Black Bear Golf Club
About
Black Bear Golf Club is part of the Crystal Springs Resort, which offers six other courses, though, it's hard to remember they're connected since they each offer a distinct character and look. Unlike Ballyowen and Crystal springs, two of the resort's most well known courses, Black Bear has more of a parkland layout. The course tumbles across rolling hills covered with trees, which come into play along the undulating fairways and greens. Water only comes into play on three holes but there are a whopping 65 bunkers coming into play. It's challenging but not frustrating. Both low and high handicappers will enjoy not only the golf course but also the beautiful scenery. Black Bear is one of the best values in the area and has garnered a strong local following.

Hole #7 Photo submitted by NiceBalls on 10/24/2013
Is this the green or the bunker I'm putting on?
This course in the spring is nice. Come back in August and you will regret it. All the greens were absolutely terrible! 80% of every green was complete dirt and sand, ball marks, waste of time trying to putt on. Grass clippings all over the place, the fairway was more of a first cut and the rough was worse than a US Open course. How they can charge anything over $20 is beyond me. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND THE TRIP!
Greens
The course can be really nice but due to weather this year 8 or 10 greens are in terrible conditions. The discount rates make up for that but you can really putt on some of the greens
the coarse would be better if the putting green was mainained.
The coarse has nice views but the putting green was not maintained at all. There was no grass near the flag. The coarse should be definitely discounted.
This course is a disaster - stay away
I normally would not complain about a course that is a little out of shape, but Black Bears greens are so destroyed this course should be closed. The only warning we got was that the greens had been aerated. At least 1/2 of the greens were unplayable and have been destroyed. Literally dirt and sand with no grass. They offered a small discount because of the aeration. It was still a major rip-off as the course was unplayable. Black Bear was completely unprofessional on this one. Stay away from this course
6-7 of the greens are UNPLAYABLE !!!
STAY AWAY !!! 6-7 of the "greens" do not exist as a golf-able surface for any location on this planet including Siberia in winter. Hope Black Bear get this fixed because I have played there for the past 8 years and it's sad to see this happen.
This course is usually in pristine condition and very challenging. However, course had at least 15 burnt out greens.
Golf Now should have been notified and posted that approximately 15 greens are completely sand and burnt out.
Patrons should have been warned.
This course is very challenging and beautiful. However, the greens situation was very poor.
Greens were in very poor condition.
I did get a call after booking on Golfnow that the greens were aerated with the option to cancel. I chose to play, the greens were aerated, but about 7 of them had no grass on them at all.
condition is very bad
all the way very bad green is bad too should be close and need maintained the course
Greens Terrible
I like the course seems like a great layout. On 8/12/13 when I played the Course MOST of the greens were awful something killed most of the grass and greens covered with sand and bouncy I'm sure they are trying to repair the damage but will probably take awhile curiosly the ones visible from clubhouse in good shape
Nice course. Interesting layout. Play when the greens look like the practice green.
Terrible greens condititions comprised of a mix of sand and tufts of grsss. Notifying players before they pay would be a good idea.
Greens need work!
The overall course was in great shape, but the greens were being aerated and were in horrible condition. As one employee put it 'I'd say 1/3 are absolutely horrible, and I wouldn't call them greens. the other 2/3 are playable'. I can not emphasize how bad they were. The overall course was nice, but I wont play again for a few years there until the greens come back.
Played there on 8/10/13.** I am rating my experience given the conditions when I played.**
Positives: Secluded feeling once you pull in off of Rt. 23. Friendly staff, nice pro shop, cool little wood burning BBQ at the turn, driving range ($5 for about 30 balls) although hitting off a mat, course layout is great. We played from the blues - white tees may be too short a course for some. Fairways and tee boxes, although not cut, were in good shape. On-course beverage cart was well stocked and always near-by.
Negatives: Greens, unfortunately due to the recent heat wave, are pretty much non-existent. Some of the greens right now are essentially just sand. All of them are aerated. There are a few greens that are somewhat putt-able. To their credit, they only charged us $42 per person with cart on a Saturday at 2:30. It was cart-path only, and this is by far the worse course I've ever had to play on with this rule enforced. If you're in the right rough and the cart path goes left along the fairway, you may have a LONG walk to your ball. I would not play it again under those conditions given the opportunity to get a refund. $9 for a small burger and $3 for a bottle of water. Felt that was a bit over-priced.
I would give Black Bear a 4 or 5 star rating once they get their greens back and I get a chance to play when a cart-path only rule is not in effect. The layout of the course is really fun. Just tight enough to be challenging, but not too much so to make it a long day for average golfers. Greens could also be spectacular.
Good layout with high price tag.
This is great track that was a lot of fun. First time playing this crystal springs course because it is always so expensive on weekdays. I have now played 3 of the 7 course and everytime it's after they airate. Witch is a shame, I would love to play this course more, just can't afford these rich man green fees on weekdays.
repairing all greens, cannot put
This course is fine except they are repairing all the greens, have a lots of sand on them and have gigantic holes all over the greens. You could hardly put. It does not worth even $20. They are charging all seniors 50% off weekdays starting yesterday.
terrible greens
This course had a severe insect problem with greens. No attempt to give information VIA INTERNET or inform GolfNow.
Making a time and going to course...a fair distance...to find out that 13 out of 18 greens were raked mud was ridiculous. They did with very little fanfare take a very few dollars off the price when signing in....but they hardly related the truth when paying....the $80 fee should have been reduced to $40...the unhappy and disgruntled golfers come around the turn...and then after finishing...in the restaurant area...the complaints were loud and many. Under good conditions, this is a fine course. On 8/4/2013 it was a pity to see.........and pay for.
Terrible green condition
I have played the course before so I am aware of how this course should really look. Terrible, terrible green conditions. Not advertised or informed to any of the players. Many complaints heard by players amongst themselves after 5 to 6 holes. Approximately 13 out of 18 holes green situation terrible. A minimal and I emphasize minimal credit was given from the entire price when signing up and paying in the golf house. Much groaning was heard from the players as they exited the 18th green and sat in the coffee area. The entire green section of The day's golf game was abrogated. The $80 charge should have been reduced for everyone at the counter, initially at the counter to $50. Also, there were many many pitch marks unrepaired in the greens. There was no attempt by marshals to educate and encourage players to repair. A large amount of education is needed by the marshaling service to help players maintain the course.
Junk
Do not go to this place! I played the course on 8/4/13 and their greens were garbage. Tee box, fairway, rough everything were fine except the green! No grass on the green period! Plus, the superintendent must have mis-judged the irrigation system. The greens are flooded and the smell?? Fungus is what it is.. I would not recommend this course at all.
Not Happy
Booked on golf now for a good deal 59$ for black bear was good. Upon arriving we were told that the reason it was a good deal was due to the condition of almost half the courses greens. Unputtable. Diseased. The condition of the course otherwise was also poor. Calling management to complain. Do not recommend!
