Great Course
This course is excellent and a great round of golf.
Greens are in great shape and entire course is well maintained.
First time.... not bad.
Played Pierce Lake for the first time today on a hot deal (plus reward). This was a hour and 20 minute drive from my residence. All in all a decent track highlights and lowlights listed below.
Highlights
Tee boxes are in nice condition
Fairways are mature (somewhat long in terms of grass length) and spongy.
Bunkers are nearly perfect in appearance and fill
Greens roll similar to their warm up green, roll true, but play less break then what I was reading most of the time. Definitely not lightning in terms of speed but are large (especially #18).
Layout favors a draw for righties in most cases. If you carry over 260 expect less then driver on some par 4s from gold boxes forward. Some holes are semi-tight with trees / marsh.
No pace of play issues whatsoever
Ample restrooms on course.
Lowlights
Ground under repair near the majority of the cart paths on the back 9 (say 5-6 ft on either side). This was being addressed by their maintenance crew.
Maintenance crew..... I was started on 10 and encountered their crews on every hole expect 18. Not a huge problem but figured I’d mention that.
Damp ground conditions. I strike down, if you do also you’ll understand this lowlight. It’s a wet type course.
If you’re considering playing, for $35 bucks and a 45 minute drive I wouldn’t turn it down.
* Compares close to Pine Knob with better greens if you’d like a reference course....
Challenging, but fair
Fun day on the course even though there was light rain throughout most of the round. Layout is challenging with lots of sand traps, blind shots, doglegs, and wetland areas. But the greens.... undulating with significant level changes, guarded by traps and somewhat sadistic pin placements - YIKES!
layout
I had a great round. The only thing I'd mention that needs attending - and I am sure you are aware of it - is the marker for the 12th tee: we couldn't find it and actually went the wrong way at first. But no big deal: it was a most enjoyable afternoon.
Great value
Played 4-8-21 from non to 4:00.....OK pace, course ib=n very good shape. Work underway replacing cart paths but that did NOT disrupt play. Fairways and greens in good shape...green speed medium. Course staff was working on bunkers and removing grass, etc. around the rims. I drive up from Toledo 1x-2x/month to play and it's well worth it!
Great course
Have played this course at least on e every year. Usually 8-12 of us. Course conditions have always been great. Front fairly open after first hole. Nice elevation changes. Back nine tighter with some elevation change.
Last hole can be a killer depending on pin placement considering the green is very long.
Pierce Lake
This is a challenging well maintained course, one of the best in southeast Michigan.
Just 9 holes
We booked by selecting 18 hole filter.
However, it was just 9 holes as they are under repair.
Stop the presses
My wife and I played. I went in to pay, it was for 9 holes-senior rate as we are both over 65. I asked the attendant how much was 9 vs 18. He informed me that 9 holes riding was $24 and 18 holes riding was $29. At that point I asked if we finish the 9 and decide to play 18 what would the charge be, He stated that it would be an additional $5 per player. When we finished the 9, my wife decided to play another 9. I went in to pay, and I was then told that it would be an additional $13 each. That would have made the entire cost, $37 each, when their rate online for seniors are $29. Told the to shove it.
Course was reduced to just the front 9 available for play due to maintenance on the back nine for the cart paths. This was a non issue for me I decided to play the front twice.
I was able to be matched up with 2 other golfers that actually worked at the golf course as rangers. John and Tom we great ambassadors for Pierce Lake. I had a great time playing the 18 with them both. The course was in great shape and the greens were very challenging. I will definitely try and get back out a few times at the course before the snow flies.
