Boring course, awful pace of play
This is one of the worst of the NYC munis. The course is boring. Every hole is wide open and straight, with nothing interesting about the holes, the greens, the bunkers, nothing. The pace of play is the worst. At every tee there where two other groups on the hole throughout the round. The course is nowhere near worth it. Avoid.
My first love...
La Tourette is one of the better NYC Municipal Courses. Like most Muni's, she has her bumps and her bruises, but for 4 hours (much longer sometimes) she can still captivate and delight you. She is very fair, giving as much as she takes. She's a good test for mid to high handicappers; long enough to challenge and generous enough to forgive. La Tourette is where I played my first round of golf, and where I plan on playing my last.
Best of the NY Municipals
Getting there is half the fun and the cost. It will cost you $16 to get across the Verrazano. Its worth it. From the Blue tees this is a big boys golf course at close to 7000 and long carries required. Best fairways in the muni rotation. Elevated tees allow for a grip it and rip it approach but you still need to be accurate as its a parkland course and the trees and deer are there to remind you. One of the few driving ranges where you can hit driver. Weekend rounds are 5+ hours but what else is new. It's a good test although a bit expensive compared to the other munis but you get what you pay for.
In great condition
Been playing this course for years and it's in the best condition I've ever seen. Kudos to the superintendent/staff. It's more expensive than the other New York City courses, but still worth playing. We had a great time. Foursome finished in just over 4 hours. That's fantastic by NYC municipal standards. Book a round.
Room for improvement
Tee boxes are not in good shape. Fairways and Greens are good pace of play was painful over 5 hours
The course played very well and was in good condition especially for this time of the year. The pace of play was much better than it is during the height of season.
Good course for letting it rip off the tee.
The fairways are wide with no dog legs where you don't have a decent angle in for your approach. Par threes are very short. Fun layout. Had a few good undulating greens.
The only downfall was the pace of play which was horrid. And the thing that made it worse was the fact that there were no rangers to push the slow groups along. We had to pile our entire foursome on my cart to skip the slow group ahead of us. (Gave myself a par. Ha.) Pretty bad from that standpoint.
If you can get on and avoid the slow pace of play, it's an extremely fun and casua course.
Fun layout
Course is in great shape. Greens rolling true and fast. Fairways and tee boxes clean and lush.
Pace of play can be better but thats most courses.
Just one of those long rounds
My earlier review I already said this place is hit or miss. Learning the game on this course I played here in all different situations whether enjoyable to as bad as self-inflicting pain. Today was one of those days where the course was overbooked and the front 9 took 3 hours to finish. Weekends are like this but this is a Wednesday afternoon. With their "Players Club", members could pretty much walk on whenever they please despite people having tee times. Never have I seen 4 different foursomes trying to play a hole simultaneously. (2 foursomes waiting on the tee box, another foursome in the fairway, and the last foursome putting on the green. This is the first time I played La Tourette this year so this overbooking during the week was new to me. At least now I know how people are getting treated, I'm not coming back here for a while.
Best kept Secret
First time playing La Tourette. I heard good things about it but never consider driving out to Staten Island. After playing it the course, believe me it's well worth the trip. The course is wide open and yet still has long, challenging holes. The place is well manicured and the pace of play is Awesome. Staten Island (LaTourette) will definitely be seeing much more of me.
