Castle Bay Country Club
About
Although it is tucked away just north of Hampstead, Castle Bay Country Club will make you feel as though you've been transported to the British Isles. The golf course offers an authentic Scottish-links design that incorporates the natural wetlands of its coastal Carolina location, giving it a truly unique character. The landscape of rolling dunes is covered with native grasses but completely devoid of trees. Tall sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and there are also expansive waste areas, both characteristics that are true to its links nature. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Accurate shot placement is the key to doing well on this course and just like any seaside links layout, the coastal breezes play a prominent role. Much of the difficulty of the golf course comes from negotiating with the prevailing winds.

Great links course
While snowbirds in Topsail beach, we found the course. It’s a nice links course. Plenty of water and sand hazards to make you work for your game. Tough to read greens for me. For the time off year lots of dead grass, but over all a great place to play. New GPS carts and even a beer cart girl. Would recommend for sure. I’ll probably go again in the future.
Not a single mask anywhere....
Felt like 2019...I’m the only human in the entire course with a mask. None of the employees wore one inside or outside. You won’t see me there again for a while. Nice course tho, as long as you don’t mind being a single behind a 4 some w 2 push carts that make u watch every shot they take for 6 holes. I guess they’ve never heard of a ranger either.
New carts with GPS are nice but......
The new carts are nice with the yardage screens but:
1. We got warning notices even while we were on the cart path.
2. The cart was stopped and we had to back up even when in the fairway when it was not cart path only.
3. We kept getting warning notices that we were behind 10, 15, 20 minutes, etc even though we waited on every shot all day long. These warnings were aggravating. My foursome would recommend getting a Marshall out there if you are serious about having a decent pace of play on the weekends.
4. The green were very good and the staff excellent.
December Golf
Great course with a many challenging holes and pace of golf is excellent.
Beware of Zoysia
Greens were impeccable and really loved the layout! Another first-timer here and I agree that the next time out we will not let the zoysia grass, prevalent around Greenwich bunkers and between mounds off fairways, cause frustrating lost ball penalties. Other than that, a beautiful course that I will look forward to playing again.
Marsh course holds water
Played 5 rounds so I like the course. My one complaint is it holds water in the fairways. 4 of 5 rounds mud balls in fairways.
Fun course
Enjoyed playing, nice course to play and beautiful area. High-tech cart was a bit chatty, frequently beeping even while on the cart path.
Fun course, friendly staff
I always enjoy playing Castle Bay. The layout is very good with a combination of relatively easy to fairly challenging holes. The greens were just redone last year and have matured nicely. The fairways, rough and especially the tees can use some work. I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The range is short game area are the worst part of the overall package. Trying to find a decent piece of grass to practice from on the range can be next to impossible. The short game area is subpar, mostly due to lack of space. Overall, you will have a good time at Castle Bay. It can be a real challenge when the wind blows or on extra hot days due to the lack of trees and the links style architecture.
Always worth playing
This course is usually in great shape and today’s round was no exception ,had a great time enjoyed the course. But beware the hot deal I got from Golf now was actually more expensive when you include the taxes and fees than the regular rate at the course
Beautiful Day
It was almost a perfect day! As it was the first chilly day of the season, and quite windy, the course was almost empty mid day. I've played here before and the course is in the best condition I have ever played here. A few of the tee boxes may be a little overplayed but the staff is working on that by setting the tees in less used areas. The fairways were in very good condition, and the one that were a little wet were CPO. And the greens were also in great shape and rolled true. I noticed prices have increased , but they have new carts with excellent GPS systems, and the carts are programmed to not allow them to enter wet areas and CPO fairways, which will help keep the course in great condition. The staff, as always, were very friendly. Even the players are friendly and follow golf etiquette, as the group in front of me stopped and allowed me to play thru at the turn. A lottle less wind, and making a few birdie putts would have made this a perfect day.
First time playing in 10yrs.
At first, you may seem like this course is way over budget.
This course is very well maintained and the staff are more than friendly, even gave tips on certain holes.
The carts were very impressive, think they should mention that on website, with yardage tracking, side coolers, etc
Already scheduled our next tee time and hopefully keep it lower with the coastal winds.
Nice course when options are limited in the area
Great fun track with not a lot of trouble other than water. Good conditions other than being a bit wet (as most courses in a flood basin are). Would play again!
Greens not receptive
Course in great shape overall. Greens where smooth and true. Only negative greens where not receptive. Hit a perfect high shot to green and it bounds off back.
