Of the MSP courses: one of the best
While "out in the sticks", this course is a pleasant difference than other courses in the twin cities area. Fairways are well kept, and the significant vertical variance each hole is a nice change of pace from normal MN golf. This most recent time I played here was typical fall season golf: only one set of tees available, fairways slightly overgrown, and worst of all, the old-school large-punch aerated greens. One of my favorite things about this course is the wide fairways/landing areas, and lack of trees and water. For the average golfer, it is a forgiving course. All-in-all, worth the drive. Will certainly return.
It would have been better except for the rain
I went on a rainy overcast day. It was challenging to navigate because there were rather marshy spots in the fairways at times. I loved not getting paired up with a group so I could golf at my own pace
Great Fall golf
This is a really great course to play in the fall. Very few leaves on the fairways and greens. Not too many lost balls! The course was in good shape. The greens were tough since they had recently been aerated. Course has some challenging holes. If your ball is out of play here it is almost impossible to find it in the long grasses. Hit em straight! We will go back again!
solid venue
Links style front 9, more parkland style back 9.
Its target golf but if you learn the ropes there are some places to put your ball off the fairway where you can still score. I enjoy playing here, check it out.
Pros: Great greens!
Cons: Some uneven tee boxes on the front 9 and the bunkers are a little shallow and firm.
Good layout, nice greens
Except for a couple holes, course has a good layout. Not many blind shots, except for 2 and 16. This course will challenge you if the wind is blowing or if you play the back tees. Nice driving range, kinda short though, no woods if down wind.
Nice Time
Our day started with a great greeting from the staff. The course was in good shape with very nice speed to the greens. Rolling hills with nice elevation changes with fescue meant for very errant shots. We had great time and will be back.
First round at Gopher Hills
Aptly named as wildlife was frequently but not pervasively present. The Heath and the Glen were both good for a double bogey golfer like myself.
Great Experience
Tee's, greens, and fairways in great shape. Greens roll very nice and quick. Pace was 3 1/2 for our twosome. The rough was cut at about 2" and very thick. Blue tees play at 6500?? Lunch special was fantastic! Great service from the restaraunt staff.
Will return for another weekday round for sure.
Gopher hills review
Not a great course but still a good one. Greens were extremely fast, by far the fastest in the area. The bunkers were very hard packed sand not soft at all.
Amateur Course Design
Very rural location. Amateur course design means a lot of frustrating shots and lost balls. Greens were the exception and were very good. We were scheduled without being told we would be behind a large tournament of beginners. We left after 16 holes because of wait times. There was no sign of a ranger to keep play moving.
great course only a short drive from metro
well worth the trip. Ryan, Nate, Ben and the crew are great guys. They love the game and making golf fun for a novice like me.
Head for the hills!
We really enjoyed the course. It was fun. All kinds of different shots. Hilly! We will return . I enjoy a few blind shots.
Poor Layout
The layout has way too many holes that require a second shot to an elevated green and has way too many hard 90 degree doglegs left and right. The greens were very wobbly and this may have been due to what looked like a recent aeiation of the greens. I am afraid I cannot recommend this golf course to any serious golfer who knows a good layout from a bad layout.
Fun
Links style on the front and target golf on the back.
Solid Value
Gopher Hills was a fair test for this average golfer. There were risk/reward opportunities and you could still score without needing to smash driver. The greens were well manicured and the other golfers respected the pace of play nicely for a midweek round. The distinct differences between the front and back nines making the shift from a links-style to a more traditional feel, kept the course interesting throughout. A good value for the price paid.
Hills
The course was in good shape. Lots of hills so be prepared for awkward stances.
Neat little course.
I teed off on the backside and it's very much target golf oriented. A lot of elevation changes. You need to drive the ball accurately, which I somehow was able to do (sort of forced into it). The front side seemed a bit more like a links style course with quite a bit of wind coming into play. The greens were in good shape but super slow. Had a nice time and would probably come back on any given day.
Quick
Fast playing, good conditions. No waiting ! Enjoyable pace for the two of us playing.
dogleg fesque
I thought some of holes didn't give you a fair chance if you were off a little bit your ball was gone.
