River Vale Country Club
About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Enjoyed the road
Really liked the course and it was in good condition.
Fairways need work
Fairways were hard and needs more grass. Many areas were under repair and balls flying all over from other fairways. This place is really turning into a municipal course and it's a shame.
Hilly with blind shots
Could be a great course if the rate of play was sped up. There were a couple of groups of beginners ahead of us and we waited on almost every shot. Loved the hills and blind shots. It made for an interesting round.
Great NJ course
Great layout. Not too far from Manhattan. Fantastic Hot Dog! Friendly Staff and nice facilities.
Need to hit shots both ways.
Course is in very good shape, greens roll nice and it's only May. Players need to fix ball marks on the green. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Great camaraderie in the clubhouse. Good practice facilities. 18 is a solid finishing hole.
It was horrible. I didn't get any information about the course being aerated so we were only able to play the same 9 holes twice instead of the full 18 hole course.
Great place
One of the best places to play thats close to nyc .
Just opened but in reasonable shape , will get lot better as it does each year , decent warm up / range area . Great holes and a good tough test
Good winter price
staff are friendly- lost a club and staff retrieved right away.
I did not lose a beat
:-)
Bad course maintenance
Very poor condition. Slow greens terrible fairway and teebox
Loved it
Loved the course. Everything was in exceptional condition including carts and practice facilities. The par 5's were tough, as well as several par 4's. Greens were in great shape, especially for this time of year. Will definitely return and recommend to others as well. Great friendly staff.
Trap work in progress
Sand traps worked on changed a par 4 to 293 yards. Active work could be done later in the year, when not busy. The course in general is in good condition. The upgraded traps will be a plus. They have a course that could be the best in N.J.
Challenging Greens
Many blind approach shots and undulating greens makes this course a good challenge very enjoyable great views of the lake pretty lay out
Nice course very challenging
Played River Vale for the first time and found it very challenging. Course was in nice condition and the staff was super friendly. Luckily got paired with another twosome who knew the layout otherwise the blind shots and trouble areas would have been even more difficult. Only caveat is that for many of the tee shots you cannot see if the group in front of you has cleared the fairway due to elevation dips so there should be a bell to ring or a ranger to inform the tee box that it is clear to hit.
TOO SLOW!!!!
2 Rangers and they did NOTHING to move play along. 5 hours and 15 minutes to play 18 holes. Unacceptable. Will NOT go back to that course even though a good layout.
Nice layout
The course itself is designed quite well. Some challenging holes with different elevations making club selection difficult. The rough is well grown out and the fairways are all in very good shape. However, the greens are in very bad condition. Divots all over every green and you never get a true roll. The hole is over once you hit the green.
