Harkers Hollow Golf Club
About
Nestled in the hills of Scotts Mountain, Harkers Hollow Golf Club was carved from a sloping hillside, giving it a challenging terrain with plenty of elevation changes. Opened in 1929, the golf course has a classic layout designed by Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America. Although it is a seemingly mild 6,551 yards from the back tees, the course plays much longer and harder thanks to the undulating terrain. The layout does offer a few lengthy holes as well as some interesting par 3s. The greens are small and fast with breaks ranging from subtle to dramatic. There is hardly any water but the Lopatcong Creek does run the entire length of the golf course and requires the occasional carry. The par-3 fifth hole is the club's signature. It is particularly notable for its scenery, which is why it has served as the backdrop for many weddings.

Fun course
I do like this course but they need to maintain it better. Sand traps had more weeds than sand and there were a lot of downed trees and branches some still there from last year.
There is some...
...Improvement, at least in the greens. I haven't played here in over a year because of the greens. But now we have good greens, but are running about a 5 on the stimp. Fairways are not too bad, but tees and bunkers are horrendous, There is no sand in the bunkers. I imagine this was how golf was played back in the 1920's. So if you like that challenge, go for it. Maybe bring your hickory shafts. $35 to ride is good. Join as a senior($10) and it drops to $25.
Disappointing
Have been to Harkers a few times over the past two years. I understand that the course was quite run down when it was reopened and there was a lot of work to do however there has not been a lot of progress in making the fairways acceptable, the sand traps are for the most part weedy and overgrown, greens are somewhat ok. For the money there are many area golf courses that would give you a much better golfing experience.
Its a shame!
This was one of the best, now it looks like the walking dead course
Good Time
Recommending playing this course to a friend is only with some sort of deal from one of the golf web sites. I'm not quite sure why the courses themselves don't offer the discounted price but hey. They just raised their fees and the numbers they are charging now do not offer the same level of value. The new fee is overpriced and should be reconsidered. For $30 or less, the course is worth the play. The course itself was actually fun playing. The greens were taken care of. However, there are weeds in the bunkers and it seems like that is something that could be easily remedied is it is desired. Some better markings along the course would be helpful - There is a course layout on line that would be worth printing and taking with you if you decide to play. The scorecard does not provide any details of the holes or course layout. All this being said, I had taken my wife who is learning to play and this was a very good course for her to get out and play as we were not being pushed for the entire round which by the way only took about 4 hours.
Getting There
A very historic course that's obviously gone through some tough times. They have it coming back. This is a process and it's going in the right direction. The bunkers need some work but on the whole it was an enjoyable round of golf. It gets a bit tricky when you start playing the slope of the mountainside.
Great layout, but not maintained well
This use to be a great private golf course, unfortunately the conditions have not been kept up. The only good part about the course were the greens. They were cut well and weren't bumpy. The fairways, tee boxes, rough and bunkers on the other hand were full of weeds, dandelions, tree debris, etc. Nonetheless, this golf course has a great layout and could be a phenomenal addition to local play with some TLC. For the price, though, I'd go back again.
Could be good
This is an interesting course with some challenging holes but the condition is terrible More grass and weeds in the bunkers than sand Fairways uncut and weeds growing all over the place Clean it up please because I would love to play it again even at a higher price. We did get great price to play so may come again
Slowly Getting Better
I have been playing at this course for almost 10 years now. It's a shame to see what has happened to it since the Financial Crisis of 2008, but you can't blame the owners for that. This course is in a beautiful part of New Jersey, with an awesome layout of dog legs and scenic views. A few storms have cause multiple trees to fall down in the middle of the course, and the bunkers have filled with dirt and weeds. Greens are always well maintained, making it worth coming back to practice your game. The new ownership is phenomenal and always a friendly atmosphere. The fairways, tee boxes, bunkers, etc. need TLC and this course will be as good as new. I can't wait to see what this course will look like in a few years. I will keep coming back until the club goes back to private lol.
