Rouge Park Golf Course is the city of Detroit's hidden gem. The course has been a local favorite since it first opened in 1923. Despite the expansion of Detroit's golf offerings in later years, Rouge Park G.C. is still considered one of the best and most challenging of them all. The tranquil setting boasts an abundance of wildlife including deer, pheasants, and herons, making you completely forget that you're in the city. The golf course was carved from rolling hills, providing tricky contours and dramatically elevated tees. The Rouge River winds through the layout, coming into play on six holes. The difficulty of the course is balanced by the wide, player-friendly fairways. The par-4 11th is considered one of the Detroit metro area's toughest holes. It requires a 280-yard drive in order to clear not just one but two water hazards.

Challenging old school course

They flipped 9's since I last played here. You now start in the heart of the course; old #10 is now #1 and the par 5 old #1 along Burt Road is now #10.

Greenskeeper put many of the pins within 4' of green edges which added to the challenge.

Most fairways are wide and forgiving and the rough isn't too bad. It was hot and the greens were a tad long and slower than normal. Nonetheless there remain a good half dozen holes to challenge every skill level. You need a great tee shot on1, 6 and 11 to get over the river and on the green in 2. If you take too much of a fade on 7 off the tee you'll drop it in the river. 9 is a blind tee shot to an elevated fairway. B2B par5's to end your round.

We played the first 6 holes in a bit more than an hour, but it took 3 more hours to play the last 13 holes. 4'10" time in all.

Nice little course in Detroit, well maintained, friendly staff. However drink and food prices are abominable.

Bring your long game

Rouge is an established golf with a long history. When I first played it the hardest hole in the State of Michigan was number 2. The back nine is now the front nine. I prefer the traditional layout.

The tee boxes could use a little work but overall it is very playable.

We got senior rates so it was $31 each.

I would recommend this golf course but make sure you have a decent Long game due to the number of forced carry shots

Like getting a sub from Jimmy Johns

Not the fanciest course in Michigan but for what you're paying its great. It's like getting a sub from Jimmy Johns. Nothing flashy - just a solid lunch. Nothing flashy about this course - just a sold afternoon. Hits the spot.

Bad day at a great old track

Fivesomes and 5.5hr rounds on deck at Rouge. Upside is the course looks better than it has in 30 years. The layout is great and has high replay value. Pace o play at 11am on a Monday was absolutely horrendous. 2hrs and 38minutes to turn. Fivesome on the box at 10 was enough to convince me to pull the plug after 9. Pick your spots at this track.
