Newton Commonwealth Golf Course

Place was very busy for a 7:10 tee time as the parking lot was close to full (always a great sign). Played with high handicappers who were just out to enjoy the game and they were lots of fun. The guy I was partnered with shot at least 140 but it helped us by me scoring 75 from the whites. The grounds crew, superintendent, and staff just killing themselves. Tee to green the course was awesome. I gave them a five star for conditions because for what the weatherman has provided...they are just acing it compared to other courses! Bring your hard hat. The holes are on top of one another (a few tee boxes have netting surrounding them). It's a very hilly course and not always in a fair or interesting way. There are a couple of interesting holes (more-so on the back) and it is typically a good deal. Pace of play was good, but if it wasn't ten minutes from my house, there is no way I'd make a return trip here.

This is a short and tight course that is both unique and challenging. If you play from the blue tees, two of the par three holes will play long to a small green. Play a mid-iron off the tee on most par fours. There are only three holes where a driver or fairway wood should be used. I played because I read this is a Donald Ross course. It must get a lot of play. The course was not in great shape. The one suggestion I have is to make this course walk-only. That will prevent players from damaging the course. I saw many players driving the cart everywhere on the course. I recommend this course for skilled players looking for something near Boston and a bit quirky and interesting.

If your looking for a serious round in peaceful nature, probably best to go somewhere else. However, for what it is, it's a great option.

It's a great fairly easy course that's affordable, in pretty good shape and is fun and easy to walk.

Some of the fairways are "unfair". What I mean is they are so hilly that everything runs to a side. So even if you play a perfect shot, it can run and run and run till it becomes a bad shot. Not much you can do about that short of leveling the fairway, and I don't think they have the budget for that.

Overall it's one of my 'go-to' courses in the area. It's five minutes from my house, cheap, fast, and low stress. I wouldn't travel to come here.

No range, no practice area. But no real room for either of those things.

It’s been many years since I’ve played this Donald Ross course and I don’t remember it ever being in such great condition. The greens were fast and true. Fairways well maintained. Ill be back

This course is very frustrating due to the fact it is built on a hill but overall is is a pretty good municipal course. Many slanted fairways on the back half of the front 9. The back 9 is much flatter and more enjoyable. The course is also very short, less than 5400 yards. There are a good amount of drivable greens and there are 5 par 3s. Conditions are pretty good for a municipal course. I typically walk this course because it is short but it may be a difficult walk for older people due to the hill it is built on. I would say the price is pretty fair for what you get.

Played here at the end of last year and had a cart. Didn't remember how hilly this course is. No carts this time and it's too much of a walk for older people. I made it just fine, but I would never do it again. Fine old Donald Ross course in the heart of Newton. The property value must be nine figures !!! Great, old style, throwback course that's fun to play. Not overly long with plenty of interesting holes and elevation changes. The clubhouse was closed so it's unfair to judge the amenities. 18th hole is a great finishing hole over the long water hazard.
