Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
An Incredible Transformation
For many years, Bacon Park has not gotten the care it deserves...until now. The course has undergone a transformation from barely playable to wonderful. The tees, fairways and, even the greens, are in magnificent condition. Yes, magnificent. If the definition of magic is changing one thing into another then the superintendent and workers are true magicians.
Work in Progress
I feel compelled to write this review because the new management at Bacon Park is really making a concerted effort to make it a solid muni course. It is a work in progress and should be treated as such. I played here last season and it was a tough experience all around. Unfriendly golf shop, lack of balls for driving range, and super patchy greens. This season, the course is improving. It is not in championship condition, but the fairways are more consistently cut, several seriously problematic greens are on their way back, and the experience is trending up. For what you get, I happen to believe the price is fair. There’s work to be done, but the new management is clearly committed to a higher standard and it is evident everywhere. This is not a luxury golf experience, but it is not priced as such either. They are aiming for a respectable municipal round and I think they are on their way to making that a reality.
Course needs work
The course needs some work on many of the greens. It would be nice if they had a cart person selling refreshments.
Last time I played here the greens were trash but I must say it’s definitely getting better! Layout is fun and the staff is friendly but there’s no halfway house to get food/drinks and the pace of play is not great, old member blitz included. It’s a blitz, not the masters
Pretty decent shape
First time I’ve played Bacon Park in a few years and the course looks much better than before. The last time I played, there was more poa annua than Bermuda on the greens, and I heard that there was a time where the greens were so bad they might as well not have been there. I had no interest in playing the course in the condition I had seen it last, but I read the recent positive reviews and decided to try it for myself.
I was pleasantly surprised to find no poa dotting the greens. There are a few patches of poor areas on most of the greens, but during my round, I’d say they only came into my line play on 2 of the greens. Perhaps I was fortunate, but the greens really are very playable either way. They rolled smooth where you expect them to.
Tee boxes were all flat and had good grass. Excellent here.
Fairways were solidly grown in; no hardpan, but not quite full carpet. It had rained occasionally the week before I played, so this may have helped the fairways. I was very happy with what I saw. The rough is not particularly thick.
Very walkable course due to the design. Walked in 3:30 with an early Saturday morning tee time, though this was limited by the groups ahead of us. I suspect later tee times would be slower. Walking price of 28 is much better than 58 with a cart.
The course is pretty easy without much defense. Big greens and wide fairways. It takes a very poor shot to lose a ball. Not a tremendous amount to think about with course strategy, but maybe they just had the pins set to play easily for the weekend crowd. Several less than driver tee shots due to the short length of the course, but the couple long par threes are a pleasant change of pace mid round.
For other public course condition comparisons: Pretty comparable to Henderson overall - much better tee boxes and fairways here, but Henderson gets an slight edge on the greens solely due to not having as many areas missing grass. I don’t play Crosswinds due to how slow pace of play is there, so I can’t give a good comparison.
A birthday round to.me..
Course was in great shape and I even managed to snag the hit deal for.my birthday. Little disappointed there's no perk at the clubhouse tho... two complaints, and yes I've played here numerous time and know the course layout very well. First off, let's work.on the cart paths folks! I.can only assume yall are taking a kick back.from an influential chiropractor....
And there's nothing available at the turn. Course is played out so you dont return to the clubhouse for snacks or beverages. And to make matters worse there's no beverage cart keeping you hydrated or candy barred up..if you want something to eat after 9 u better bring it yourself.
And would ut hurt to put some water in the ball washers and a handicap???
Golf In The Park
Course was in great shape, comparable to many clubs in the area.
The layout was typical of a municipal course with limited space - faiways close to each other, greens and tee boxes same. In fact, the GPS warns at times to stay to the left or right to avoid tee shots as you approach a green. There were mostly straight fairways, very few doglegs and very little water.
Staff was friendly. Facilities were topnotch.
Open wide Course
Overall the course is decent and easy to play. I wich i could have more amenities like bar and stuff
Trying
Better than the last time I was out there. Tee box phenomenal shape. Fairways eh. Greens. Not bad if you don’t mind moving the ball to avoid they’re repairing the turf. Never waited once on anyone which was the highlight of the day. Overall over priced for what you get. If the price was $40 no problem but at $60 doesn’t feel worth it.
Muni Gold
The greens aren’t perfect, but they’re coming in well! They’ve done a lot of work to improve from the previous season. Course is a great Muni, great value and a Donald Ross design.
Pretty good
The greens are much improved. Everything else is in decent condition.
Bacon park sucks
Greens are terrible the valve is also terrible the pace of play is extremely slow no beverage cart and just underwhelming in every way possible
Getting better
It’s getting better. It’s inconsistent but it’s actually playable again. Hopefully the work on the greens continues and we see Bacon park get back to its glory! Keep up the good work.
Improving Conditions
I have watched Bacon Park deteriorate over the last seven years. However, the last two times I have played there I've seen significant improvements. The tees and fairways are in good shape. It was always the greens that were horrid. But, it is obvious, that some money and expertise are now part of the plan. The greens have been vastly improved. And the ones that are still poor are being attended to. Props to the course superintendent and the man or woman supplying the funds.
Nice older course
This is a fun course with very dry fairways and fast greens. A number of the greens are in need of repair but overall the course was in good shape. The staff was very friendly and it is a great value..
Could be so much better
Convenient location.Pro shop ok.Staff pleasant. Driving range fine. Add a couple of benches please.Chipping green is good. BUT Only 2 greens out of the front 9 were in playable condition. Restroom on course was foul.Would prefer better greens instead of newer golf carts.
Awesome course
This course is making some great improvements the greens are so much better and the golf carts are brand new this new management is doing great things for this golf course. The people always friendly and very helpful to getting you a T time . Can’t wait to see this place in the next six months it’s going to be super great!!
Terrible greens.
They have very nice new golf carts and the fairways are in decent shape but the greens with make you regret paying more than ten dollars to play there. There were a couple greens that had sand buckets in the middle of them. I think this course must be a tax right of for someone.
Nice Layout
Course was not bad. There were a couple greens with damage in local areas. It is early in the season and the conditions were okay. It was a nice day.
