First time at Pound ridge
Beautiful golf course. Well maintained. Staff was helpful.
Best in the area...but!
This was my third round at Pound Ridge. The first time I have played it with my 15 year old son. His jaw hit the ground when we pulled up just seeing the beautifully manicured grounds.
Pound Ridge is unique as it is the only public course in this area that could easily be confused with a private club. I would have given it 5 stars if not for 2 items that I find consistently annoying:
1. Beware of going out without a foresome. I don’t know what it is about this course that attracts rude and inconsiderate players.
2. I booked a hot time. Despite the fact that it was wide open (literally 20 straight open tee times), the GM made us wait for our time. Who’s it going to hurt Mr GM?
All in all, I highly recommend this course for anyone who can afford the fees. Just try and fill your group to avoid the inevitable single (20 handicapper) who wants to experience the course from well back!
Championship course with slow greens
I could not say anything bad about the course but the greens were extremely slow for a course what reminded me over some of the nicest country clubs I have had the honor to play! Staff was amazing, very busy so was held up on a few holes but still got it in around 4 hours!
A Special Value and Course
Fantastic conditions and course. Expensive but worth the splurge. New equipment this year for their greens (they had just used when I played) which makes them immediately firmer and faster.
Also removed a lot of trees to get more air circulation and sun in. I know conditions were hard for everyone in the northeast last year with the rain. This will help a lot. They’re rolling great unlike some others that are still wet and soft all the time.
A very enjoyable round on a challenging course
Earlier comments about course condition and staff friendliness had me thinking about my choice, but I was very happy to see a course in fantastic shape and the staff absolutely professional, attentive and welcoming. I struggled with some brutal thick rough on some holes (even losing a couple of balls in the rough) but was told it will be cut back a bit. The layout demands target golf on some holes and very rewarding if successfully navigated.
Conditions could have been better
It could have been because of all the rain but the greens were bumpy, slow and not in their usual condition. Many of the t-boxes were in poor condition. Again all of this could be because of all the rain we have had but the course was not in its usual good condition. Hopefully this will improve into the fall. I will play here again.
Great layout. Some greens have mud. HORRIBLE STAFF
Course itself was great. Challenging, beautiful, risk reward golf at its finest. Gotta keep it straight or bring a lot of balls. I hope management sees this please fire your whole staff working outside. Kindness goes a long way we are customers and get some real range balls. I will not be back solely because of how the larger older man treated me while I was there. Absolutely unacceptable
Perfect except the greens
Pound Ridge is about an hour north of the city and is the only Pete Dye course available in the area; it's easily a top 5 NY public course.
It truly lives up to the difficulty hype w/ Dye's signature undulation and meticulously planned challenges. Heck, even distance becomes a factor at times where a handful of holes require carrying 210+ (when hitting from 6700yd Oak tees... ) which is arguably too penal for amateurs . Most holes are narrow and many holes are stacked right next to each other. Facilities are top notch and you truly get what you pay for. The only blemish is that their greens are in terrible condition... some worse than your local munis. Some greens arguably need to be completely redone.
Overall, Pound Ridge is a wonderful course that I'd return to for a special occasion. However, due to the higher cost and bad green conditions, it's hard to recommend as a regular weekend course.
Great layout Poor conditions
Love the layout every hole is unique but greens were very chewed up and bumpy. In there defense there has been a lot of rain and course was very wet . payed $120 with a hot deal but if i paid there regular price i would have been very upset.I will play course again but not for$ 240.
Diamond in the rough
It is well off the beaten path but worth the drive. The course is quintessential Pete Dye design which I adore. The staff needs work on customer service. I mean when a bag drop guy steals your pro v1 and laughs about it when you confront him and doesn’t return it then the round starts off sour. Also not accommodating in any fashion with the attitude that he didn’t want to be there in the heat. The course nevertheless is a fun and interesting layout that I enjoyed.
Fast green
Excellent course conditions. Very fast green n very friendly staffs
Great course
Excellent course in top condition. The views and setup of the holes are excellent, and it is a good challenge throughout.
The only negative is that the cost is high - $150 per and $230 per on weekend mornings. The deal on GolfNow was a bit better. This course is very worth playing, but selectively relative to the cost structure.
Worth playing
A little off the beaten path. Well worth the trip. Very good layout. In very good shape. Staff helpful and courteous. First time playing. Tees are appropriate for all skill levels. My wife (36 handicap) did not feel overwhelmed from her tees. Played from the granite tees (6200), tough but fair. Typical Pete Dye rolling greens in great shape and rolled true. Would highly recommended this course to others.
Fun day
Challenging Pete dye course, with undulating greens, narrow fairways. 15 th hole par 3 very odd. Overall, had a nice round, friendly staff, do think it’s a bit over priced
First class course right from the starter handing out towels and water. Great layout and we were never playing up on the group ahead of us even though they were walking. And we never got played up on. will Definitely be back.
Do you know how many new golf balls the outside staff comes across from balls being left in carts at the end of a round and otherwise?
