Sunset Valley Golf Course

About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Nice place. In great shape . Shot makers course .
Nice little layout at this course. Pretty easy course , But for the price not a bad place. Greens were in great shape. Tee Boxes decent nothing special ,traps need a little help. But overall for the price not bad. Would play again. If in the area play this course . Not a long hitters course. Long hitters won't need a driver , but will need to make shots with irons etc.
Like the course but round took almost 5 hours.
I like Sunset Valley but the round took 4 hrs and 45 minutes. I wish courses would do more to push the slow players. But everything else was good. Conditions were fine except for one temporary ladies tee on the 12th par 3. And it was good that there was a beverage cart given it was at least 90 degrees.
Sunset Valley . Best shape I have seen it in .
Course is in really nice shape. Best I have ever seen the greens in 20 years, First time back in 7 years. Play mostly private courses now . Course is fairly easy. Have to make a couple of shots, Not really a long hitters course. Shot making is key to this place. Price was pretty high for this course paid $98 with cart . With a county card if you live in Morris County NJ it is around $73 with cart. Course has a lot of walkers which slows down the pace. If your not shooting under 85 all golfers should be riding . Ranger came out and told group in front of us to pick up pace. The manager Patrick Cordoso is very nice guy seems to care about the course and it shows. If you are a beginner or higher than a 10 hadicap this course is for you. For more skilled golfers for less or same price you can play Herron Glen, Neshanic etc. Much better tracks and better golfers on course.
This is a good course to play. The greens were in good condition.
Locals Only
Had a 4:10 tee time on a weekday as a single, I watched the starter go over to ask a threesome if they wanted a single in their group, he proceeded to send them out at 4:05, as I started walking to the first tee, he tells me to go to the putting green, and that they’re behind on tee times so its going to be awhile. I don’t mind waiting a bit, but seeing that he sent them out as a threesome, I knew the deal. I proceeded to get a refund and will not be giving my business to this course ever again. Not worth the headache for a very average golf course.
Chilly May
Late May and it was a bit chilly. Started at 6:30. Done by 11. Greens were tough, as always. Mostly sloped and fast. Rest of the course was in great shape.
Perfect Day
I am an inexperienced golfer but the people in my group were congenial and we had a lot of fun getting to know one another. Sunset Valley attracts a crowd that is serious about golfing and also serious about having a great time.
