Not a good value
Front nine was playing off "hardpan" very little grass, could not take a divot. Plan on the ball rolling off the green even if you hit in front of it. Very hard, couldn't land on greens and stay, always rolled off, 10-15 yards
Back nine was a little better, grass in fairways, greens the same. Pace of play was very slow, no rangers on course to help
Mid Winter Break!
Great day, high 60's and for February, a dream come true! Course is in great condition and in spite of dormant grass on the greens, challenging as usual. So lucky to have the warm temps after having the winter doldrums for a couple of months. Great municipal course and well maintained, even this time of year. Worth it to play, anytime.
Good Maintenance, Super Generic Course
If all you're interested in is a nice round of golf on a course that is maintained well, then this is the place for you. It's in excellent shape, and the price is reasonable. But if you're hoping for a little more than that, look elsewhere. I'm not sure I've ever played a less memorable golf course. There's nothing wrong with it, per se, but that might be the issue. It goes out of the way not to offend, to its detriment. The setting is pleasant, but the golf is too easy. I shot an 81 here from the back tees hacking it around the entire day, and the only reason I didn't break 80 was because I decided to try a really, really stupid recovery shot and ended up with a triple bogey. And I only did that because I was bored. If you're looking for a public golf course in Frederick specifically, then yes, obviously this is the best choice. My personal advice? Drive 20 minutes down I-70 to Black Rock. It's less expensive, maintenance is just as good, and the course is just as enjoyable and beginner-friendly, while being more interesting.
Great Afternoon!
We played during the Christmas Holiday break. The weather was in the mid-40's with very little wind which made for a great day. The course was in fantastic condition for December. We played in 3:55. The afternoon couldn't have been better!
Nice November round
The course was in really good shape for the second week of November, and made for a great day. Played seven holes before running into a slowdown with groups ahead, and even so finished in less than 3 hours 30 minutes.
Perfect Day!
The staff was very friendly! Course is not overly challenging and in great shape! If not for the hour drive, it would be my home course!
Happy return to the course after 20 years away
This course "fits my eye". For some reason, the layout (particularly from the senior tees, but on the others as well) invites carefully planned shot, but the planning doesn't involve clairvoyance. There are a number of risk/reward decisions to make, but if you know your game you can figure it out.
The greens are very true, and aren't as tricked up as some of the courses in the DC-Baltimore-Frederick areas. They've been in fabulous condition, as has the entire course.
The fairways are sufficiently wide that you don't feel that you need to play target golf, but not so wide that you can just flail away. The rough has two cuts to it, with the first cut being long enough to slow down a roll, but not so deep as the require a superhuman shot to get out. A ball there is easily located and will be sitting up enough so that half the ball (or so) sits above the level of the grass. The second cut is longer - maybe 1-1/2 to 2 inches deep. It's thick, but not the absolute kiss of death. Nearby Little Bennett golf course in Montgomery County has rough that in contrast seems like it's prepped for the US Open.
I went there as a single and was teamed up with some fabulous companions. I played pretty well, largely due to the friendly and encouraging attitude shown by my playing partners.
As a bonus, the grill is managed by Brewer's Alley. I haven't yet tried the food, but they have a fabulous collection of local craft brews available.
Great Muni Course
I have played most of the Frederick, MD courses and this one ranks right up there with the others. Obviously not the challenge of Whiskey Creek or Worthington Manor, but Clustered Spires is a solid challenge with multiple ways of playing the course. I will play it many more times. Great experience.
great course
Proably the best conditions in the Baltimore metro area. Very large greens and good roll conditions. Fairways very lush. Like hitting off carpet. Hitting fairways is very critical on this course. The ruff is very punishing. Will play this course again and again.
Beautiful greens
I found an incredible deal at a course that was in superb shape. I only wish my game was in as good of shape as the course.
Always good
I play all over. Some of the so called "better courses" are struggling to keep their fairways green this summer. I don't know how Clustered Spires does it but the fairways are always top notch. I love this course! The greens were in excellent condition as well. I had no complaints.
Very pleasant round
This course is great for intermediate or social golfers. The pace was steady, the hazards are minimal (there is some water), not too much change in elevation. Very walkable if you like that challange.
The greens were freshly aerated, so that is way I only gave 3 stars for the value. Overall, a very pleasant day to get out of the city and enjoy a relaxing round of golf.
Clustered Spires
The course was in great shape for late August (some of the other courses in the area have suffered from the heat).
Great value and fun walkable course
For the money it is a winner. Good condition and receptive greens. Walked 18 in 3 and a half hours. Price was right and staff very friendly. Looking forward to playing again.
Local Jewel
There are several course in or near Frederick County, Md but this one is a can't go wrong choice. The course is well cared for and challenging. The greens are fast and the rough is rough.
Good layout
The staff is great & the course has been in very good condition both times I have played here!
