Bruce Hills Golf Club
About
Bruce Hills Golf Course is located in the north metro Detroit area near Romeo. Mature trees are scattered throughout the course, providing shade and a peacefully secluded feel. The par-70 layout is relatively short at only 5,630 yards form the back tees, making it an ideal round for beginners but it still provides good practice and a quick round for more advanced players. The golf course sprawls across a diverse terrain that allows for downhill and uphill approaches to the small, round greens, which are often sloped from back to front. Keeping the ball below the hole is the key to scoring well on this golf course. Bruce Hills' player-friendly layout only has four bunkers but water comes into play on 12 holes, providing the bulk of the course's challenges.

I didn't expect much...
It's the end of the season. 11/04/2025. The weather was perfect. I had a few PTO hours and figured I would enjoy some early afternoon golf. This place came up on GolfNow for $29 for 18 with cart. I know its hard to complain at that price point...but I am still gonna.
First of all...the guy in the clubhouse was nice. But you can tell they don't get actual golfers there very often. Zero knowledge of golf balls, lingo, even equipment. He had an assortment of clubs from the lost and found that they were getting rid of for $5 each and he called them "chippers" although none of them were chippers. Anyway...you didn't come here for the pro shop review.
Lets start off with the positives: Its pretty remote. The clubhouse and bar seemed very nice and had plenty to offer. And that's about all.
The course is just awful. I was trying to find anything to cling to. I guess the greens were in okay shape.
So I step up to the first tee. Its a 250 yard par 4. The tee box was dirt. I'm not saying it had rough patches...I'm saying I had to dig my feet in like a bunker shot in order to get a stance because it was grass-free loose dirt.
The rest of the course was an absolute disaster. First of all...I don't know what type of courses you like to play. For me, this layout is absolute nonsense. Nearly every hole has a blind tee shot to a specific distance. Water and landing area that you can't see from the teebox. So many shots that were just blind. I don't see how there aren't multiple deaths here every season. There were maybe 2 holes on the whole course where you could see the landing area (no including par 3s). And when I say you can't see the landing area...its like they WANT you to hit into people.
Hole #2. You step up to the tee box. You can see a mound and you can see the green off in the distance. That's it. The yardage book they give you doesn't do much. They just list 2 or 3 arbitrary distances. So we drive up to the top of the hill to take a look. Water crossing at ~220 and ~3000 And then head back down. Still have no idea what to hit because there's no landmarks of any kind to aim at.
The whole course is like this. Blind target tee shot to a landing area you can't see. Now, we played it and there were only a few other groups out there and I still had TWO instances of people walking over to my ball and either attempting to play it or pick it up. From my "fairway" on the hole that I am playing. Its a shooting gallery.
Conditions: Terrible
Layout: Worst I've ever played
Pace: Fine...for a 1pm Tuesday tee time
Value: Even at $29 I feel like I should have just done something else with the money.
The course was challenging and even though I scored pretty well (for me) I got zero enjoyment from this round. There is no satisfaction in hitting a 4 iron off the tee and saying "I'm pretty sure that's where I'm supposed to go" and then finding it in the rough.
Oh...#10 is a 230 yard par 4. 2 iron onto the green. On a par 4. Ridiculous. I can't even imagine what pace of play is like on a summer weekend.
I will never ever ever be back here. But then again I, with my collared shirt and golf shoes, am not part of their target demographic anyway.
I've played everywhere. All around the US. Overseas. Every big named course in Michigan, etc. I play about twice per week in the summer. Sometimes more. After playing golf for about 35 years, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the worst course I have ever played. Ever. Sorry Bruce Hills. You seem like a lovely group of people with a cute little clubhouse and restaurant...but there is no golf to be played here. At least not by anyone who likes the sport.
Bruce Hills needs TLC
So many areas of the course are under repair and neglected.
Bones of this course are outstanding and the lat out is great, but seems like the course is not being taken care of as it deserves.
Subpar course with poor conditions
One of the worse maintained courses I've been to. Majority of the tee boxes were bad. No flats to tee off, mainly dirt and incredibly hard (broke several tees trying to put them into the ground). Fairways had so many bad spot (hard dirt, massive unintentional divets and areas blocked off for poor conditions). I probably won't play there again.
Great Day
I always enjoy playing Bruce Hills, it has some friendly holes to play, as well as, so challenging holes. The pace of play was great and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff was all very friendly and accommodating. I look forward to returning before too long.
Historic Course and Friendly Staff
I've played this course at least 15 times now and every time I always have a good experience. I learned to play golf on this course with my dad and recently took my son, it was a really amazing experience!
Do Not Waste Your Time or Money
I have golfed this course many times between booking a tee time to attending multiple organized outings, so it is not like I have just had one bad experience at Bruce Hills.
I want to start by saying this… If you are seeing high reviews on here, it is most likely from either the staff or owner asking people to go write positive reviews to outweigh the negative ones.
They are constantly overbooking tee times. If you look at the first two photos.. you can see that I booked a tee time for 2:00 PM and still did not tee off at 2:29 PM (second photo). The third photo my friend and I finally made it onto the tee box at 2:37 PM. They booked two foursomes, yes two, at the same time as us.
I have since golfed here and had the SAME issue. So, the fact that these screenshots are from May 2024 is irrelevant. This was just the only photo evidence that I had of the delays.
For as much overbooking as they do, they should be able to update their clubhouse by now, or at least replace the musty carpeting from 1995.
The pace of play is awful. This place is a magnet for frat boys that have never swung a golf club in their life, but are set out on a mission to see how many beers and glizzies they can choke down in one round. It’s a bad day to be a beer, am I right?
The etiquette of the golfers that play at this place is non-existent. It feels like you’re in the middle of a driving range dodging balls from other fairways, with no courtesy fore warnings.
You want to complain to the ranger? Good luck complaining to a 16-year-old that is just as afraid of confrontation as Bruce Hills is of a bad review.
The cart paths are non-existent in certain areas, or so rugged that the hubcaps were flying off of the golf carts on more than one occasion. I legitimately cannot make this up. (Look at the 4th photo to see the “cart path” from last weekend). If you have a magnet on your range finder, don’t use it because it will bounce off when you are driving on the cart path. The cart paths feel more like off-roading honestly.
I would not golf this course unless you bring some beach toys so you can build a sand castle in the crusty fairways and tee boxes to occupy your time while you wait for the inevitable back up.

Tee boxes really need some work, not level and patchy. My wife and I just played from wherever the tee was best and ignored trhe markers.
Beat up course
Course needs some love especially for $39 a round I would expect nicer
Overall, I had a good experience
Had a great round playing 18 solo. Pace of play was smooth, especially after a thoughtful group let me play through. Only complaint — the grounds crew was working on the greens and rolled up loudly just as I was teeing off. A bit disruptive and distracting, but overall a beautiful day and enjoyable course.
