Nice Layout
Had been intrigued by this course for a while given the designers involved. About an hour away from me in Charlotte so found some time on a Sunday afternoon to get out to Wadesboro.
Conditions are a little rough around the edges but given what I paid, it’s not a big deal. Just keep it somewhat straight and you’ll be fine. I walked 18-front 9 was a pretty simple walk with a little up and down and second 9 was more of a hike. It has been raining a lot here lately and has been cold so there were a few soggy spots. You can see that they are working on the course and removing vegetation and trees to open it up a little which is good to see and will help with some of the conditioning trouble spots. Cart paths are pretty rough so be careful with that. I think it was worth the drive from Charlotte to satisfy my curiosity and I’d like to come back in the summer to see the continued improvements and hopefully it will be a little drier then as well. Cool to see the different layouts of the front 9 versus the back 9.
3 Stars does not do justice
First time golfer, read the reviews on course prior. Staff was said to be friendly... couldn’t be more true! Staff was extremely encouraging of having fun and playing well. On the day I played, cart paths were extremely destroyed due to renovations. I was told that. However make sure you got both hands on the wheel... seriously. Overall. Great course, I played alone, was very easy course, layout is very easy in my opinion for a high handicap golfer. I’m usually a 110-100 golfer. I shot 95 with two 8’s. A good drive will leave you a 8-9-PW into the green. Enjoy the time there.
Awesome staff...super friendly and accommodating.
It was our first time playing the course and it started with my group arriving late. Confusion on our end in booking caused us to head in the opposite direction at the start of the day. The staff was very understanding of our error and encouraged us, over the phone, to go ahead with the round.
The greens were in surprisingly good shape considering the time of the year, as were the fairways, and play moved along extremely well. There are many elevation changes with hazards coming into play on a regular basis which is something my group enjoys. Only a couple of times do houses show up near a fairway...something else my group looks for when choosing a course to play.
The paths are considerably rough in some places and are in need of some repair but the carts are new and well maintained, which helps keep things comfortable.
It is a bit of a drive from the Charlotte area so ride with someone you can tolerate for the additional time you will be confined with him/her/them.
Keep your expectations reasonable and enjoy the experience of playing a course that got its start in the 30's. I has a very nostalgic feel that we all experienced...it gave us all a relaxed feeling. So much so, none of us even checked our phones during the round...something that never happens.
The very reasonable rate we found on a deal time (half to a third of some 'city' courses) combined with the overwhelming friendliness of the staff means we will return again.
Great time
Great time
Drove an hour to get there and was very happy we did. Lots of renovations going on, But did not affect play at all. Extremely friendly staff! Would definitely recommend to a friend. Can’t wait to see it when it’s complete
A diamond in the rough
Other reviews about the conditions of the cart paths are spot on. They really do need work, But don't let that stop you from trying this course. From an architectural standpoint, the only weak hole in my opinion was hole No. 1. I particularly enjoyed the layout from holes 4 onward. Lots of false fronts that made you aim for the back of the greens. The front side is Donald Ross. The back side, I was told, is Gary Player. Both sides had some really fantastic hole designs. The Par 3s are particularly memorable.
The workers in the club house were super friendly! Can't have asked for a warmer welcome as First Timers. The one thing I HATE about online reviews is that some reviewers compare a sub $30 green fee course against a $100 course and knock the heck out of the lower priced course for conditions, or this or that. Some reviewers let a bad round spoil their reviews as well. Yes this course needs work, No doubt about that. But it really is a diamond in the rough! I can imagine what this course must have looked liked in its heyday but it still has a lot of charm.
Best bang for your buck
Best course at this price point in the area. Challenging and fun for under $25 on weekdays. As others have noted the cart paths are the worst part of the course, though I have no other complaints. Staff is excellent as well. We have been coming here for a couple months and even in that short time we have seen it improve drastically.
