Manakiki Golf Course
About
Named after a native American word for maple forest, Manakiki Golf Course's defining feature is the abundance of maple trees that line the winding fairways. The course is a classic Donald Ross design. He incorporated a variety of challenges including tricky doglegs, water hazards, up-and-down holes, and two canyon holes. The holes themselves also cover a range from short to long and tight to open. Golfers should prepare themselves for a bevy of uneven lies, but the dramatic elevation changes also guarantee some scenic views throughout the golf course. There are also sand traps but their placement and number were thoughtfully considered to make Manakiki G.C. challenging but still playable. It is popular for this reason but also because it is one of the best rounds in northeast Ohio you can find for under $50.

Gorgeous Course
Playing this course in the Fall is spectacular. This is a beautiful slice of land in Northeast Ohio . The former estate of Hanna family- now owned by the Cleveland Metroparks system. Challenging the greens were in great condition even though they had recently been punched and sanded few weeks ago.The fairways are in great condition The key boxes have shown their wear of the season- Only thing I noticed was nobody rakes the bunkers which is rude-And the carts should have some sand and seed so you can fix your divots. Nice staff. I’m not into hanging out drinking and eating so don’t care about that much. Love it.
Can't say enough about this course
I wish it were closer to Akron especially given traffic on hgwy 8/271 after work, because I'd play it all the time. Very well maintained tee boxes, fairways and greens. Great course layout, elevation change, nice approach shots over ravines/valleys, and such. Some tough holes on the back nine. Fast and true rolling greens, so stay below the hole to score well. Driver actually gets a decent workout on this course, compared to a lot of 4 and 5 irons on other area courses with only an occasional driver. Definitely in my top 5 public courses within a 60 mile radius of Akron. Clubhouse is large and has nice historic architecture.
total package
greens are in the top 5 on the east side public course list. awesome views from he tee box, and once in a while you should turn around and look back from the greens, equally beautiful view. course is a little slow to drain so playing during rainy periods can affect your experience. i agree with the comments about the invisible ranger situation, and during certain times it can be a real death march. trap maintenance could be stepped up a notch, but if your looking to play a public course on the east side, i would make this one me a must. easy access, wonderful views, challenging layout, great greens.
Course conditions
Greens were very nice and quick.
Course is in good shape. My only negative comment is the amount of sand in the bunkers is way too much. As soon as you step in you sink in 3-4 inches. That is way too much sand and it’s like trying to walk on the beach.
For an “upscale” course, I’m surprised no one on the staff monitors this.
Hottest day of the year!
I've been playing here for 27 years and I've never seen the course in better shape! Played 18 in just over 3 hours - just the way it should be.
Cleveland Metroparks does a very good job
Everything was very good. My only negative comment was I only saw the ranger once. The play could have have been better but that is public golf.
Always a nice place
Great golf course nice layout the geeens were fantastic and running true as can be staff was really nice at the snack bar and the clubhouse one of if not my favorite course
Course has fun/challenging holes and very decent conditions
Staff very friendly. Pace all day was slow due to a very slow 4 some. On back 9 a 2-some let me play through but 4-some would not!!! Where was the ranger? Finally had to skip a hole to get ahead of the jerk 4-some!!!
Excellent Experience at Manakiki!
I returned to Manakiki after about 10 years and wondered why it's been so long since I last played there! The layout is excellent - challenging, but it's a beautiful course. As always, the greens were in excellent condition - very smooth and very, very fast. We took the day off on a Monday to play, and it felt like we had the course to ourselves. I highly recommend this course for decent players - I would probably not recommend for beginners, unless your pace of play is no more than 4.5 hours. Some of the fairways are narrow, trees are large and established, and there is some water and quite a bit of sand.
This course is in great shape except for the hornets in most of the sandtraps
Always seems to be in good shape. Takes time to buy your ticket. It seems everyone is moving in slow motion. Need to play at the right time because play is usually slow.
Golf Heaven
I cannot put into words what an incredibly beautiful course this. I doubt there is anywhere in the world where you can play a Donald Ross gem for anything close to the very reasonable fees. The course conditions were PERFECT! The staff were all very helpful and happy. The greens were country club perfect and probably rolling 11-12 on the Stimp. Tees times run every 10 minutes not every 7-8 at many muni course. Even playing with a VERY slow friend we played in four hours. If you do not enjoy this incredible, fair test of golf, you must not know golf. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! N
Tough, tough greens, Yikes!
The course is well-maintained and the layout challenging. Very hilly. But the greens are the hardest I have played in NE Ohio. Very fast and very difficult to read.
You must play this course.
Stay Away and Don't Play!!!
Great course, great layout. However, stay away and don't play here. The staff make the experience so miserable that you want to pick up your ball and leave after 5 holes. The staff doesn't seem to understand that when we pay greens fees we are guests and we should be treated as guests. Instead the staff is dismissive, condescending and they are extremely rude to you when you are on the course. Several others players complained after the round was over, but I'm sure they will not write a review here. The people who work at the snack bar are very nice, but the on course staff are truly rotten. Stay away and don't play until the people at Manakiki learn to treat people as guests. Awful experience!
