Chardon Lakes Golf Course
About
Chardon Lakes Golf Course opened as a nine-hole course in 1931. The original layout was designed by Bert Way, the same creative mind behind two of the popular golf courses in Ohio: Firestone North in Akron and Mayfield C.C. in Lyndhurst. The second nine was added in 1963. The golf course has a traditional layout with challenges that have withstood the test of the time. It has hosted several qualifiers for the Cleveland Open, most recently in 2001. Many famous players have tested their luck on the golf course, including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, whose score of 67 from the back tees is still the course record. Mature trees line Chardon Lakes Golf Course's fairways and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the large, undulating greens. There are also water hazards on 11 holes.

Great course
Always a fun round, very good layout, greens are nice. The
Rough is healthy and challenging. Food is good and the staff is great
One of the worst fall offs
This course has fallen off more than just about any other course in Northeast Ohio over the last couple of years, which is really unfortunate because I’ve always loved this course and its layout.
I’ve played here around 15 times since the start of 2026, so I’ve been able to see the conditions change firsthand. I first started noticing the decline in 2025. The greens weren’t nearly as fast, smooth, or green as they were in 2024. At first, I figured maybe 2025 was just an off year, but after playing here this many times in 2026, the course unfortunately seems to keep getting worse.
The greens are the biggest disappointment. This course used to be known for its difficult, super-fast, smooth, and extremely well-maintained greens. That was one of the things that made this course so much fun to play. Now they’re nowhere near the condition they used to be in.
The fairways have also gotten pretty rough. They’re longer than they should be, and almost every fairway seems to have muddy areas, bare spots, or missing grass. It’s honestly one of the saddest courses for me to see decline this much because I know how good it used to be.
I do want to give credit to the employees. Cody and the starter are wonderful guys—very genuine, friendly, and great to deal with. I have nothing but great things to say about the staff.
The pace of play today was actually great, but normally that’s another issue. A lot of the rounds I’ve played here have been around five hours for 18 holes.
I really hope they can turn things around because the layout is still great, and when this course was in good condition, it was easily one of my favorite courses in Northeast Ohio.
8 minute gaps in tee times
Until they change the tee time spacing go somewhere else on the weekends. It took 55 minutes to play two holes. After finishing the first hole in a blistering 25 minutes I looked up and counted 5 groups on the 2nd hole. One on the green, one group waiting in the fairway and three groups waiting at the tee box…absolutely unacceptable. I’m no math professor but I can still figure it that 25 minutes per hole with groups going off every 8 minutes is going to create a mess and ruin a lot of people’s weekends, especially those that can only golf one day a week. The worst golf experience I’ve had in the last 5 years.
Great course and conditions, sand traps were under maintenance
This is a great course but for some reason some sand traps were being repaired or not playable. I had played this course when it was wet and the traps were still playable but not this time. Other than that everything was great. cart paths in particular as well as the carts.
3 groups in front of us played a scramble
This wasn't your typical scramble where the course was closed
This was 3 groups of 4
Doing so
Called starter
He dealt with it
To no use
Only played 9
Received a raincheck
Becoming to typical of people these days and courses allowing it
Avoid playing here, highly recommend getting a membership somewhere that doesn't allow these shenanigans
Keep up the good work
Course was wet and cart path only but no problems because the carpets are fantastic. Even the wet sand was playable. I did not see too many people playing so the pace was great but I hope you make enough money to keep this up.
Course in good shape
Greens are super. Very pleasant round, staff there did a great job on the grounds after heavy rain. I played mid morning during the week and it moved quickly. Love CL.
First time @ Chardon Lake
Played 9 holes on a Sunday afternoon. Pace was great. Bit soggy on some tees but overall great round!
Super Slow Pace of Play and the Course is not in the Best Shape
The greens were slow, spongy, long and not smooth at all and at $71 i would except them to be much better.bbThey desperately needed to be cut and rolled. Their was also bare spots in the fairways and rough.. This course is living off its past and its future is a new shopping center or housing development. It really sucks and the slam as many people as possible on this course so expect to do a lot of waiting around.
Country club condition
Have played here for over 30 years. The conditions are the absolute best ever. In particular, the sand is pure, PGA level and the best in all the other courses around this area. Pace of play slowed down in the back 9, possibly some people cane in. But not a big deal. The prices have gone up but you get your value. Keep up the good work!
Do not play on the weekends
Overall not terrible . Would only play during the week. Tee times are 8 minutes apart for premium price on weekends, coupled with 3 hour pace of place for 9 holes. Had to cut the round short 2 holes due to lack of pace. Not one ranger seen on the course whole day. No beverage cart service all day on a Sunday 80+ degrees. Probably won’t be playing here again. Would not recommend.