It has potential
Like a previous review said, this place has the bones to be a really nice course. The layout was fun and there was definitely some challenge to it, but it is just not up to a 4-star rating yet. Down trees all over the place, bunkers full of weed and grass and dandelions ALL over the place. Made it very hard to find your ball on even good shots. Hard to distinguish fairway from rough as well. That being said, they don't hide the fact the this is what the course is for now and they charge accordingly. Very interested to see where this course goes, because we did have a good time.
great historic course
First and foremost....have realistic expectations about this course. It's a historic private course that went out of business during the great recession and is being brought back to respectable conditions under experienced owners. This is a Robert White course with great bones. the front nine works up and down the mountain on holes 3-8. The back nine works side to side up the mountain on holes 10-16. The course was built in 1929 and really takes advantage of the terrain to give you a variety of lies and shot shapes. Greens were all in very good shape. Tee boxes were a mixed bag but are usable with a sand base. Fairways are gradually recovering, particularly on the back nine. Traps are still a work in progress. For the money, you cannot beat the value of playing a course with this underlying character. And if you land on a bare patch, move your ball to some grass! Same with the bunkers,, rake and place will get it done. This place has great potential given continued time and investment.
Getting Better
This course has improved over the past year or two, the new management is making a real effort. It's a great value and I recommend it.
What great views to enjoy!
The course is much better groomed than I expected and the addition of ladies tee markers was very helpful. The bunkers need more sand but have to say the price was right? Lots of challenging lies on the slopes but great views!
needs work
Cannot distinguish fairways from rough - needs mowing. Weeds in traps and fairways. Down tree branches all over the course. No ball washers out.
Course shouldn't be open until it can be maintained!
Stay away
I know it's March but this place was in bad shape. I played 2 other public places before this round and they were 100% better. No tee boxes, no real distinction between faiways and rough, lots of downed trees and damage to the grounds. This place needs a ton of money and work.
It's a dump
Played here on a $15 hot deal. It's not worth any more than that. Weeds and crabgrass everywhere, it is evident that they are not using any chemicals, pesticides, or water.. Dead patches on the greens. Grass growing in the bunkers which have little if any sand or dirt. Fairways are the same height as the rough. Tee box locations don't match the yardages on the scorecard at all. This is the worst conditioned course by far in western NJ or the Lehigh Valley.
The only great part is that the pace of play is excellent since nobody goes to this place. Walked it in 2 hours 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. I would only recommend this course if you are very short on time and need to get around quick, or you are of limited economic means and this is the only golf you can afford.
It is a shame because this layout has good bones and must have been pretty sweet back when it was a private club. The old Harkers greenskeeper now works at Silver Creek CC in Hellertown and has done a phenomenal job of improving conditions there. It's almost like Harkers has no greenskeeper now, just "guys that cut the grass/weeds."
Worst conditioned course I ever played
Played this on a Saturday afternoon $15 golfnow hot deal, that's about what it was worth.
This course has every weed and invasive plant you can imagine. Fairways and rough are all crabgrass cut to similar height, little distinction. Tee markers do not correspond with what is on the card. No attention to detail on anything. Some greens had major dead patches. The course has a post-apocalypse look if someday water and chemicals are outlawed. The only good thing was the pace of play which was excellent because nobody wants to play it. Not the easiest walk, but doable. I guess this course would be good for beginners because they wouldn't be holding anyone up and obviously don't need to be picky on conditions.
This was a private club that went belly up, I heard it use to be in excellent condition and very challenging back then. If I were a former member I'd cry if I saw this course today.
The pictures on the website were mostly taken before it went public and went downhill.
Based on the course conditions I could only imagine how bad the food would be so I didn't stick around for dinner.
A real gem
My first time here. The course was immaculate. The greens were in better shape (don't forget this is November ) than the bigger country clubs in the Poconos were in April/May. Enough water to make shot planning important. I felt it played true to its yardage if not a little longer.
The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. Would definitely recommend and will definitely return.
