Mastodon Golf Club
About
Situated midway between Hebron and Newark, Mastodon Golf Club (formerly known as Burning Tree Golf Course) is an 18-hole layout whose location has unique historical significance. In 1989 while digging a new pond for the course, a crewmember discovered fossils of the extinct American Mastodon. Although the original skeleton resides in Japan, the course is home to a full-sized replica as well as over 150 other replicas of both dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals. The museum-quality replicas make the golf course a fun place for families. In addition to the natural history lesson it offers, the course also provides a relaxing round that players of any skill level will enjoy. The regulation-length course has a classic layout that is both accessible and a fair challenge. The affordable rates make Burning Tree even more appealing.

Worn out and need serious updating
I played this course for a few years and it has just consistently been going down in quality. They do not put enough money into the course itself. The cart paths, the tee boxes, and the greens were fried and half dirt. Even the fairways were spotty at best. I know we're at the end of the summer, but I've played other courses nearby that were much greener and much more well kept for basically the same money. I will not be coming back anytime soon unless I hear that they have made substantial upgrades in the upkeep and course maintenance
Course in bad shape
Done if the greens were under repair. Couldn't tell the difference between fairway and rough.
Nice course, poorly maintained
I’m not sure what’s been going on with Mastodon lately. I enjoy the layout, get a mix of easier and more difficult holes. However, tee boxes were almost always a mess, fairways weren’t mowed down very much, bunkers are 1. Non existent and 2. Just dirt when they are existent. The ponds have no visible water because they are COVERED with algae. I’m not asking for perfection, but just a little care could go a long way. Price is too high for the conditions, especially if I could drive just a little farther and play a course that is maintained everyday for a deal.
I was held up ,as a single, for 5 holes by a 4some. They definitely knew I was there, as I made eye contact driving up to the tee box when they were leaving it ..Not the courses fault, But, perhaps a ranger would have made a difference..
Greens were in nice shape..
Some tee boxes needed a good mowing..
First Time at Mastodon
First time playing the course. Pleasantly surprised by the GPS in the carts. Very friendly and helpful staff!
A bit confusing navigating between a couple of the holes. Greens were in good shape. Fairways and tee boxes have patches of dead grass.
I would play again.
Good course
Played for the second time at this course and it was after a big rain. Course wasn't flooded too bad, just wet. Greens were slow but what do you expect. Just about every cup had 1 to 2 inches of water in it but carts were running and no puddles really seen anywhere. Could use work on the bunkers just to have more functioning, but everything else about the course is above par. Only real complaint is the layout is super weird and hard to find the right hole to play sometimes, but now that I've been there twice I think I got it.
Needs improvement
Greens need some work, lots of dead/sand filled spots. Tee boxes had some pretty tall grass, almost as long as the rough. Should put some additional signage up to help navigate.
Very nice for the price
I had a foursome ahead of me that wouldn’t let a two some or myself as a solo play through. I ended up skipping a hole so I could play with pace. Price was good, course conditions were fine since we have had a rough winter and rain season in Ohio this year. Definitely going back and am looking forward to how the course conditions will progress.
