River Vale Country Club
About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Played rivervale for the first time, course is in e cellent shape,
River vale is a very challenging course, in great condition, very nice greens and fairways.
Worth the booking
Nice course. 6500 off the back. Fairly tight with good elevation changes. Contoured greens in very good shape -could be a little faster. Well worth the expense and time.
A work in progress
Well maintained course that is challenging but not overly so. They are spending money to improve the facilities and the staff is friendly.
Challenging and in great shape
Very tight course with extremely difficult sloped greens.
Short but Challenging
Rive Vale doesn't overwhelm you with distance, but uses height changes, undulation and blind spots effectively although the course can feel cramped in areas. The regular rate ($99 on weekends) is not a good value, since the play speed and condition of the course is more 'municipal' than upper scale.
The facilities are very good, with driving range, short game area, putting green and the 19th hole.
Definitely seek out discounted green fee, preferably during non-busy hours.
Overrated, not worth the money
Tee boxes are in horrible condition- uneven, divots, dead grass. Blind shots everywhere. Awful pace of play.
Overpriced green fees could be better used at other courses.
Good course at GolfNow discount
Rivervale is stuck between a municipal course and a private one. It has been taken over by the town briefly and then run as a private course. Full price ($77) is simply too much $ for this course. It is maintained well but far from meticulously. For $300+ a foursome can play a nicer course in the area. Rivervale used to offer GolfNow discounted rates more frequently, We played for $46 each w/ cart and the place was empty. I never ran a golf course but I imagine a course full of people paying $46 is better than an empty course at $77.
The grass just off the fairways was long enough to lose a ball or two. Frustrating when you over shoot the green to an open area and cannot find your ball.
Best golf course in area
Great layout, challenging, greens and fairways well maintained, some tee boxes need weeding. Like the course more every time I play.
One of the better courses in the area.
course was in great shape. Greens were perfect for this time of year. Course was not busy but it was in the middle of the day. Would definitly play it again.Bonus was senior price had a big discount.
Ok course, red tees fine for longer hitting women, but some holes tee boxes should be reconfigured
Greens in good shape. Fairways ok. Rough areas and tee boxes could use more mowing, more grass. Bunkers not bad. Yellow tees very good for longer hitting/low handicap women but the red tees sometimes required carries that would make a shorter hitting female, beginner or high handicapper get frustrated.
great layout
I love the layout of this course. The conditions were OK but not pristine. I probably fixed 50 divots on the greens during my round. Certainly not the course's fault but it speaks to the type of people who play here. We went out as a twosome and played the front nine in an hour and 40 minutes and the back nine in two hours and 15 minutes once we ran into two threesomes that were taking their time in front of us. not bad for a saturday afternoon though. at discounted rates this is a fun course to add to the rotation. I wouldnt pay full price for it though.
RiverVale
Course continued to be a good challenge. We played in the morning and the only annoying thing was the water sprinklers were on for a large part of the round. Although we just had a tremendous heat wave, the course was saturated. Understandable that the grass and greens were long (and very slow) but it affected play a little. All that aside, it is an enjoyable test at a respectable cost.
Slowly coming back
I used to play this course back in 2007-2008 and it was great. But I did notice the decline... Greens not maintained, fairways dried up with no divot fixes... But played here cause it was the only close to play with a group of four. To my surprise, they got new mgmt and the place actually was in good condition. I say in a year this place will be great.
A good course to play
we love the course. it's very fun to play and will come back.
Nice layout, slow greens, bad tee boxes.
The layout of this course is nice. Nice elevations, and the greens had some slopes in them. It was my second time playing the front nine, as it was my first time ever playing the back nine at this course. I thought the back nine was a little harder than the front nine. The greens were not rolling true. Although my putting was good the day I played, the greens were not fast. The fairways were not great. The grass was pretty long for some reason. The tee boxes were like hitting off grass in my backyard. The course is not too difficult. I played from the Blue (Back) tees, and the have it as a 132 slope. There is no way. I would probably say it's a 125 slope. It's not a long course, but the toughest part I'd say are greens. Not easy to read. If you're going to play here, pay the right price. I thought the $99.00 was a little high for the playing conditions.
course was in perfect shape a real pleasure to play
pace of play was very good woman in the pro shop was extremely nice as were the starters in the parking lot excellent staff course was perfect fun playing this course
Great value with discounted golfnow price
Greens were very well maintained. Staffs were very friendly. Grasses other than fairway could be maintained better. It is very hard to find ball for second shot out of rough.
Nice NJ Track
This course has a country club feel without the stuffy staff and rules. Can be hilly on a lot holes and scenic with the pine straw. Definitely play again but only for the right price. Non-members and residents fees is $100.00, in my opinion is too much for this course. But Golf Now got it for $65 with cart included, great value. Get in shape for the 215 yard Par 3 and 534 yard Par 5 18th hole they are a real challenge.
Shagadellic
Been playing here for 30 years, a Donald Ross Gem! Never seen it like this before. Medium speed greens which are usually fast. Un cut for several days were the fairways and even more neglected was the primary rough which was clumpy and in some spots 6 inches then a foot high in the same area. Hoping this a glitch in maintenance and not the future for this great track.
