Black Bear Golf Club
About
Black Bear Golf Club is part of the Crystal Springs Resort, which offers six other courses, though, it's hard to remember they're connected since they each offer a distinct character and look. Unlike Ballyowen and Crystal springs, two of the resort's most well known courses, Black Bear has more of a parkland layout. The course tumbles across rolling hills covered with trees, which come into play along the undulating fairways and greens. Water only comes into play on three holes but there are a whopping 65 bunkers coming into play. It's challenging but not frustrating. Both low and high handicappers will enjoy not only the golf course but also the beautiful scenery. Black Bear is one of the best values in the area and has garnered a strong local following.

Hole #7 Photo submitted by NiceBalls on 10/24/2013
Greens were in bad shape, nice course otherwise
They said they aerated at the beginning of the season (probably 3-4 weeks ago), but it seemed much more recent than that while out on the course. The course itself is very well maintained and in great shape, but the greens were absolutely horrid. Not a single putt from anyone in my group held its line, and any chance at making anything longer than let's say 10 feet was purely luck. I plan on playing here again since it is fairly local and a good deal, but I won't be back until the greens are back in shape.
Great layout
The course has a great layout but the greens still need a couple more weeks to come back from repairs and the aeration.
Great course
Would have been 5 stars but the greens were being aerated and that was not acknowledged when I booked my tee time. Other than that, great course.
Has some challenging holes.
Greens were aerated a week ago, however it was noted when I booked my round. Some courses don't let you know in advance. Good condition for this time of year with the weather we had.
Great Surroundings
The greens had been aerated 2 weeks before, so the greens weren't in great shape. Fairways need a little work too, but the course itself is very nice. I'm sure once the weather is good for a while the course will be in teriffic shape. It's put in a beautiful area. Very quiet. Great surroundings. Loved the course and look forward to going back sometime.
Overall, Nice course!
I was very pleased for the money but, I was disappointed to find out the greens were just aerated a week ago and there were a lot of sand on them as well. Couldn't putt at all. Usually Golf Now let's me know before I book the round on the icon symbols below of the times...This time booking the tee time it didn't warn me.
Just aerated
The tee boxes are in great shape along with fairways. The greens where just aerated so they where a little tougher along with several greens under severe repair.
challenging, but fair layout. played the Blue tees
First golf of the year and very enjoyable. Black Bear rates in the top five out of about 30 courses I play each year.
Very forgiving, short course
An accurate tee shot will set you up well on any hole. If you find yourself in the rough or a sand trap, a par save is not out of the question. The greens were aerated and it was the first weekend the course was open, so it wasn't in very good shape. However, this course is one of my favorites in the mid-end summer and early fall months.
green in bad condition
the course is in poor condition, the green are full of leaves and never clean. won the par three contest but never received the free round of golf as promised.
Scenic course.
Well maintained for the time of year I played although bunker sand was hard pack and full of leaves. Otherwise a good course and would definitely play there again.
Bad Greens, Otherwise Nice
The greens are in the process of being rebuilt, and have been re-sodded. So they need to heal. Otherwise it's a pretty layout in the woods. Other problem was pace of play, took about 5:30 to play on a Friday around lunchtime.
Drainage and Greens
I've played this course a few times and I note that drainage is an issue. I note that many shots from the fairway are from wet muddy soil which affects the shots. The greens range from good to fair. There are spots of repair on many of the greens and some are cut shorter than others. Some allow for rather consistent ball roll but others do not as a result of their condition.
Overall it was a good experience as I like the slope and the challenge of keeping the ball in the fairways if you have any hope of a decent scoring opportunity.
Lots of fun , elevation changes and water holes , great place
Nice Staff , very helpful . Course was in great condition.
The grill after the round was just as good .
Highly recommended .
Thank you
This course has great features.
Black Bear Golf Course is very good to excellent.
Course conditions is very good.
Course was a lot of fun
My wife and I played this course a week after Hurricane Sandy hit our area and all things considered the course was in really good condition. Fairways were mowed and tee boxes were nice.
We both got serious about golf this year and are high handicappers and we found this course to have a great balance between challenge and forgiveness with some straight forward holes as well as some blind tee shots, doglegs and nicely placed bunkers.
Our only complaint was that some greens had a lot of un-repaired ball marks which did cause us some trouble on a few puts.
For the $16 green fee, it was an awesome value, but we both said that it would be a worthwhile course at the more regular pricing.
This course has great features, some holes are challenging
The course has great scenery, I had really enjoyed playing there, would love to play there again
Good lay out potentially great course
Long enough for a big hitter but reachable if your not. Greens need help real bad. This is my first time playing it. But it seams this place was a great course not to long ago.
Good Course and value
Received a good value on Golfnow and based on recommendations tried the course. Overall a good course, reasonably challenging and pretty course. Only opportunity for improvement is the greens need to be made more consistent. Some are shaggy and others fast.
How do you know that you won the par 3 contest?
