River Vale Country Club
About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Back 9 Missed - Lightning
Played the front 9. Fun and challenging course. Unfortunately, lightning through us off the course. We received a 9 hole rain check. Can't wait to complete.
River Vale
Great conditions. Ranger a little pushy. A little too expensive for course amenities.
A very enjoyable Round of Golf
The course is in very good condition. The staff,
particularly the young man who was the Starter, were friendly and efficient. Definitely plan to come back and play again this Summer
Good Course
Cart staff needs some help with their customer service. They were a bit over zealous regarding a water bottle. It was a very hot, humid afternoon and they told me I couldn't bring a water bottle on the course. They explained that we had to talk with the pro shop. The pro shop was accommodating and let us take our water bottle.
Private club feel, but for a price
I played River Vale for the first time this past weekend. I found the course to be in excellent condition, have a good staff, and somewhat challenging (slope 130+ from back tees).
Each hole had relatively unique shots and some interesting doglegs; one is a 90 degree angle with a sign begging you not to cut the corner (we did anyway, haha). I should also mention that this would be a tough course to walk.
The cost of the club for non-residents is high ($100), but with a Goflnow hot rate it's reasonable. It's a great deal for local residents, but still a good deal for non-residents since you get what you pay for. I'd recommend the course to a friend and will be back.
Very much improved from previous years
The staff was very courteous and professional, we went out on time, and even though we were playing on a Saturday mid-day, the pace of play wasn't too terrible, and we had almost no wait on any of the holes. Of course, this is a challenging course, but we never had any problems with the marshals telling us (or anyone else we could see) to speed up.
The course itself was in great condition, and we had no cause for complaint in that regard.
Overall, it was a great time, and we will play there again soon. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who's looking for a challenging layout.
Not great
Swampy in spots, some fairways muddy, greens pocked with ballmarks and sand wasp all over. Would not play again even at discounted rate.
Give it 2 stars for proximity to city only.
Very nice layout
Beautiful day played in 4:15 Shot 77 back to back birdies and just missed a 3rd.
Great golf experience.
I played River Vale only 2.5 times. It is in excellent shape. Tee boxes, fairways and greens are wonderful, providing some scenic views.
You get an interesting variety of holes. Some wide fairways, water in play on some, some up-hill, some down-hill some relatively flat and open. A few dog-legs. One long par 3.
Fairly new electric golf carts with ball and club cleaning apparatus. The staff is very friendly.
Food & snack service is very good.
Since I have only played 3 times I do not have a good feel for typical pace of play. My 1st time playing was 9 holes, no hold-ups. The 2nd time, a 3-some, we finished in about 3.5 hours. Both of those were mid-day during the week. This weekend, not as good, just a bit less than 5 hours.
I used GolfNow to get a discounted rate, which seems to be offered a few times a week.
River Vale is a new find for me and now one of my favorite courses.
No more golf at this course
I played several times at this course. However, at this time, it was very unpleasant. The staffs were unkindly and the rangers ruined our day and feeling. They forced us to rush our play even if there were no players following us. I guess it's because we took our time to eat lunch.
It was very unpleasant experience and I will never play golf at this course again. It's not worthy to pay that much.
Play it again
This course was in great shape, pace of play was very good and staff was friendly and helpful. Looking forward to the opportunity to play again.
Green
The green, & fairway are excellent for spring. I was surprise how nice the green, & fairway are.
I'll go back sometime soon.
Played rivervale for the first time, course is in e cellent shape,
River vale is a very challenging course, in great condition, very nice greens and fairways.
Worth the booking
Nice course. 6500 off the back. Fairly tight with good elevation changes. Contoured greens in very good shape -could be a little faster. Well worth the expense and time.
A work in progress
Well maintained course that is challenging but not overly so. They are spending money to improve the facilities and the staff is friendly.
Challenging and in great shape
Very tight course with extremely difficult sloped greens.
Short but Challenging
Rive Vale doesn't overwhelm you with distance, but uses height changes, undulation and blind spots effectively although the course can feel cramped in areas. The regular rate ($99 on weekends) is not a good value, since the play speed and condition of the course is more 'municipal' than upper scale.
The facilities are very good, with driving range, short game area, putting green and the 19th hole.
Definitely seek out discounted green fee, preferably during non-busy hours.
Overrated, not worth the money
Tee boxes are in horrible condition- uneven, divots, dead grass. Blind shots everywhere. Awful pace of play.
Overpriced green fees could be better used at other courses.
Good course at GolfNow discount
Rivervale is stuck between a municipal course and a private one. It has been taken over by the town briefly and then run as a private course. Full price ($77) is simply too much $ for this course. It is maintained well but far from meticulously. For $300+ a foursome can play a nicer course in the area. Rivervale used to offer GolfNow discounted rates more frequently, We played for $46 each w/ cart and the place was empty. I never ran a golf course but I imagine a course full of people paying $46 is better than an empty course at $77.
The grass just off the fairways was long enough to lose a ball or two. Frustrating when you over shoot the green to an open area and cannot find your ball.
Best golf course in area
Great layout, challenging, greens and fairways well maintained, some tee boxes need weeding. Like the course more every time I play.
