Great Layout But Conditions Were Lacking
Timbers at Troy has many things going for it but it also has some things not going for it. I will start off with the good. The layout I thought was great, wasn't too difficult but wasn't easy. Some short holes but they were very well protected by bunkers and ob. The fairways were decent, way better than prior reviews have stated. The tees were fine, nothing spectacular, they felt a bit "spongy" to me but it rained the previous day so that was probably why. They did seem to be cut a bit too high in my opinion. The greens I thought were decent for a public course. Now for the bad, as you probably guessed from the prior reviews the bunkers were lacking in spots. I wasn't in very many luckily but from what I could see they weren't good at all. They were very, very natural looking with stones and rocks everywhere. One of the bunkers I ended up in had algae growing in it from the standing water that was there so drainage in the bunkers wasn't very good. There was one bunker on one of the holes (I think it was 11's right green side bunker) that had the sand replaced with white sand which really created better contrast and visual appeal than the brown-red and that are in the other bunkers. Lastly the course is way too expensive for what you get. I got a hot deal on golf now for $26 dollars I think so it was worth it for me. But if you don't go through golfnow they are asking for around $60 on weekends which this course is for sure not worth it. If you're going to spend $60 on a round of golf there are a lot nicer courses in the area in which you can play. If they could fix the bunkers this course would be worth the price but as it stands today, no way.
Never in good shape
This course is always bad shape
Though we disagree with your assessment we understand how you could've come to that conclusion based on your date of play. You would have played a few weeks after aerification which would affect your impression. We do offer discounts when we aerify in the Spring and/or Fall. We also strive to inform all golfers of these conditions/discounts for a few weeks afterward, though online bookings may only carry a small notice posted by Golfnow that is easy to miss. Hopefully your next experience will be much better!
Unacceptable maintenance
Played this course a nimber of times and for as long as I can remember the fairway bunkers are just dirt and weeds, no sand. A couple of the fairways are in rough shape. Greens were ok.
We apologize for the condition of some of the bunkers. Not all are bad but it is a significant project that is in the works. We hope to see you again in the near future.
Varying holes
Very nice layout with interesting holes. The greens were aerated with lots of holes, most filled with sand. It would have been nice to know the greens were aerated before we played. The weather was cold in the 40s with 15-20 mph winds. I will play this again when it is warmer and the greens are healed. There are a few holes where course knowledge will be helpful in where to play the ball.
Overpriced
I live 5 minutes away, but I've played only a couple of times in the last 5 years.
Drastically over priced
Nice people good lay out. Course has been in poor condition for some time. Maintenance is non existent. Not worth the money.
One of the best tracks in the area
If you are looking for a course to play that will challenge every aspect of your game with risk and reward opportunities this is the place to play.
If you make a birdie which is very possible on the true rolling greens or a double bogey from losing a drive in the woods or environmental areas the beauty of the course will remind you that the setting of this golf course makes it all worth while.
Inflexible course employees
No matter what the rules are regarding gf now teetimes, the golf course employees should cooperate with the golfers and should look out for their well being.
As we discussed the day of play there was no way to give you a raincheck or refund for a "hot deal" round you purchased through golfnow as we did not collect any money from you. Golfnow receives 100% of that payment. The course was open for play and the policy of golfnow at the time was that they would not refund the money they collect if the course is open, which we were. They have since altered their policy, rightly so. It was not our decision but regardless we apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you.
Course OK but staff needs some manners.
The course was not in the best condition but it was an OK course to play. The bunkers were in need of some sand. The greens were just aerated, so they took off an extra $10. The staff were really friendly when we checked in. After our round we went in to have something to eat and watch some golf on TV. But now there was a new guy working in the pro shop and he sat in the cafeteria and watched tennis. We asked if we could watch the third round of the Deutsche Bank instead, but he would have nothing of that. " This is the Grand slam for Serena" he said staring at the TV!!!! We didn't say anything, ate our burgers and left. Later we found it was only the quarter finals not the finals!! The lady working in cafeteria on the other hand was really nice and helpful.
Friendly staff
The staff are very friendly and the course even with aerated greens was in good condition. Some bunkers need sand, overall a great location.
Course condition
The overall course was very dismal. ALL the bunkers were full of water and none were raked at all. The greens were aerated (I know this has to be done) but there was too much sand on the greens. Too much sand caused three or four pins not being able to stay in the cups. I played this course 3 years ago and it was beautiful.
Plan on a looong round on a Saturday
Tee'd off on time at 10:12am. It took 5h 10m to complete a round. Spoke with the Pro after the round and was informed that it does that that long when a lot of people are playing. Taking this long is evidently acceptable to the course staff because nothing was done to speed up play and I was told they expect it to take that long.
I enjoy the course and will consider playing during the week but never again on a weekend.
Must have been amazing back in the day....
The bones of this course are mightily evident, however the lack of upkeep makes for a less than ideal playing experience. The bunkers are often bare and or rocky. The greens have great undulations but are pock marked and hairy. Each hole is visually interesting with various challenges being thrown at the golfer. It must have truly been a pure golfing experience when it first opened.
Not what it used to be
This course used to be in a lot better condition. Now the conditions are very poor and its way over priced for that reason. Don't waste your time and money.
Need Sand in the Bunkers
Overall was a good round. Would have been much better if the traps actually had sand in them instead of rocks. They really need to invest in making all their sand traps better.
Stay Away
The course looks nice from the road and that is where it ends. The tees are in terrible condition, they have crab grass growing on all of the tees. It doesn't matter whether it is front, middle, or back they are less then favorable. Some of the sand traps have crab grass in them as well. If they do not have grass growing in them they have a problems with the drainage system and have water in them. They seem to be fairly close to losing some greens as well. This is all for the amazing fee of $52 dollars. You would think that they would make an adjustment based on all of this.
Mid week morning tee time
Course was average. Summer temps cause most East courses to be in fair condition.
3 hours 20 minutes to play 9 holes
I think the title speaks for itself. 3 hours and 20 minutes to play 9 holes. What makes this even more ridiculous is that there was hardly anyone on the course! An early morning storm scared away many players and the parking lot was quite empty when we arrived. What caused the delay was 4 groups of players. These guys were the SLOWEST players EVER. If the course had competent marshalls this problem would have been resolved quite easily but even after repeated calls to the clubhouse and flagging down marshalls, they did NOTHING. I did not have the time for a 6 hour 45 minutes round, so i left after 9. WORST. ROUND. EVER. The proshop gave a partial refund but they didn't even apologize. PATHETIC.
6-24
The staff was very friendly, the course looks nice until you start playing it. The greens play very fast which is ok if the greens were maintained. The greens and fairways all looked like no one has ever repair divids until the season is over, the sand traps are not playable at all and it is definitely over priced for the conditions of the course
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Thank you for your review. We are sorry you were not entirely pleased with the conditions and pricing. Prior to the execution of our next long-term management lease we are expecting extensive work to the bunkers, cart paths, and irrigation systems but a start date is yet to be determined. We are also killing off invasive grasses so that even better turf may grow in. This may at times require watering to soak in the sprayed solution, or produce what look like dead spots though they are temporary. Hot temperatures may require mid-day watering, but the course drains well enough that we are usually 90 degrees off the cart path.
Our prices have stayed the same for several years despite rising costs. We offer military and senior discounts on weekday mornings, in-season. The best value is our Players Club which affords you Twilight rates all day M-Th and after 12pm on Weekends and holidays, in-season. Members also get a free round of golf which can pay for the cost of the membership by itself. Rates and further membership information can be found at timbersgolf.com . We hope to see you again soon.
