Clusters
Family friendly course but don't get off the fairway. You will add shots to your score.
Sunny day
I have played here a couple of times and the course is always in excellent shape. It is my favorite course in the area. Greens are a good speed and it is overall a very comfortable round.
Excellent layout
Played here 4X. All rounds were exceptional. Course is always in perfect condition w/ natural barriers. Most holes are long w/ well manicured grounds & traps. Only problem was the 1st cut of grass. Lost a half dozen golf balls in plain sight due to length of grass. Since course was busy, didn't have long to look for them. Great value, except for the cost of lost balls.
Fat N Juicy
Our trip to CS in Fredrick was great Especially with our GolfNow discount which made it perfect. The course was great , greens perfect. But we wondered why the starter warned of Fat N Juicy rough well we soon found out. The rough was so thick that had we not had to spend so much time looking for balls that were hit just off the fairway never to be seen again was very disheartening. Great course. Very playable but u must keep it in the short grass. Bring plenty of balls.
Considering the weather
Heavy rain over night didn't totally mess this course up... Ruff high due to US OPEN qualifier later in the week.... Still over all not that bad considering was cart path only... Played 18 in under 4 hrs.
Thick rough, cart path only
The course itself was good, but there were two things that could have been better. It was cart path only, even though the course was not wet and the rough was very thick. You often had trouble finding your ball even though you were only a few yards off the fairway. It was also very difficult to hit from.
We were told the reason for the cart path only rule was an upcoming qualifier. It would be nice to visualize things like that as it can affect your selection of courses to play.
Otherwise a very good day on a a nice course.
Pleasant Experience on a Beautiful Day
Wide fairways with a couple of tricky hazards. The fairways were pretty well maintained, but the rough was a little too rough. We lost a couple of balls because the rough was too long and thick. All in all a nice experience and I plan to go back again.
Open but Chalenging
With all the rain the rough was thick and hard to find your ball but the upside the course was in good shape even though the river crested a few days before and covered several holes. Greens were a little bumpy but were consistent.
Very Nice Course - Challenging from roughs
Considering all the rain, the course was in very good shape (a couple of holes had temporary tee locations). It's a challenging course if you can't stay on the fairways as the roughs are very deep and difficult. The greens were true and also in pretty good shape. All in all, the weather was great and our foursome had a very good time. Also, we got one of the Golfnow "hot deals" so the price was excellent!!
Perfect Day
This is likely one of the best public courses around. Course is superbly maintained, staff is friendly and accommodating, and the pace of play - even on the weekend - is not unreasonable.
"While we're young!"
Great course for the average golfer, shorter course, quick greens, great condition.
This is the second time I've played this course (once last season) and both times I've had pace of play issues. Both times the course just seems to be overbooked and I've found my group waiting for a few minutes to take each shot. I can see this course being great to play when off-peak, but on a nice day, this backs up more than the average course- bring a Snickers.
One of my favorites
I have played Spires more than any other course for two reasons;
1) it is 10 minutes from my house.
2) it is a superb course for both the challenges it presents and the value for the price paid. (ok, that's 3)
other attributes include a great staff, adequate training/practice facilities, accessibility; I have never had a long wait to get a tee time or go out as a single.
I have played countless rounds with people that have driven for hours to play this course, citing that they made the journey for many of the reasons I've stated. I have never spoken to anyone that has had an ill word about the course. in all, Highly recommended.
A very enjoyable course of moderate difficulty.
The course is in a very nice setting in Frederick County just north of Frederick. It is actually owned by the City government. I have played here many times before. The course was and is always in great shape and the staff is very friendly. The sand traps were a bit sloshy, but that is to be expected this time of year in this area of the country. The course is fairly wide open, but there many holes that present their own level of challenge. The low handicapper might not find it challenging enough, but the rest of the golfers will enjoy the setting and each hole's unique layout.
nice greens
overall good condition, greens were the best of any public course i've played this year.
too bad they don't Marshall this course
Fun and fair layout. Pace of play on weds afternoon in November was almost 5 hours. Hate to be there in season. Fix pace of play and I will come back.
Liked the greens
Staff was better than cordial, but would have appreciated some awareness or supervision of pace of play. A couple of groups ahead of us spent quite a bit of time looking for lost balls.
Rangers need to keep the golfers moving at a better pace. Too many 15 minute waits to tee off
If it weren't for the slow pace, the course would be rated better
Very good nearby course.
Clustered Spires is nicely designed and maintained and is also well managed. Given the unlimited water supply, the course is always green and in good condition. As an added bonus, it is a great walking course.
Great Value
Course was in good shape, Pace of play was slow but we played behind a corporate outing!!
Fun, well maintained but always slow.
The course is generally maintained well besides a few spots here and there. They usually do not run on time, always causes a back up and the pace of play slows significantly. Fairly easy course, flat and wide open. Do play here a lot due to a good value and close to my home.
