"Approach" shot on 13 from middle of "fairway". You have to hit through or around the power poles from 250 out Photo submitted by DrOldSchool on 11/21/2012
Price was right
I got a great deal through GN so really I shouldn't complain too much but I must be honest.
Pros: The course is a very nice layout with a lot of potential. The fairways appeared to be pretty well covered with grass but it's early in the season. The staff was very nice.
Cons: Greens had been spiked and were very long and slow. The bunkering was some of the worst I've ever seen .....very little sand, lots of dirt, grass weeds, etc. I tried to rake one and couldn't break the surface. A couple were full of rocks (what's up with that?). Carts were dirty, the clubhouse is a shed (with apologies to shed owners who might be offended). The cart path on the front nine was nice but the back side was rocks and mud, very bumpy.. Hazards were not staked.
I'd be hard pressed to recommend this course but based on reviews I feel I should give it another shot later in the season, perhaps they just had a bad winter.
Another Nice Day
I have always enjoyed playing at Maple Run. If you are looking for a fancy 5 star manicured gem, this ain't it. But if you are looking for a pleasant round with great scenery on a nice layout at a very reasonable price, this is the place. The course is municipal like and the carts are old, bunkers need some sand and the cart paths are rough, but I still like it. The people are friendly and the place seems "homey". You may see a few trout in the sparkling clear Hunting Creek as it winds through the course. And odds are you will be looking in that creek for a number of your shots. Take a ride up to the Catoctin Mountains near Thurmont and try it out.
Golf now information
Course was good except they rarified the greens. Golf now should make us aware of these conditions
Great on weekday specials
This course has gone slightly downhill since the new owners took over. The grounds might be starting to turn around but they are treated this like a must play and charging a crazy price. Until they realize it is a nice course to get out on I would stay away.
Nice course but a bit out of the way
If you are not looking for a fancy clubhouse and brand new golf carts then this is right up your alley. The greens are in very good shape but because it is in the mountains very tough slope. Also everytime I have played here it gets windy which does come in to play. Some of the holes are just ok, while views on other are breath taking. I have played it about 8 times and for the price I will continue to go back over and over.
Smoothest greens in Md
I play a lot of the Md courses and while they might not be the fastest, they are the smoothest greens around. Fun layout that allows you to unload on the driver and tests your wedge game into the greens. A must try value as a hot deal.
maple run is my kind of course
If you want a relaxed and very forgiving course and are not concerned about top of the line ameneties this is a great place to play. A great bargain any day of the week.
Do not expect too much
Let's start with the cons:
- carts are very old (freakish throttle pedal, no rain protection for your clubs, slow motion)
- poor maintenance on some holes fairways
- some holes missing indication plates (sometimes you do not even know which hole you are playing on !!!), missing markers...
- no country club
- no driving range for warming up
That being said, the pros would be :
- inexpensive course
- putting range
- not so difficult to play
- nice sight
So I would recommend this course to people looking for a value golf course to be done once, only interested by playing, but maybe not to players looking for a high feature facility.
One remark to the course owners, this must not be that expensive to repair at least indications on course holes, and would highly increase the rating, what do you think ?
Probably never again
Played here two years ago with my traveling group and we liked the course. This year when we drove up we were reminded of West Virginia because of all the derilect carts and dump trucks sitting in weeds next to the clubhouse.
The lady in the clubhouse was cheerful but didn't know what to charge. I made the tee time on GolfNow but the price she asked for was higher. When I explained to her the difference, she made the change to the lesser price.
The carts were ok , but needed a little scrubbing and TLC. The tees were hard as rocks; the fairways lush; the greens were beautiful! The traps - well, they were mostly - not all - in bad condition. It wasn't from a lack of workers. They had plenty of people on the course cutting grass. All in all , it was an ok experience but we decided on the way back to Westminster that we'd take Maple Run off our to-playlist.
Beautiful golf lay out
One hour away from where I live but a great experience . The grass all aruond Make the game good . Hardy any rough .
Mountain Living
Nice course..4 hour round..pace of play was great..
Definately not what we expected....
We were VERY disappointed with the course. More than one hole had no makers for what hole you were on and no yardages for any of the tee boxes. One hole had only one tee box, just white and no yardage marker at all. I was playing reds with my husband and had to tee up in the middle of the fairway. The bunkers were just dirt and gravel, no sand. The gnats and bees were terrible on the back 9. So bad that we just wanted to finish, I've never felt that way before. The carts were in bad shape, had to keep pulling the choke just to get the cart to move. There were even abandoned carts on the course. There were no trash cans on the course, cigarette butts on the greens and empty beer cans under trees. (Not very scenic!) The only upside was the staff was friendly.
Beautiful course
Maple Run offers challenge for the intermediate player in addition to the scenic view of the mountains .
Could be great....
This course has the potential to be a great one..... The cart paths and signage need updated, the fairways need lots of TLC, and the carts need to be better maintained. Play was slower than I am used to..... On the good side, the fairways were wide, the course was challenging and the greens were well kept. If the course were in better condition, I would play it more often!
Wide Open, Grab the Driver!!
I shot my best round of the season on this course. The fairways are wide open and very forgiving for that occasional slice or pull. Its quiet and you don't have to worry about many distractions. I will say that the nats and wasp can become annoying on the tee boxes or when your trying to putt but overall the course was beautiful and I really enjoyed it. It is also in a nice golf community
Maple Run
Great Value! The staff is excellent and very friendly
Great value
This course is a great value for the money and was worth my drive from Pasadena, MD. The course was in good condition and a little interesting. The pace of play on the Tuesday morning we played was quick. However, I kept stopping to enjoy the beautiful scenery surrounding the course!
Nice course
I had great time playing this course. Great value for your money
Enjoyable Round
This course was in great shape and a great value for the money! The clubhouse was small. The fairways rough and greens where in great shape. Overall a great outing.
Great deal
Course is in great shape, greens are screaming fast!
Only negative is they don't seem to clean their carts. They are fairly new but always dirty.
