Castle Bay Country Club
About
Although it is tucked away just north of Hampstead, Castle Bay Country Club will make you feel as though you've been transported to the British Isles. The golf course offers an authentic Scottish-links design that incorporates the natural wetlands of its coastal Carolina location, giving it a truly unique character. The landscape of rolling dunes is covered with native grasses but completely devoid of trees. Tall sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and there are also expansive waste areas, both characteristics that are true to its links nature. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Accurate shot placement is the key to doing well on this course and just like any seaside links layout, the coastal breezes play a prominent role. Much of the difficulty of the golf course comes from negotiating with the prevailing winds.

Nice Layout, Friendly Staff
I've played Castle Bay a number of times now. It's well worth it if you're in the area
Well maintained
After a storm yesterday, the fairway was soggy in some area. In spite of the wet condition, the green was dry and rolling well
Castle Bay 6/2/25
Staff were friendly at check-in and got a rate better than expected. Range balls were included. Paired with three other golfers, all of whom were excellent to play with. Pace was very good, overall very good experience.
CB 6/2/25
Enjoyed the round and the playing partners. The four of us had never met. Course played as expected and pace of play was good. Course is open and thus good for a wide range of abilities. Would definitely recommend, a great bargain for seniors.
Great course great staff
Visiting from New York and i booked last minute and it was a delight. Course in great shape and Mr Caster in the pro shop was so kind and friendly. Can't speak highly enough of the course and my experience.
Castle Bay Hampstead Must Play
Castle Bay is a solid track and one of my favorites to play in the Hampstead area. The starters and mostly friendly although sometimes require two in a cart and sometimes clearly not. This was strange. Overall fun.
The Bay is in great shape!
Long time customer and Castle Bay is probably in the best shape it's been in a long time. Some tee boxes are not perfect but overall the course is very enjoyable. Some of my playing partners commented negatively about the permanent "alternate" hole locations but they don't bother me...
A used to be nice slow course.
This is clearly a course that used to be nice. The layout is fun and the staff were very nice. Unfortunately the course conditions were not good. The greens have at least three types of grass in them and are bumpy. The tee boxes are thin of grass and uneven.
Added to this was a pace of play that was fine on the front and came to a screeching halt on the back nine. When I asked the ranger what happened he said it was “groups were slow at the turn”. We left after the 15th hole and passed 8 groups on the final three holes including 3 on the reachable final hole.
Very good golf course. I went to the course as a single player but was paired up with three others and had a blast. Will definitely play the course again when in the area.
Tricky but fun
Consistent playing surface every time. Challenging layout makes you use your whole bag. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s always my go to for a nicer course.
Great course conditions
Greens were very consistent.
Ranger also assisted with keeping my pace quick since I was a single player. Clubhouse attendant was also very friendly!
Had a 12:20’tee time for a single
I arriving at 11:50. Went into club house . I tried to check in using my name , the gentlemen kept telling me I was already checked in and what someone from the Monayan group checked me in. I don’t know anyone from monayan group I explained . They then said I needed to hurry up and get my stuff to ride with the monayan team. Again , I figured I would ride by myself not with someone else. They said , nope you need to ride with your group . Again , I was visiting from out of town and didn’t know anyone . Needless to say , I left . Perhaps it was all on the up and up , but too many weird comments was enough . I played later in the day at a different course .
Imoroved
In better shape than the past. Greens very good for public facility. Tee boxes pretty beat up but playable. Staff was helpful, no Marshall pressure, although we were ahead of pace anyway. No on icourse beverage service.
Second best. Course near Topsail Island. Of note the backside is nearly entirely over or around water. Hazard to either carry, or left/ right of fairway, be prepared to lose a few balls without local knowledge. GPS on carts are equipped with geo fencing, will lock up or turn off if you drive to restricted area WITHOUT warning chime.
Condition
The course is in great condition and they are constantly working on it to keep it that way!
