Castle Bay Country Club
About
Although it is tucked away just north of Hampstead, Castle Bay Country Club will make you feel as though you've been transported to the British Isles. The golf course offers an authentic Scottish-links design that incorporates the natural wetlands of its coastal Carolina location, giving it a truly unique character. The landscape of rolling dunes is covered with native grasses but completely devoid of trees. Tall sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and there are also expansive waste areas, both characteristics that are true to its links nature. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Accurate shot placement is the key to doing well on this course and just like any seaside links layout, the coastal breezes play a prominent role. Much of the difficulty of the golf course comes from negotiating with the prevailing winds.

Amazing course
This course is by far the best course in the Wilmington, NC area. For the price it is a top end course with challenging holes, great atmosphere, and tons of nature. Very pleased with this course and this will be my go to course for now on
It’s ok
I’ve played here a few times and the only time I will is if I can’t play anywhere else. For $70 a person I’d rather drive an hour and a half away to play thistle dunes or anywhere else in north Myrtle but for being somewhat local the course is ok. I like the layout. The pace of play can be god awful sometimes 5 hour rounds. The grass is hit or miss if it’s good or not in certain areas. Course floods and retains water so don’t play after a rain storm. Being a scratch golfer the course plays very easy even from the tips
Came to “play”.
My experience with Castle Bay is 75% positive. From the cart attendant to the Pro shop attendant I felt welcomed and valued as a customer. When I went to the first tee that positive experience took a nosedive. The starter was on some kind of power trip, was rude and unreasonable. I had a 9:08 tee time. When I approached the first tee at 8:57 am there was a threesome waiting. We introduced ourselves and they said they had the 9:15 am tee time. They asked if I would like to join them. I agreed. The starter then demanded I move to a cart with the other group. I refused. He became loud and again demanded I move to the other cart. I said No. I explained I had recently recovered from Covid and was not comfortable riding with someone I possibly could infect. He became belligerent and started cursing. I told him I had the 99:08 tee time and would proceed as a single. After hitting my tee ball, I headed out. He came chasing me, cursing and threatening to call the police. I encouraged him to do so. I wanted him to explain why he called the police on a patron who had paid and had a legitimate tee time. He banned me from the course and used extreme profanities. I ignored him and proceeded to play on. The threesome with the 9:15 tee time caught up with me a few holes later. Each remarked that the starter was on a power trip and they had never experienced someone being treated so disrespectfully as I had been by this person.
After the adrenaline rush settled down I played on. The course is a true links style and when the wind came up the challenge got tougher. In conclusion, without the starter being a problem I would rate my experience higher. He, the starter, needs to be fired. How hard is it to be nice to people who come to play?
Good course
Course was in good shape . Greens were a bit furry
and slow , but very receptive. All in all it was a nice day , I would play it again .
A beautiful round
Gotta love this place. Great links style course lay out. Pretty challenging to boot. Hands down some of the nicest staff I've met. Great clubhouse, driving range, chipping area and putting green. You will not beat this course for the price. I will be back without a doubt. Looking forward to breaking 80 here ⛳️
Off season
Good course, for will be .much better in the sprong/summer. My day was cold a day windy.
Course layout is nice. Played from green tees for 70 and older. Reachable greens. 4 hours and 40 minute round. A little slow, but quite busy. Had to wait for a cart to become available. Lack of rain made fairways have tight lies. Overall was a good time. Look forward to when fairways are lush and green.
