The course is suitable for them, not for golf right now Photo submitted by DrOldSchool on 05/06/2018
9/10
Only complaint was pace of play for first nine, partly because we were a twosome and partly because foursome in front of us actually was slow. It appeared that they got told to pick up the pace and then one dropped out after nine, so no problem then.
Greens and bunkers need work
I enjoyed the back nine, but the front nine has a few holes in which you are driving blind and there are no bells or anything to let the next group know you are out of range. The greens and bunkers needed some work.
Nice for the price
Starts with par 5 on front and back. Not a lot of trouble to hit over and some nice elevated tee shots. Don't think the course is walkable. Food in clubhouse is decent but I'd suggest ordering before the turn. Nice beer selection, too.
staff very friendly
The staff was great the clubhouse was very nice. The ranger was making sure that everyone was keeping pace. It was my fastest round in a long time of a Sat. Morning
Greens Need Help
We played in the afternoon in gorgeous, low humidity August weather so the day was enjoyable overall. That said, the greens at Challedon need some work. I was told when we checked in that the greens on #1 and #2 had been aerated due to "some problems" and that they were lowering the greens fee by $2 in recognition of this. What we found, however, was that most of the greens were suffering from some sort of blight and had lots of bare spots as well as bumps and holes. In addition, it would appear very few players actually repair their ball marks and that added to the poor green conditions. Bunker conditions were quite variable also with a few showing washouts and others being dug up as part of repair. We'll be playing Challedon again in 3 days in a charity tournament so I guess we'll just have to remember the purpose and live with the conditions.
Overall, in ok shape... Greens in trouble
Overall an ok course. Bunkers and greens are awful but they're working on both. As for the greens, didn't help that some local wingnut decided to go 4-wheeling on a number of the greens.. But that's the least of the ground crew's problems - between 4-wheeler, aeration, and some sort of fungus... Well the greens are in big trouble for late July... Upside, it's better that Rattlewood.
Waste of a Day
I want to start by noting that I am not a person to complain for no reason. But, having played Challedon more than a few times (just not recently), and being some what prepared for what might await me, I must report that what I experienced was worse than I imagined.
I will start by saying that the course layout itself is excellent. It could be a great course. Unfortunately, it is adversely impacted by two undeniable factors: (1) it has the worst greens of any course of any quality that I have ever seen in mid-summer. Period. (2) Course management simply accepts that 5+ hour rounds of golf are acceptable and to be expected. This is ridiculous.
The attached picture tells the tale on the greens. Some of the greens were actually worse, owing to some local delinquent driving an ATV on about six of the greens. That person should be tracked down, arrested, and prosecuted. But, that is not the reason the greens look diseased and are bumpy and slow.
As bad as the greens are, the acceptance of hideously slow play is worse. My partner and I got through the first two holes in good time, but we started to hit traffic on #3. By the time we got to the #4 tee box, we were the FIFTH group either on the short par 4 green, fairway, or tee box or waiting to be on the tee. YES, FIFTH. Are you kidding me? The root of the problem was an "unofficial group event" consisting of 8 groups playing at glacial pace.
I want to point out that Rob the Starter and Rachel the Food and Beverage Manager were both super. In fact, Rachel arranged for us to receive vouchers to come back and play. However, it is going to take awhile for me to summon the courage to take on Challedon again.
It is a mystery to me why a course with that kind of layout built within a community of mammoth homes cannot generate enough revenue to have acceptable conditions. But, I am thinking it is the attitude of the golf management, including one diminutive fellow who got a little yappy with my partner over our views on pace of play.
In a word...horrific. Absolutely horrific.
Off to the Races
We have played Challedon numerous times and are thoroughly challenged each time. The pace was good, the food was good and the drink cart game around often enough. The course was in very good shape.
I highly recommend it!!

Poor Conditions/Poor Pace of Play
Very disappointing conditions, with the mild weather and steady rain we have received almost every course is in great shape. Not so Challedon, several green were so poor that they had been recently aerated. Many bunkers under repair, and the tee boxes are all very worn. Pace of play is terrible, nearly 5 hours, and nothing done to speed up the group that was bogging down the whole course.
Father and Son round of golf
Job well done. Wanted a quick round for my teenaged son and I to celebrate his birthday. called the course but nothing was available for the time I needed. I went on the GolfNow app and was able to somehow get the time they said wasn't available. Maybe they used magic?
Good Course, Not Great
This was a good, challenging course for my skill level. It has lots of elevation changes and interesting features. They were doing work on what seemed like the majority of the sand traps, and as a result they were very difficult to play out of. Otherwise the course was great and I will definitely play there again.
Beautiful course
Course well kept and fast green in the afternoon. Love the course and will be playing tournament in August.
They need rangers here!
There is no excuse for it to be a 5 1/2 hour round of golf! Course was in pretty good condition other than a number of the bunkers needed sand. I said yes to the 'would you recommend to a friend' -because it is a decent course, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you had all day to play it!
Poor conditions
I have played Challedon 4-5 times a year over the past few years. The winter has taken its toll on the course which will need considerable maintenance to bring it back to it previous high standards. The traps were severly need of repair; the greens were are not true and poorly maintained. The off the fairway grass is more than 4-5 inches in length making it difficult to hit out of if you are able to find your ball. Ponds are over taken by algae and could be polluted when the weather turns warmer.
Challedon
Fairways always nice. Greens bumpy and not smooth for it being late May. Sand traps were awful and a lot of them were having work done. Good Layout and wasn't busy.
Great value for your money.
I thought the staff was very friendly. The course itself was in very good condition. It offered a good challenge. It was a pleasure to play there. I hope to play there again soon.
I like this course
I've always liked playing here and still do. Just needs some minor work done here and there, but overall, still a nice course.
Nice course. Pace of play seemed slow...
Nice course. Good layout. Got backed up on back 9...could have used a Marshal to push slow groups along. People really need to learn to play "ready golf" and speed up when necessary. If you're hitting shots in the weeds/woods on most holes and spending a lot of time looking for them you need to just a) drop a new ball and continue or b) spend more time on the range to become more accurate!
course was fun
I thought the course provided a diversity of play, some flat and open holes and others more of a mountain type of course. The course was fair, enjoyable. and in pretty good shape. My round was shortly after many inches of rain and yet we were able to have carts on the course.
The afternoon I played the course had tournament start at 4:00. We started our round at 1:50 and barely made it to the 10th hole when the tournament was to start. There was inadequate course management to establish an reasonable speed up play.
Greens/Fairways in good shape. Bunkers need work
The greens roll true and were in great shape. Likewise the fairways were well maintained with minimun divots. Bunkers were full of rocks making it difficult to pay out of bunkers without fear of damaging club.
