Superb conditions and good value but slow play
We played this on a weekday and the course conditions were superb in both the fairways and greens. Course is not difficult but some holes were challenging. Play was slow but group in front of us played from the TIPS which was beyond their skill level and no rangers to move them along.
Good challenging course.
We found the course a pleasure to play. It's wide open with some tough holes to play. Will go back again.
Great All Around
We played a late tee tine on Saturday afternoon and scooted around the course in no time. We challenged ourselves and played from the tips, which made our 2nd shots pretty critical. Not having played the course probably made it the most challenging for yardages and landing spots on greens. The greens were a little bumpy and on the slower side but we attributed this to late in the day and aeration a few weeks ago. The rough can be challenging all around. We were very pleased with the course and will definitely travel 1.5 hours back there again to play!! The view on #16 is like no other. Late in the day and into the wind, 3 wood barely got to the front.
Good value
Clustered Spires is one of our favorite courses. The holes have lots of variety, good mix of hazards and tough rough if you leave the generous fairways. Deer and other wildlife are often your playing companions. Women tees provide a healthy head start for shorter hitters.
Staff, clubhouse and grille all top-notch.
Excellent course
Clustered Spires continues to be an excellent value. I play golf all over the state of Maryland and for the price this course is hard to beat. Lots of pride shows through with the condition this course is always in.
Great Deal
I love Clustered. I play there about every other week. If you book on golf now, it is always worth it.
Summary
After a long, hot summer the greens played great. Not too hard but played fairly fast and allowed you to putt through the breaks. Sand was inconsistent from the few unfortunate times I found myself there. Sometimes matted down and sometimes too fluffy. Rate of play was unusually slow for 12:30 on a Friday. It was the best day of the year so I can't complain. For my favorite course in the area I was very pleased with the condition.
Always in great condition
This course always is in great shape. The greens are plush. Great value. I make the travel from Baltimore to Frederick almost 3-4 times a month to play here.
Get it Cheap and It's Not Bad
Played this course all the time growing up. Now some 10+ years later it was interesting to go back and see what's changed. The mature trees now make accuracy a bit more important, but most holes give room to miss. Greens still don't break as much as they look. They added some higher grass near some of the holes to catch strays.
Overall while there's still nothing special about the layout, and it's in decent shape, with lots of divots in the fairways, and not enough sand in the sand traps. We got around as a 2 some in just over 3 hours, but I've played some long ones here when it's busy.
If you can get the hot deal price, or a decent discount, give it a whirl - it's not worth full freight.
great features....
Course was in very good shape. Greens were rolling very true. Only negative was cartpath only. Otherwise great outing.
A Pleasant Course
This a pleasant course where you won't lose many golf balls. My wife, a beginner, liked it a lot for that reason. I'm a 4 handicap, and I found it pretty easy, even from the tips, although there are three or four challenging holes, including a 237-yard par 3 and a 491 yard par 4. If there was more trouble nearer the fairways, it would be decent tournament course, but you can get away with a lot of bad swings. The conditions were nice and the course is attractive. Pace of play for a Sunday afternoon was good.
Great pace of play because it was 100+ degrees!
Clustered Spires has always been one of my favorite courses. If I lived closer, I would play it more often. The value on Golfnow was well worth it. We played in about 3 hours 10 minutes only because it was 100+ degrees and we were two of only a few fools playing in the heat! Course is in great shape especially considering the weather.
nice course not long but still a challenge.
clustered spires is a city owned course in Frederick MD. from the whites its not long but a challenge. it has a variety of different holes. not a lot of elevation change. definitely fun to play. good price if you go through golf now.
The course is fair and the marshals try to keep things moving
For the money, you won't find a better course to play in Frederick. Its a county course, but is very well maintained, easy to get in and out of, and has pretty good food...I highly recommend the experience
Wow! Great value and quality
It had been many years since I had played Clustered since joining a club and routinely playing some of the other more talked about daily fee courses in the area. None of the other local courses can match the value....attentive and courteous staff, course attendants that you actually see managing play, a great pace of play, and the conditions were as good as it gets. Well done Clustered. I will definitely return.
This coarse is a great value!
Great coarse, easy access, the rough is thick and hard to find your ball just a foot off the fairway. Always a great place to play! The staff are excellent people to deal with.
Nicw course
For a city owned course, this place rivals some of the higher dollar courses in the local area. Well groomed, well maintained, played very nice.
Well maintained
Great course very clean and maintained. Only issue is they were pairing a lot of twosomes and creating foursomes with strangers. Also eventhough the Marshall was driving around he didnt help with pace of play issues, probably caused by pairing people who don't know each other.
Absolutely beautiful!
The course was beautiful, greens in great shape, pace of play just right. The only complaint would be the rough was a bit tall. Lost some balls (well, the mowers will find them) in what should have been findable conditions. But that was the only negative. Staff very friendly. All-in-all, the most pleasant 18 holes of golf I have played in some time.
Well maintained, short, confidence building course.
Wide open and short, Clustered Spires makes for a fun round of golf without the aggravation of constantly looking for balls in the rough. Reachable par 5's, short par 4's, and reasonable par 3's - the back is quite a bit more difficult than the front which is fine as neither are unreasonable. Greens were putting true and not so fast as to make them impossible.
