Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Terrible Maintenance
Fairways were your rough
Rough was deep rough
Greens are in the worse condition I’ve ever seen
Was not able to play due to bad Weather conditions
Sad to See How Far It Has Fallen
Used to come out here pretty frequently 3-4 years ago; it used to be a great value. Played with a few friends 7/25 at 7 AM, and I was appalled at how bad the conditions were. Greens were completely unplayable.- dirt patches, weeds, divots. There might’ve been 3 or 4 greens that weren’t abysmal. Will not ever be coming back
By far the worst course I’ve never played
For $65, this course is highway robbery. I knew going in that it wasn’t going to be anything special, and I thought I understood what I was getting into, but it was even worse than I expected.
The greens were in terrible shape, patchy, full of weeds, and covered in dry spots. On top of that, there isn’t a single water station anywhere on the course, which is pretty unacceptable, especially in the Texas heat.
The last time I played here, I said I’d never come back. I only gave it another chance because it’s one of the few places where you can still get a morning tee time with just a couple of days’ notice. After this round, I’d honestly rather not play golf at all than come back here.
Possibly the Worst Greens/Fairways in Houston
If you’d like to visit a chiropractor after your round, this is the place. Greens are probably the worst in Houston with bare patches and poana grass that’s consumed 98% of them. The fairways are incredibly uneven and bumpy. You’ll have to go extremely slow to avoid an aching back by the end of the round. I could only stand to play 9 holes today between the weather, fairways and greens. This is by far the worst condition I’ve seen this course in.
Disappointed
I so wish that they would improve the conditions on this golf course. I didn`t think it could get worse but the greens are basically unplayable. It`s close to home, the people are great, and the layout is fun.
I don`t think i`ll ever play here again unless it`s for free
Every green not worth putting on
Fairways incredibly uneven so hard to even drive your cart on.
Second class golfer
I use Golf Now when booking tee times. We showed up early and found less than 20 cars in the parking lot. We asked if we could start early and we were told no because we booked through Golf Now! I said, but there's nobody in site on the course. We were told they wouldn't let us start so that if walk up golfers showed up they could go out because they were paying customers. We were told the course wouldn't get paid by Golf Now.
Worst greens in Houston area
A course with a lot of potential, if anyone running it actually cared.
Played here on a Saturday with a group of four, $65 per person. I wouldn’t play this course again even if it were free. The fairways feel like driving over speed bumps the entire way down. The “greens” are basically low-cut fairway grass, and several of them have barely any grass at all.
Anyone who’s spent a summer in Houston knows how brutal the heat gets. With a 105 heat index and zero water stations on the course, conditions were rough. The cart girl came by exactly once the whole round — we felt like we’d been stranded in the desert and finally found water.
To top it off, the clubhouse doesn’t sell food. It’s not hard to throw some hot dogs on a griddle and hand out a bun. Save your money and play somewhere else.
Ugh
Course needs help. If you are trying to putt on any hole it's an absolute disaster. Either work on the course or close it down all together.
Why is it that after all the bad reviews that nothing is being done about this course? The City should intervene at some point…
Not worth the money
Customer service and club house is cool. There course is dog shi. Broken fairways, greens are not maintained (regular high grass is on the green), tee boxes are uneven and not maintained. They will schedule your tee time in the middle of a storm and still take your money to “maintain” this god forsaken course.
Nice Course Needs Help
Great Links layout, can hit Driver all day. Not enough money being put into the course especially the greens. Horrible. Fix the greens and this is one of the best tracks in Houston.
BARGAIN FOR THE PRICE
The first few holes the fairway is bumpy. thereafter nice course. we have had rain the last week fairway was in great shape
Worst Course Ever
First and last time playing this course. It's so bumpy and not well maintained. The tee boxes were terrible, and there's no water stations on the course but they don't allow coolers. Something needs to change here. There was a lady walking up and down the cart path. We asked the cart attendant why she was walking back and forth and she didn't know who the lady was or why she was there. The path was very close to the fairway and direction of the hole. It was concerning.
