Cooks Creek Golf Club
About
Cooks Creek Golf Club (previously known as Raintree South Golf Club) is bordered by Little Walnut Creek on one side and the Scioto River on the other, providing a scenic setting that is ideal for a round of golf. The course is a certified Audubon Sanctuary and there is also a Blue Herron rookery on site. Opened in 1993, the golf course is relatively young but it has already established a reputation for being one of central Ohio's best public courses. Local architects Michael Hurzdan and Dana Fry designed the course with the assistance of John Cook. Cooks Creek has two completely unique nines that offer two different sets of challenges. The diverse layout requires careful strategy and it will also test your shot-making abilities. With two bodies of water serving as neighbors, water definitely plays a role on the golf course.

Tee Boxes (This is one of the tee boxes with actual green on it, rather than just pure dirt) Photo submitted by ScEGDxKM8Z1A9tQ5q63k on 10/13/2019

This was a fairway, patches of dirt like this were extremely common throughout. Photo submitted by ScEGDxKM8Z1A9tQ5q63k on 10/13/2019

Nice layout. Can be enjoyed by all.
I know my stars don't jibe with my description, but I really don't care too much about the food(my hot dog was pathetic) so the play-ability and design is what I like. Some of the greens on the front have dead strips of grass all across them caused by a leaky mower. The periphery, such as fences, cart paths, and bridges are going downhill fast since the new ownership. I don't think they have put any money into infrastructure since the purchase. I hope they do. because I really like the course.
Good course
Some of the green was damaged but course is always in good safe.
Good News Coming?
This was my first time back to "Raintree" since 2008. The layout and natural beauty were exactly as I remember. The conditions.... not so much. For grabbing a $14 deal on golfnow, I really won't complain too much. But, there wasn't a bunker that was playable on the entire course (given the rain, understandable, but still) and weeds were creeping up on the tee boxes. Fairways were great, but a few greens had "stripes" from equipment leaking something the killed the grass.
The best news of the day was when we left, the young man who was cleaning our carts out said that John Cook himself had just visited in the prior few days. The rumor is he's in talks to repurchase the course back. This would be fantastic, as I have no doubt he'd return it back to the condition that made Cooks Creek standout in the first place. Let's hope this happens!
Course is making a comeback
The new management has done wonders with the course itself. Fairways and greens much better than last few years. We had taken it off our list but decided to try it this year, pleasantly surprised. Cart paths, railings, club house still need a lot of work due to past neglect, but they appear to be putting money and effort into the course itself for now,, well done !
Going Downhill. Why??
I have played this couse several times in past years. The course conditions are not to the same level when it was Cooks Creek. Last round: Greens are in poor condition. Tee boxes not mowed in awhile. Fairways were ok.
5 years ago, this was a must play course in the area. 4 and 1/2 stars at minimum. Today, it would be lucky to get 3 stars. Disappointing to see a great course let go.
Sinking ship
I would recommend you save your money no matter what deal you may receive. I placed tee time 2 days prior, we received great deal of rain and this course always floods. Once we arrived only holes 8 to 16 were open. Why not contact me via email? Then would not offer anything to make us stay. Pro shop is poorly stocked. Only 1 type of ball for sale and 1 shirt! Then ordered beer at the "turn" and told they had no ice! Wow, I told worker that doubt I would ever come back and he said "Oh well!" Sad really because it is a great layout. Terrible experience for our group.
A huge letdown!
Showed up to the clue about 45 min early to git the range and putting greens (tee time at 12:40). I was told they didn't have any range balls, and told I could up see if anyone left any. No one was working the range so that explains the shortage.
Pace of play was horrible. We were waiting 15 min at every tee box. We were a 2-some. Grand total of time to play 18 holes was a little over 5 hours 15 min.
Course has been changed and not for the good. Greens were beat up and tee boxes not cut tight.
It's a shame what has happened to this course
This was my first time playing the course since it underwent new ownership last season. For 5 or so years I played in a league out here and normally on weekends throughout the summer. The layout is first class. I was shocked at how far the course has gone down hill. The clubhouse is completely empty. When I say empty, think a cash register, 5 hats and a box of used balls. We waited 10 minutes before we were greeted in the clubhouse. There was no starter. There was no direction given on when to tee off and what the order was. After watching everyone stand around we just went to the tee and teed off.
