Golfer Reviews
Hidden Gem
Within 5 mile radius there are a bunch of other courses. The only other course that can come close to Hilldale is Makray.
The balance between the course difficulty, course upkeep, staff friendliness, equipment, this place is a hidden gem. It is absolutely impeccable with rough being not too deep, fairways smooth and lush, and the greens are faster, which gives a bit of a balance to the game. Maybe its just me, but I thoroughly enjoy every moment on this course. Love it.
I will play here again
Great course with few challenges. The course was extremely wet due to rain. I will play here again hopefully when it’s dry.
Current conditions not great!
Played here several times before, with all this rain the course is in dire need of some work.
Greens were fine, but some of the fairways were pretty messed up.
Usually this place is in much better condition.
Stop all this rain!
terribe conditions
5 fairways gone worst ever
greens used to be gems now average
no rain checks only played 11 holes
should be 50 to play only good thing great pace of play made turn in 2 hours
Not Worth It
Swore off Hilldale in 2023 but I gave it another shot. I wish I took pictures but I could not believe how bad the course conditions were. I'm usually pretty lenient on things of this nature but the fairways were dead. Like dead dead. Tee boxes were horrible as well. Greens were decent. Bunkers were being worked on mid round by staff. Some of them had little sand in them which was.. interesting.
On top of all that, we teed off at 9:15 AM and did not get done until 2. Frustratingly slow round, which is not unusual for Hilldale. I reminded myself by hole 6-7 that this is why I stopped playing here. No ranger to move along these groups that were taking forever. Waiting 5-8 minutes on every tee box. Insane.
Positives:
Staff was way more friendly than previous times I've played Hilldale which was nice.
This place has great bones and it could be a great option in the area to pair with Bridges @ Poplar Creek and even Highland Woods. The reality is it's the 3rd best option of those courses. It's not about the money either. 65 bucks for a hot deal is fine. It's just clear, drought or no drought, the super is not interested in making this place better.
What happened here?
At the beginning of the season the place was in great shape. As the summer has progressed, literally everything about this place has gone DRASTICALLY downhill. It’s like the maintenance crew went on strike after June…the Marshalls treat the experienced golfers like it’s a $200/round course, and yet the younger beginners receive no warnings on pace of play or basic course etiquette.
Hilldale 8/3
Play was restricted to cart path only even though fairways were dry and there were no areas of standing water. My playing partners and I are elderly men and the round was quite taxing physcally,
Fairway Damage (Not worth $)
Unfortunately the fairways are not in good shape. Where there is grass on fairways, the grass is in good shape. There just seems to be a lot of damaged, dead spots. It looks like a disease problem to me, but it may be moisture.
Greens in decent shape. Course is playable. We just had to move some of our fairway shots to a live part of the turf.
For $83, I expect better. (To be fair, i did not ask for a discount after the round.)
Disappointing
It was cart path only day after a storm
Did not look like course was too wet it could have been 90 degrees and it would have been ok
Cart path only is tough especially for seniors
Nice Round
Course had some dried out spots, we have not had much rain in the area for a while. The 11th fairway had some dead grass but very wet areas. Overall the condition was good, but just some areas due to the weather. Pace of play was good
Slow Pace of Play
Friendly staff and decent course conditions. Pace of play was excruciatingly slow on a Sunday afternoon. Took us over 4hrs to get through 13 holes before calling it quits.
