Dan Maples, architect of the nationally acclaimed Pit Golf Links, has created another masterpiece only minutes from the Village of Pinehurst. Longleaf Golf & Family Club was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence and training track. The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined and dramatically elevated. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."

Rough conditions, mediocre layout

Played four courses in NC this week. This one was the only regret.

Longleaf Family Golf Review

This was my second time playing the course. The first time playing the course was roughly a 6-8 months ago and I was super impressed. Not sure if my exposure of other courses since then made this time feel underwhelming. Course was in decent condition but seemed to not meet the price target. To meet the price I’d expect better cart paths, more manicured tee boxes, range balls included with greens fee, and a putting green that is not overfilled with private lessons (literally had nowhere to practice putting due to US Kids Golf training). The greens were recently aerated which is understandable and didn’t weigh on this rating.

Horrible appalling conditions

Their holding pond dam broke last year. Their fairways and tee boxes are dead and they still charge $150. I booked a month out as i had a guest from out of state. They never said a word. They should be embarrassed and ashamed.

Terrible experience

We had a group of 8 golfers travel to Pinehurst from Boston, Richmond, and Columbia, excited for a great day of golf. What we experienced at Longleaf Golf & Family Club was beyond disappointing—and frankly unacceptable for $150 per person.

There were no real fairways—just brown, patchy ground with little to no grass. On multiple par 3 holes, we had to hit off mats, like we were at a driving range instead of a course charging premium rates.

Even worse, the course had active construction happening throughout. We had to play around excavators, dump trucks, and heavy equipment in several areas. At one point, large construction vehicles were using the cart paths while we were trying to play. It wasn’t just frustrating—it felt unsafe.

None of this was communicated ahead of time. Had we known the true conditions, we never would have booked. Instead, we paid full price for what was a severely compromised and substandard experience.

The only positives: the gentleman who helped with our bags was outstanding, and the young woman at the turn was friendly and professional. They did their jobs well—but they couldn’t make up for the overall experience.

If you’re considering playing here, I strongly recommend you do your homework first. This was not the Pinehurst golf experience we traveled for.

Tough but fun!

Played this course the day after Christmas first thing that morning. Very few people on the course when we took off. Great amenities, friendly staff, I had a great time! The course is somewhat narrow but the greens, OMG! I found them to be monsters 😂. Pretty sure I was putting for birdie about 12 times and I know half those holes I walked off with a bogey. Humbling for sure but still overall I loved it.

Bad pace of play

After playing 4 hours we had only played 12 holes. We quit and drove off. The course is worth playing if you do mind 6 hour rounds.

Excellent affordable golf in Pinehurst

This is an excellent course with knowledgeable friendly staff. The course was a little dry due to drought conditions in the area but the facilities are first class. Great practice facilities and driving range. True links feel on many of the holes!

No water, cart path only - don’t play here until 2027 !!!

I was aware that the dam which was their only water supply was broken and that the course was dry and brown. What I didn’t know it was cartpath only in September because they were trying to protect the little grass

The guy in the pro shop never said a word to me when I checked in about it I found out when the GPS on the cart kept shutting down and would not let me off the cart path. Don’t bother coming here until 2027 when the new dam is supposed to be done.

Fun course

Course was in decent shape. A little dry, think they have a water issue since their dam broke on the lake. I would play again for the discount price, not worth regular $140 cost.

The fact that they are charging full price to play this course is criminal. The greens are pure but the fairways look like they haven't seen water since '07. They should honestly be giving out little hitting mats to take with you from hole to hole
