Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Love this place
Played here many many times. It is a shame this time there’s was no warning of the aeration and top dressing. I played here 3 weeks ago and inquired about the punch and was told it was happening that same week. 3 weeks later looks as though it was just done. Punch is expected this time of year shame there was no notification from the course to Golf Now booking. Seems as though not much communication occurs between the course and Booking in that I woke up to an email that my 9:10 tee time was double booked and I needed to arrive 20 minutes early then expected. Looks like Golf Now May be losing steam.
Greens aerated
Greens were aerated but nothing was mentioned on Glofnow or by the staff.
Pace of play was slow, had to wait 10 to 15 mins per hole and there was no marshall to manage the pace of play for the slow players
The course is a very nice track, The greens were in good shape, fast and tricky for the first time playing them. Fairways were in good shape also. all in all its a beautiful course.
5:15h for 18 holes!!!
My first time here. Loved the layout, very challenging. Lots of elevation changes, fast greens with tough breaks, fairways in good condition. Too bad people don’t repair their ball marks on the greens. I fixed at least 3 marks per hole, and there were many still left.
My main complaint was pace of play. It took us 5:15h to play 18 holes!! I’ve never experiente that in my life. Sure, it was Saturday afternoon, but come on! You’ve got to do something about this. It is hard to believe someone can take so long to play a round of golf. It just kills your entire day.
I would never go back if I knew it would take me another 5:15h, but I heard from people that played with me and are regulars that it was very unusual, and the normal time is closer to 4:30h. In normal circumstances, I would definitely go back, even though I have to drive all the way from Jersey City. Very good value for the money.
YOU HAVE TO FIX YOUR PACE OF PLAY ISSUES!!!
Sunset great value
Great conditions
Challenging greens
Really nice layout with nice variation in holes.
Great greens- some rough patches
I've been playing Sunset for years and always enjoyed the track. It is tough walking course for me so parring 16-18 was especially rewarding. The greens in typical form were almost unfair on #1, #4, and #6 on the front, especially with the pin placement on 4 which was insane.
I'm still disappointed they can't get grass to grow evenly throughout the course. The first par 3 down hill had some very rough areas with hardpan and uneven growth. I'm always surprised the yardage from the White tees is less than 6,000 yards- the course plays tough and is always a challenge (84 today).
not too bad course
Bit slow in part due to expected rain, but was surprised at the number of golfers. Layout is interesting, but most challenging parts are greens. Super fast and well maintained, really found putting to be most challenging part of the course.
Fairway maintenance could use some work and noticed seeds on carts were empty so couldn't fix my divots well on front nine. Rangers were driving by which is good to see, but they should advise golfers to fix their own divots on green. All in all fair round at fair price. For Golfnow users, additional charges on carts for 18 pp.
Slow play
Over 5 hr round. This is too slow. Course is nice, good condition but I won’t be back. I played a couple years ago here and that round was even slower. 2 strikes, you’re out
Perfect Day
First time on course. Course has great elevation changes which provides a good workout if walking. Greens were fast but fair. Would definitely go back for another round.
Always a challenge
If you remember Sunset from the 80svand 90s you will enjoy the redesign.
Still Early - Cool Spring
Course is coming along. Greens were mostly healed from aeration but still thin, fast and a bit bumpy (afternoon tee time). Pace ok but could have been quicker - 4:30 for the round. Group in front of us picked it up after ranger intervention. Thanks for that staff! I enjoy this course and will play it again.
Early spring - warmest day of the season
Sunset in Morris County is a good test for golfers of all levels. Great walking course with challenging elevation changes. Today the normally fast greens were simply unfair! I chalk that up to early aeration and greens which are still hardened from cold temperatures. A lot of debris around the course from the harsh late season wet snowfalls. For a good non county rate of $35 I’ll walk this course anytime.
Greens are unfair; conditions lacking
This course was in bad shape. Fairways all chewed up, burnt out patches of rough and fairway abound.
Aside from conditions, the greens were just patently unfair. Some did not roll true, many bounces. They also contain many severe slopes, and to make matters worse they keep them at freaking US Open speed. I had a pin high putt on one hole that I aimed 4 feet left. It got almost to hole high with slight break, but then made a 90 degree turn right, rolled past the hole by about 6 inches, and continued to roll another 20 feet off the green. This was the most extreme example, but there were countless other unfair pin locations where well-placed approaches go rolling in every direction. I watched a 5-yard chip shot, well struck with height proceed to roll 80 ft off the back of a green.
Just absolute insanity. I will never be playing there again, and I can't believe I wasted my time.
