Black Bear Golf Club
About
Black Bear Golf Club is part of the Crystal Springs Resort, which offers six other courses, though, it's hard to remember they're connected since they each offer a distinct character and look. Unlike Ballyowen and Crystal springs, two of the resort's most well known courses, Black Bear has more of a parkland layout. The course tumbles across rolling hills covered with trees, which come into play along the undulating fairways and greens. Water only comes into play on three holes but there are a whopping 65 bunkers coming into play. It's challenging but not frustrating. Both low and high handicappers will enjoy not only the golf course but also the beautiful scenery. Black Bear is one of the best values in the area and has garnered a strong local following.

Drainage and Greens
I've played this course a few times and I note that drainage is an issue. I note that many shots from the fairway are from wet muddy soil which affects the shots. The greens range from good to fair. There are spots of repair on many of the greens and some are cut shorter than others. Some allow for rather consistent ball roll but others do not as a result of their condition.
Overall it was a good experience as I like the slope and the challenge of keeping the ball in the fairways if you have any hope of a decent scoring opportunity.
Lots of fun , elevation changes and water holes , great place
Nice Staff , very helpful . Course was in great condition.
The grill after the round was just as good .
Highly recommended .
Thank you
This course has great features.
Black Bear Golf Course is very good to excellent.
Course conditions is very good.
Course was a lot of fun
My wife and I played this course a week after Hurricane Sandy hit our area and all things considered the course was in really good condition. Fairways were mowed and tee boxes were nice.
We both got serious about golf this year and are high handicappers and we found this course to have a great balance between challenge and forgiveness with some straight forward holes as well as some blind tee shots, doglegs and nicely placed bunkers.
Our only complaint was that some greens had a lot of un-repaired ball marks which did cause us some trouble on a few puts.
For the $16 green fee, it was an awesome value, but we both said that it would be a worthwhile course at the more regular pricing.
This course has great features, some holes are challenging
The course has great scenery, I had really enjoyed playing there, would love to play there again
Good lay out potentially great course
Long enough for a big hitter but reachable if your not. Greens need help real bad. This is my first time playing it. But it seams this place was a great course not to long ago.
Good Course and value
Received a good value on Golfnow and based on recommendations tried the course. Overall a good course, reasonably challenging and pretty course. Only opportunity for improvement is the greens need to be made more consistent. Some are shaggy and others fast.
THE GREENS WERE IN REALLY BAD SHAPE
they really need to attend to the greens, for the price you pay the greens really need to be kept up. they where really bad shape, but otherwise the course is great.
Well conditioned with an emphasis on accuracy
Nice course with very good conditions. Sand and moguls in spots, plus a few narrow fairways make the course a good challenge. Much more of a shorter shot makers course than a Wild Turkey which is longer but more open, but not as difficult as Crystal Springs. You can find some excellent deals on weekdays (which is when I play) making it a bargain.
good course but greens not prestine
Good for intermediates, pretty course with alot of wild life. Actually saw Wild Turkeys, Deer and a big Black Bear. Greens needed work, otherwise good course.
very poor greens
greens in horrible shape and they still charge full price...last time i'm playing there
NIce course, good facilities, poor greens
Good set up on the course, nice layout, good pro shop, bar and grill. Tee boxes and fairways in very good condition. Greens a big let down, very sandy and some greens were unplayable.
Nice course but very slow play
Overall I think this course is decent I might have second thoughts about playing it again at full price. Played this course twice this year and unfortunately on the second go around we found it to be very slow (5 hrs plus) and we barely finished before it got dark out. Appearance of the club house is nice and well kept, refreshment cart made a few stops during our round, a very nice feature. First time out greens were in good shape but not the same on the rebound, new sod on some greens and not rolled very well, made putting very difficult.
Excellent Course
I would recommend everyone to play this golf course. Course overall was in great shape some greens were on their way back from heavy summer play. Very enjoyable round of golf. Would play again.
