Difficult!
Very challenging course with narrow fairways, extreme elevation changes, blind shots, and not a straight fairway to be found! Beautiful and in extraordinary condition though!
Needs beverage help
The course was in relatively good shape. The greens were well kept as well as the as the T boxes.. The fairways needed a little help. Pretty thin.
The beverage cart was off the course too early. 2:00 p.m. Is too early. We didn't buy at the turn because we feel that the server should make $ . As it turned out 2 of the water coolers were empty. Iit was 90 degrees and sunny. We got a bit thirsty.
After the round we had a beverage in the bar. The barkeep was awesome. We got 2 for1. We were told that that is how it works there. Been golfing at Gopher for many years and didn't know that.
All in all it was a great time.
A challenge
The course is OK but has some quirky holes. Greens were nice. Fairways were nice. Bunkers were terrible. Sand, or lack there of, is almost unplayable. I removed my ball from the bunker to play it. Tee boxes on some holes could use some leveling. One fairway has ropes across it because of wetness I guess. Pace of play was good. Staff was very good. Range is excellent. I played on a golfnow price break which made the round worthy.
A different kind of course
GH as its' name implies is very rolling. You will seldom have a level lie here, even many of the fairways have considerable slope and undulation to them. Fairways are reasonably wide but the rough is the thickest & tallest of any area courses & very challenging to hit out of. Bunkers are hard w/little sand -putt out of if you can or use a chipping technique. Greens are reasonably fast and a highlight of the course. Also some excellent views of the surrounding farm country. Fair number of doglegs & blind shots, esp back 9, helps a lot if you have played it before. GH is inexpensive to play and worth playing a few times a year. Probably not a good course if you spray the ball around as you will spend a lot of time looking for your ball. Also recommend taking a cart as walking would be very challenging.
Gopher hills
Very nice course, played middle of the week at noon. Had to wait on every hole. Some of the holes had strange twists or bends to them. First time there so next time there will be less surprises. Very scenic.
Scenic Course
The greens were a nice pace. It is a challenging course for intermediate players, but interesting and fun.
Wide open
The fairways are wide and open, little trees, little water but there are some hills and difficult lies.
Best course in the south metro for the money
Gopher Hills has been my favorite course for many years. It's about 35 minutes away, but worth the drive. The course is challenging without being overwhelming. There is a great variety of hills, trees, flat areas, water, etc. The greens are in wonderful shape, as are the fairways. The bunkers need to be groomed, as they are hard and crusty.
The Spring prices are excellent, and I got an even better deal on GolfNow. The staff was friendly, and I played 18 with a cart in less than 3 hours. Highly recommended!
Not worth the drive:
Not one of my favorite courses. As an older bogie + golfer, I found many difficult holes without adequate markers or directions. I end up spending too much time looking for balls that are difficult to follow. Clubhouse is best part of the experience.
Very Good Cost/Value
The back nine is quite fun. The elevations and bending fairways make for interesting tee shots. The greens were in decent shape for a course in this price range. A nice cost/value round. Wasn't expecting too much. The course over delivered on the cost of the GolfNow Hotdeal.
Goodbtime
Great place to spend an afternoon. Lots of leaves this time of year. Front nine better that back for leaves.
Golf day with my wife
Got a Hot Deal on GolfNow for $10/person. Couldn't pass it up. Was greeted and treated very nicely by an exceptional professional young man. Had a great day on the golf course (beautiful country autumn views). Highly recommend this course. We will be going back for sure!
Very green and wide open
I left my GAP wedge there and I want it back. The course was very green and beautiful. It was the first time I played it. There are a lot of dog legs and several blind shots. If you don't know where you are going you are in trouble. The elevation changes on the par threes mean take lesser clubs or go over the green-I did three times. The first cut of rough was thick but you could play out of it. The gorse was terrible. I lost 3 balls but found 5 others. The greens were excellent and rolled at a 11 or 12 . Good putts were rewarded. Chipping was not bad although the mowed always away from the greens so you always had to chip against the grain. The price was good but it is a way out there. I'll do it again even if I just need to go there and get my lost club. The 19th hole was comfortable and relaxed. Lots of country folk.
Practice your uneven lie in deep rough game here
G.H. is hilly with very few spots you can find a somewhat level lie. And off the fairway, depending on when you play relative to their mowing schedule, you may not find your ball - 4 inch or higher rough (no exaggeration). Greens in good shape with fair amount of contour to them. Hole locations on a couple of greens were impossible. Sand traps are a disaster. G.H. is cheap to play so the overall value is O.K. Has some good scenic views of surrounding countryside.
They call it "Gopher Hills" for a reason
We can certainly see why they call it "Gopher Hills": very hilly terrain and we saw gophers on almost every hole.
Although there are hillier courses, all the hills and elevation changes throughout the course (some pretty steep) made for some cool views and interesting shots.
The hills and the uneven lies they created was the primary challenge of this course. However, you also want to be sure to stay away from the long fescue-like grass if you missed the rough. Although we found a couple of our balls in the these grasses and even hit some shots out of it, it was very tough to do so. But even the rough was surprisingly hard to hit out of; it didn't look particularly long but it was thick.
Not a lot of trees, especially on the front 9, so the wind could become problematic on windier days.
The greens were in good shape and the speed of the greens was moderate; neither fast nor slow. We also thought that the sloping terrain made the greens more challenging to read accurately.
Personally, as a first-timer playing the course, I really enjoyed the course layout as the unusual terrain made for a nice change from the norm and some unique/interesting holes.
Walking up and down all the hills was a bit of a workout, even with golf carts, but it also made the course a lot of fun to play.
Pace of play poor ruined my experience here
Course OK...Back nine pretty good...Pace of play was lousy...Too many twosomes that do not extend the courtesy of letting players through...Man and his wife had the entire course backed up...They had not a clue how to play, etc. Lack of a course ranger a real drawback on this course.
I played G.H. again in mid September. Looks like they got their mowing under control. Rough length was similar to other area courses. When I played it in August, your only option was to try and hack it out to the fairway, assuming you could find it.
