Ballyowen Golf Club is an homage to the great Scottish links courses, the place where golf originated. The course sprawls across 250 acres of rolling farmland that overlooks the Walkill River. The layout tumbles through valleys and hills, staying as true as possible to the natural contours of the land. Much like a traditional links golf course, the virtually treeless landscape is accented with craggy knolls. The challenging layout features lush green fairways that contrast beautifully with the pristine white sand bunkers and golden patches of rough that border the greensides. There are also water hazards that come into play on five holes. Ballyowen has earned the title of New Jersey's top public course and Golfweek has even ranked it as one of the top 50 courses in the country.

Really Nice, But…

The course is flat out beautiful and the facilities and staff are very nice but, if I’m going to nitpick (which, for the price, I think is a fair thing to do): LANTERNFLIES, so many lanternflies, their corpses littering several of the greens; most of the par 4s are similar in length so you often play the same clubs over and over; pace of play was a bit slow (about a 5 hour round) but the rangers did a good job asking the group in front to pick it up; some of the bunkers were more hard dirt than soft sand.

Overall a great course but a few adjustments would make it nearly perfect.

All just fine

The course is nice and the staff was great. Could rate of play and a nice layout. Just didn’t seem to be that great or beautiful to justify the almost $300 round cost.

Challenging and Beautiful

First trip back to Bally in several years and it was as beautiful as I remembered with several challenging holes and approach shots on both 9s. The pace of play for early Sunday morning was very annoying but I hope that was an anomaly. Definitely worth a 1-2x trip annually away from my home club.

SLOW ROUND needs rangers

For what it cost to play the number one public golf course in NJ, it should not have taken longer to play compared to any muni/county course in the state. 5 HOURS AND 15mins is the insane and uncalled for nowadays. It didn’t help that the group in front of us was also with the group in front of them. Seeing an 8some on the tee box was quite infuriating, enough so to throw you off your game. The only point something was said to them was at the 10th when the group behind us said something to the staff at the turn. Were we a twosome on a Sunday? Yes but we as well as the other twosome behind us were keeping a proper pacing as to not be on top of one another. So the solution instead of moving song the “mock outing” that was in front us they moved along the twosome behind us to join us. 5Hours and 15mins was absurd to play at a course charging premium rates. We need to get back to rangering courses to help regulate pace.

Great course

Very well set up course, and the staff was attentive. The only minor issue was the group ahead were high handicappers thus slowed things down. Course ranger pushed them along.
