About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Great views and conditions
Everything was perfect as per conditions and layout. You need to play smart in order to score. Big drives won't necessarily do it on most holes. Greens were in very good condition..
My only non 5 star rating was pace of play. The people we followed on front 9 were fine. Played it in 1hour 45 minutes. Suddenly another couple started on back 9 so there were 3 groups on same hole. Back 9 was long to say the least. I will go back. Great course
Good Day
Pace of play for a weekday round was pretty slow. Waited a fair amount and then had people hitting into us as well.
Good time otherwise and course in great shape.

I really enjoy this course, get try to play there 2-3 times a year.

Pace of play was impacted by new golfers in front of us.
Also staff signing people in an assigning carts was not attentive. He spent time talking to co-workers instead of assisting customers and would not allow us to set up golf cart to play prior to 10 minutes before tee time, then rushed us out to first tee box.
Course was in great condition but pace of play was slow and 3:50pm tee time did not enable us to play full 18 due to pace of play in front of us. I expected to play 15 holes we only were able to play 12.5. which was frustrating especially considering cost for two players

Pace of play is killing a beautiful course
I live close by and play here often . Over the years the course has become better and better. Unfortunately the pace has been terrible. This round was 4hr 45’ and we skipped 16 and 17. Same for last week. The rangers do nothing but look for lost balls. Because of the layout you are able to see where there are delays and it’s frustrating to see open holes and sometimes 2 in front of one slow group. With fees increasing to upper levels for a public round they should do more to ensure a good round. As a pretty regular player here it feels like they’re done when they collect their money. It’s a shame because it’s a fantastic course.