Fun course
When this course gets all the way right it’s going to be a gem. The cart paths are the worst things about this course. The green are nice, the fairways are okay but the layout is awesome can’t wait to play again as it is constantly improving. The new owners have it going in the right direction.
Tale of two Nines
There’s a distinct difference in front and back 9’s. Front is more open , back is tighter with a lot of elevation changes. Several blind tee shots on the back. Take the time to drive ahead to have a look before hitting off the tee. Cart paths are rough in several places.
Potential to be a good course
The course is still in transition. It does have great potential with improvements. The staff is super friendly and they have made several steps towards improvement but there is still a ways to go.
Overall a nice layout. The cart paths need definite improvement but the group is working hard. I would play again but only at reduced rates until the course turns around.
Diamond in the Rough!
This course is on it way to greatness. This course is like a home with great views, and great structure. All it needs is a bit of TLC. The owner of the course and his team are doing a great job polishing this diamond. Although its not complete yet, its worth going along with them on this journey.
Great!
Great course. It’s a work in progress and with that being said the greens could use a little more work. But for the money you can’t beat this course
Great Value
Drove an hour from home to get away from our home surroundings we have been trapped in! Was greeted at the door by one of the owners of the course. The personal service and concern for our well being was evident throughout our time at the course. It is a great lay out and it was very playable! It has some rough edges and the cart paths are great for off roading! But it is a good course with a tremendous staff who are truly tuned in for helping the golfer have a great experience!
Great Second Choice
The course was not our first choice. The first choice course overbooked and left us high and dry. We quickly booked this course and made our way out there. The course was a lot of fun to play. challenging and very interesting holes for sure. The greens were rough and played much slower than we were used to. Some of the sand traps had more rocks than sand in them or no sand at all, instead they were clay. The only thing that might keep me from coming back is how rough the cart paths were. Just riding the cart paths almost felt like you would tear up the cart.
Needs TLC
I enjoyed the course layout. It was a fun design and the greens were very challenging. On the negative side. The course I hear is under new management. It is in need of lots of money to fix the fairways, bunkers and cart paths. The greens rolled ok and were the best part of this course. Maybe with some love, it will continue to improve.
Transitioning to a Must-Play Course
Twin Valley was as tough as Donald Ross likely designed it to be. Study the layout beforehand or have an app to help you visualize your distances, because you will pay for guessing especially on the 16th tee box; the drop-off and thick rough make it challenging, but extremely fun. Also, the greens are goldi-locks' "just right" with adequate break to make it interesting for the weekend golfer.
Ownership has recently changed hands, and the new folks are on their way to getting it back in great shape. There were some fairways that were dried or bald on one side, but all of the tee boxes and greens were in great shape. I have no doubt they will have it ready for the spring/summer 2020 season. Much of the cart paths were temporary clay/gravel as they have plans to repave. There was a decent driving range (that I didn't use), and they plan on adding a putting green as well.
The staff were all extremely friendly, and they make you feel like they want you there. Pro Shop was stocked with everything you would need before, during, and after a round. Hot dogs were quality grade actually - not school cafeteria like you would expect.
Pro-tip: We stopped by a place called Peaches -n- Cream on the way back to Charlotte for some peach ice cream in homemade waffle cones. Highly, highly recommend the stop.
Horrible Greens
It seems like this course has been around for a long time. There has been hardly any work done to maintain anything from Tee to Green. I play at least twice a week in the CHARLOTTE metro area. This was not worth the trip at all. Totally disappointed, there was nothing good to say. Greens were horrible, not cut or rolled at all. Fairways were not cut and there was grass growing out of the bunkers! There were hardly any decent Cart paths. Definitely not worth the 60 mile drive from Charlotte for this.
Unknown Gem!
This is absolutely the most hospitable course I’ve EVER played. Due to rain we were unable to finish and were met at our cart with a rain check. The owners are both friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We can’t wait to return to play the full course. Much work is being done to the course and the plans for the future sound exciting. We will definitely play here many more times in the future.
