Are you kidding me?! Not worth $$$
Summary: Course conditions no longer justify the exorbitant greens fees. Save your money.
Greens fees at $210 are nearly double the highest competitor within a 100 mile radius, which led me to expect exceptional course conditions, but I was highly disappointed after my round this past weekend. (For comparison, Ballyowen charges $140 peak but you can usually get a discount, and the turf is always in at least above average condition.) Pound Ridge's fairways were dried out in most places, and unevenly cut in many others. First cut of rough in many areas didn't look to be mowed for a few days and was highly inconsistent; tee boxes were torn up and evidenced either significant play volume or lack of basic maintenance. Most greens were in decent shape but had damage from ball marks which were either not repaired or not repaired properly. Some greens had large patches where turf was just in bad shape. The only upside is that the high fees price out most people, so you can get around very quickly.
A must play in New York if you can afford it
Course layout is beautiful and conditions are always kept up. For a NYC resident, it's a hike to play this course often. Being the only Pete Dye design course in the NYC area, this course is a must play for avid golf lovers. Price is a bit high but totally worth playing especially if played once. For me Bethpage is a lot closer and less than half the price. I also reside near the Trump course as well so I wouldn't frequent Pound Ridge often.
Only missing a windmill
Nice scenery and good course conditions. This course has fairways cut into the side of hills, large rock out croppings in the middle of greens and more rocks in the middle of fairways. This course is so contrived that it's much more like a miniature golf course than a real test. Save your money.
wanted to love it
I live 8 mom minutes from the club and wanted to join. Got there and first discovered the sand bunkers were bottomed out with water as it rained the day before. Public courses nearby All drain by next day.
The greens were nothing near as nice as what we expected.
The owner was playing behind us and the ranger came up to us and asked to speed up play. He mentioned the owner was playing behind us; too which I responded he will have to wait because I gave him 240$+ dollars to play in lousy greens and drenched bunkers.
Then came lunch. Not allowed to leave cart to go into cafe too select items. And the quality of the food was totally sub-par, no pun
I really wanted to join but they came up short.
Pound ridge. Too tough
Nice. But too tricky. Shot 86 w 42 putts. The pros couldn't break par from the tips
Worth splurge at $100!
Challenging course. Greens were very good but not great. Good value at $100 !
Dyabolical
For fans of Pete Dye, Pound Ridge does not disappoint, but be prepared to scramble . . . it's a tough course. Given the time of year, playing conditions were better than I expected. One word of caution: To give yourself any chance of reasonable scoring, IGNORE the posted recommendations on the 1st Tee on what tees to play and move up one tee box from what your handicap would normally dictate. Several of the holes that appear to be reachable in regulation, really aren't. It can be amusing to play with folks who are mid-handicappers and insist in playing off the Granite Tees and then discover that they can't get to many greens in regulation. But, given the difficulty of the course and what one pays to play . . . and this is not a cheap course most of the time, what's the point in not giving yourself a chance? Do yourself a favor and move up!
This place is a real treat
Everything was in great shape. The greens were super fast. Don't pass up an opportunity to play here.
Great Challenging Round
Played on Columbus Day, 2014. Overcast skies didn't hamper the fun. This course is extremely challenging for the average recreational golfer. As it is late in the year the greens are a bit spotty with marks and lack of growth. No reflection on the overall course quality. This is a must play for those serious about their game and wanting to try different Westchester courses. A few very hard forced carries, and narrow shots. The greens' profiles are very challenging.
The staff was great from the bag handlers to the starter to the waitress in the grill room. My hats off to them.
AS good as it gets
This course is a gem. The greens weren't as good as usual but other than that it was a total pleasure. A little more expensive than the other public courses but well worth it.
poundtown
expensive but pete dye is the man. will always look to play peteys courses
Expensive and challenging, greens are a bit rough
No doubt about it, Pound Ridge is a beautiful course, well laid out, in a picturesque setting. The Pete Dye design is extremely difficult, and a terrific challenge for better golfers. The greens were a bit disappointing, however, with lots of rough spots. Also, the club has stretched "seasonal" rates to the beginning of November, much later than most other public courses. The $165 per person rate seems excessive, especially when golfnow rates can be easily secured at $120.
Conditions make it not worth the money
Played it in July and 9/21. Aeration holes all over course in July (from April Aeration) and still there yesterday. Lots of bare spots on greens and rough
Many drainage issues - several holes cart path only.
Layout is pretty tricky and requires very strong shots, including a number of forced carries. If you can't hit the ball very far and moderately straight, it will be very long day.
But its a decent challenge for the low single digit player. But not for the 16+ player at all. They don't belong on this course.
CLubhouse is just manufactured building. No real kitchen and food is pretty pricey - ok but nothing special. Driving range is nothing special and is moderately long walk from putting green and 1st tee.
Pace of play reasonable even with several holes cart path only (been that way all year).
Interesting layout as no railroad ties. He used stones as walls.
Definitely not best course in area - Bethpage Black clearly better. But its a very strong decent course. But I don't think its worth what they are charging and they said they're noticeably raising the rates next year.
SLope and USGA on Golf Advisor site seriously wrong - 76.0/150 from tips, 71.7/142 from normal white tees (called granite there).
So its an extremely difficult course according to the USGA. And it plays that way.
Classic Pete Dye layout
Finally made it up to play Pound Ridge this past weekend. Beautiful end of summer weather and relatively quiet day at the course. Staff was incredible, friendly and helpful. Course was is pretty good shape. The greens had been punched recently but still rolled pretty true. Some trouble spots on a handful of greens. Fairways, even rough. and quality tee boxes made up for it. If you like Dye courses Pound Ridge is a must. No shortage of pot bunkers and mounds here.
BEWARE
THIS IS THE ONLY COURSE IN THE GREATER NYC REGION THAT I HAVE ENCOUNTERED IN THE LAST 10 YEARS THAT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CANCEL A TEE TIME 24 HOURS BEFORE IT IS SCHEDULED.
BOOK AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!
EVERY (100%) OTHER COURSE WILL ALLOW YOU TO CANCEL WITH NO PROBLEM.
Pete. Dye experience
Classic Dye design. Close to NYC. I'm glad I tried out the course. But don't think. I'll ever. Feel the need to play it again. There are so many. Quality courses within a 30 mile radius of this course and many are a much better value dollar for dollar.
Check your ego at the first tee of Pound Ridge
Think you're a stick?
Pound Ridge will convince you otherwise. Pound Ridge will, as the name suggest, pound you into submission. Pete and Perry Dye transformed a gorgeous site into a house of hazards for players. From the second set of tees - where my partner and I played - there are a handful of harrowing 190-200 yard carries just to clear wetlands/water to reach the narrow fairways lined with mounds and volcano bunkers. The humps and hollows of the greens fall off into closely shaved collection areas. Despite all these potential pitfalls, playing Pound Ridge can be intoxicating. There are moments of pure serenity deep in the woods. It's hard to believe you're just an hour's drive from New York City. Both Golfweek and Golf Digest rank Pound Ridge among the best public courses in the state. An improved kitchen serves made-from-scratch sandwiches, burgers and salads for lunch in a cozy clubhouse.
Pound Ridge What a course
The green had some moss on them but stilled rolled well. What an amazing course well worth the $. I will play there again this fall.
Designed to mess with your head
Very tricky course. Pete Dye has thought of it all. The course will only get better as it matures.