The course is hardly a shell of what it was 2 years ago. The tee boxes were shaggy, bare and at times had weeds growing on them. The fairways had bare spots throughout with weeds once again mixed in. The rough was a joke. There wasn't rough. For the most part it was burned out and was simply mud with weeds growing.
I will give the course some credit. The greens were in very solid shape. Smooth, fairly quick and did not have many ball marks.
Overall I was extremely disappointed to see such a beautiful course in such disrepair.
Memories
I love the layout of this course. Having played it many times when it was known as Cook's Creek, it now is a shadow of itself. Tee boxes are beat up, traps are very poor and course maintenance is lacking. All that said, the greens were great and I would definitely play it again.
Deteriorating
Nice track but maintenance is lacking. Starting to show significant wear but to be expected for $25. Could be a very nice course with some needed attention. Traps are very inconsistent. It would be nice if players would repair their ball marks. The greens were good otherwise. Staff was quite friendly. Play was SLOW.
Ghost
I wish these folks luck. I've always loved Cook's Creek, but the course is definitely a shadow of it's former glory days. The front nine has taken a lot of water damage and the fairways are a bit burned out. The front nine was in much better shape. They're going to need a lot more business to fund the upkeep the course deserves.
It's still a hidden gem in Central Ohio, but...
It's still a hidden gem in Central Ohio, but under new management, and they have not invested any money into the club house ( it is bare. You can't even buy golf balls. And at this course, you need a lot of them!), or into the pathways and walkways to climb the elevated tee boxes that need repaired desperately. However, the course was in fantastic condition and was stunning.
I'd pay way more money to play at Rain Tree South (previously Cooks Creek) if the facilities were in better shape.
Best value in the state of Ohio
This course faces many challenges given its proximity to so much water and the amount of rain the area has received this year, but despite it all the course is in excellent shape. Golf is down overall, and all courses face monetary issues but this one has been doing all it can to get through it. I play here often and the layout is excellent. The course it difficult, but choosing the proper tees makes it a great challenge to any golfer. The fairways and greens are always well maintained and at times the weather gets the best of it for a few days until the staff can work on it. Previous complaints about bunkers are understandable, but when it rains every single day, bunkers are difficult to maintain. Bunkers have recently recieved a good deal of attention and many are getting new sand in the coming days I was told, including the practice area bunkers. The course has an excellent range as well. The pro style layout will force you to think and the greens and their protection by greenside bunkers are almost every hole provide a great round of golf. This course has cut its prices even though its website does not reflect that. My advice, call and book a time and try it out, very few people play this course and decide not to return, it is simply too nice not to. Considering that this course charges the same rates as other within minutes of it, and it is many times better, how can you not play here?
Great course for the price
It's a beautiful course..well maintained.. An excellent price for the challenging course.. Will play it more often now that it is more affordable.
Great for the price!
If you can get a golfnow deal on this course it is a real treat! Definitely will be back!
GOOD COURSE
Course was in good shape. Greens were relatively fast and ran true. Price was good at $27.00Fairways wide and easy to hit.
Great course! Excellent price!
In the top 50 public courses in the country in Golf Digest. Well worth the $27. You won't be disappointed. Visually mesmerizing.
Beautiful layout of course
Staff was very friendly and accomdating. We had our special needs son with us who lkes to ride in the golf cart and tend to the flag, and the staff were very kind and generous to allow him with us. Played midday on a Saturday, and the pace of play come to a halt the back nine as groups ahead of us starting playing 5-somes and best balls and no ranger was out making sure players were keeping up. There were at least 3 empty holes ahead of this group, and we had up to 3 foursomes all waiting on the tees on the last 5 holes. Took 3 1/2 hours to play back nine, and I'm surprised at the caliber of this course that that kind of thing is allowed to happen, especially on a Saturday when the course is crowded. Other than that frustration, very nice course.
Great course!
Went out with a buddy this morning and we were surprised at how amazing this course was! Course was in excellent condition but the bunkers could use some work. It is a challenging course from the tips, and each hole gives spectacular views and elevation changes. lots of water on the course as well! We will definitely return for another round soon! It's a steal for $27!
Good Experience
First time at the course would go back for sure had a few good challenging holes
