at the desk was at least nice. The starter and snack bar employees were friendly, though.
I'm the employee in question and I'm shocked and confused by this review. In my 20 years in the business I've never had a complaint like this that wasn't easily explained by some miscommunication or misunderstanding, and I honestly do not recall any interaction that matches what's described here. Our Shop staff routinely scores 10/10 in daily customer service surveys and on the day in question I'm positive we were having a good time and in good spirits. If you would like to discuss your experience we would be happy to take your call and address your concerns. Thank you.
The Fairways and greens
Greens were great fairways were in good condition enjoyable day of golf .
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Thank you for your comment and for coming out even in bad weather. If you booked a "hot deal" through Golfnow you should've been able to ask Golfnow for a credit or raincheck. Several inches of heavy rain fell that night so some wash out was likely. Thanks.
