Harkers Hollow Golf Club
About
Nestled in the hills of Scotts Mountain, Harkers Hollow Golf Club was carved from a sloping hillside, giving it a challenging terrain with plenty of elevation changes. Opened in 1929, the golf course has a classic layout designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America. Although it is a seemingly mild 6,551 yards from the back tees, the course plays much longer and harder thanks to the undulating terrain. The layout does offer a few lengthy holes as well as some interesting par 3s. The greens are small and fast with breaks ranging from subtle to dramatic. There is hardly any water but the Lopatcong Creek does run the entire length of the golf course and requires the occasional carry. The par-3 fifth hole is the club's signature. It is particularly notable for its scenery, which is why it has served as the backdrop for many weddings.

A Tale Of What Might Be
Yes the reviews you see on line will be off-putting but ... while sceptical I gave Harkers Hollow a chance. What I found.... like the reviews there are many things that continue to be a work in progress. The fairways are generally closely mown so you dont so much notice that they are 75% crabgrass. The rough has been mown down a bit so you can find your ball but your lie is going to be mostly crabgrass. Long crabgrass is just too penal to hit out of.
The greens were just ok. If they were mown a bit closer and rolled they could present a nice challenge. The bunkers are a mystery. Not one had sand that you could see. They were filled with grass/crabgrass. I guess its possible they are simply letting them become grass hazards but any lie you'll get right now is redonkulous.
The back nine was a bit better conditioned than the front. I actually had a couple of lies on actual grass. That was a treat.
Overall, I would tell you to check the course out if you can get a deal through Golf Now. The layout itself is actually pretty nice and you can see that whenever it used to be a private club, that it probably was a place you would want to play. Rolling hills and some pretty challenging uphill, downhill, sidehill challenges set against the local hill country, so some nice scenery with hillside and valley holes.
I played the course in two hours flat (riding) with no one ahead of me. The staff was friendly and cordial. I hope they are able to bring the course back to a higher state. Yes ... the more seasoned golfer is going to rake the course over the coals but there seem to be a gem buried at Harkers Hollow if someone can just dig it out!
Harker's Hollow
Great value. Course must have been a country club at one time. Locker rooms are huge and clean. Course itself was straight forward. Very few doglegs and bunkers were in bad shape. Greens were good but could have been cut and rolled. A little tlc and this could be a really nice course. I will definitely play this course again. Beautiful setting and swimming pool is a nice touch.
Poor condition
Course has been neglected. No grass on the tees. Fairways have weeds and bare spots. Greens are nice. Bunkers are all weeds. No sand. If you are not on the fautway, good luck finding your ball the grass is so long.
Not well maintained
The course has character, especially the back nine. However, it's clear no effort is being made to maintain it. While the greens are in good shape (albeit very slow), the rest of the course is in sad shape. Hard to tell where the fairways begin and where rough begins. Mostly it's hard, dirt tees and crabgrass fairways. All the bunkers are overgrown and pretty much unplayable. Too bad....it has a good layout but it's not even worth the $25 fee.
Nice greens
Course needs a lot of work. Traps have no sand and tee boxes are rough. Greens are in nice shape. For $17.50 on a hot deal a good value
A shadey course
Played on very hot days. The fact that the course is shaded is a saving grace. A steady breeze made game play acceptable. The course is fun and challenging for both low And high handicappers. Would definitely return.
Sand bunker needs help
For the price i paid on golfnow i have no complaints. But for what they are charging i would not recommend it. The course needs some serious help the greens were in fantastic shape.a good course for the average goler
Course Unkept
The sand traps are filled with weeds . There are no concessions at all available. Cart paths have large holes and bridges are not in use. There are tennis courts that look horrible in the center of the course. Should at least adjust the cost accordingly. I was embarrassed to bring people there.
Fun course
I do like this course but they need to maintain it better. Sand traps had more weeds than sand and there were a lot of downed trees and branches some still there from last year.
There is some...
...Improvement, at least in the greens. I haven't played here in over a year because of the greens. But now we have good greens, but are running about a 5 on the stimp. Fairways are not too bad, but tees and bunkers are horrendous, There is no sand in the bunkers. I imagine this was how golf was played back in the 1920's. So if you like that challenge, go for it. Maybe bring your hickory shafts. $35 to ride is good. Join as a senior($10) and it drops to $25.
Disappointing
Have been to Harkers a few times over the past two years. I understand that the course was quite run down when it was reopened and there was a lot of work to do however there has not been a lot of progress in making the fairways acceptable, the sand traps are for the most part weedy and overgrown, greens are somewhat ok. For the money there are many area golf courses that would give you a much better golfing experience.
Its a shame!
This was one of the best, now it looks like the walking dead course
Good Time
Recommending playing this course to a friend is only with some sort of deal from one of the golf web sites. I'm not quite sure why the courses themselves don't offer the discounted price but hey. They just raised their fees and the numbers they are charging now do not offer the same level of value. The new fee is overpriced and should be reconsidered. For $30 or less, the course is worth the play. The course itself was actually fun playing. The greens were taken care of. However, there are weeds in the bunkers and it seems like that is something that could be easily remedied is it is desired. Some better markings along the course would be helpful - There is a course layout on line that would be worth printing and taking with you if you decide to play. The scorecard does not provide any details of the holes or course layout. All this being said, I had taken my wife who is learning to play and this was a very good course for her to get out and play as we were not being pushed for the entire round which by the way only took about 4 hours.
Getting There
A very historic course that's obviously gone through some tough times. They have it coming back. This is a process and it's going in the right direction. The bunkers need some work but on the whole it was an enjoyable round of golf. It gets a bit tricky when you start playing the slope of the mountainside.
Great layout, but not maintained well
This use to be a great private golf course, unfortunately the conditions have not been kept up. The only good part about the course were the greens. They were cut well and weren't bumpy. The fairways, tee boxes, rough and bunkers on the other hand were full of weeds, dandelions, tree debris, etc. Nonetheless, this golf course has a great layout and could be a phenomenal addition to local play with some TLC. For the price, though, I'd go back again.
Could be good
This is an interesting course with some challenging holes but the condition is terrible More grass and weeds in the bunkers than sand Fairways uncut and weeds growing all over the place Clean it up please because I would love to play it again even at a higher price. We did get great price to play so may come again
Slowly Getting Better
I have been playing at this course for almost 10 years now. It's a shame to see what has happened to it since the Financial Crisis of 2008, but you can't blame the owners for that. This course is in a beautiful part of New Jersey, with an awesome layout of dog legs and scenic views. A few storms have cause multiple trees to fall down in the middle of the course, and the bunkers have filled with dirt and weeds. Greens are always well maintained, making it worth coming back to practice your game. The new ownership is phenomenal and always a friendly atmosphere. The fairways, tee boxes, bunkers, etc. need TLC and this course will be as good as new. I can't wait to see what this course will look like in a few years. I will keep coming back until the club goes back to private lol.
It has potential
Like a previous review said, this place has the bones to be a really nice course. The layout was fun and there was definitely some challenge to it, but it is just not up to a 4-star rating yet. Down trees all over the place, bunkers full of weed and grass and dandelions ALL over the place. Made it very hard to find your ball on even good shots. Hard to distinguish fairway from rough as well. That being said, they don't hide the fact the this is what the course is for now and they charge accordingly. Very interested to see where this course goes, because we did have a good time.
